Obituaries

HOWARD W. ANDRESEN, 76, of Leelanau County, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at his home.
      Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
      A complete obituary will appear in the Saturday edition of the Record-Eagle.
     
      RANDY JOHN VERTALKA, 51, of Brethren, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. Dec. 2, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, with Father Michael Conner officiating. Graveside services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at North Park Cemetery in Luther.
     
      **FLAG** Earl A. "Jake" Jacobs
      Died November 27, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Earl A. "Jake" Jacobs, 79, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at home.
      Born Jan. 31, 1922 in Lake Orion, he was the son of Peter A. and Pearl (Gage) Jacobs.
      Jake moved to Traverse City when he was 6 years old, and grew up on his parents' silver fox farm located just west of the airport. He was a graduate of Traverse City Central High School in 1941.
      Jake served his country honorably with the United States Navy during World War II on a destroyer escort in the Pacific Fleet. He was a member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans.
      Jake worked at Parsons for 19 years; Sheffer-Collett; and retired from Northwood Industries. His hobbies included woodworking with his buddy Ken Aldrich and riding his motorcycle up until just 5 years ago.
      Survivors include his daughters, Peggy (William) Tanner of Midland, and Deborah (Michael) Jewell of Interlochen; four grandchildren, Martha Tanner, Matthew Miller, Amy Kenny, and David Jewell; and four great-grandchildren, Anthony, Joshua, Stephen and Emily.
      Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia in 1978; his parents; and his sister, Evelyn.
      Visitation will be at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home today from 5 to 7 p.m.
      Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 conducting military honors. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the DAV, or to the American Heart Association.
      **FLAG** Frederick Twiest
      Died November 29, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Frederick Twiest, 83, of Traverse City, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Thursday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born March 27, 1918, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Frederick and Theresa (Opdendyk) Twiest Sr. On June 26, 1948, in Grandville, he married the former Dorothy J. Carlson, who survives.
      Fred was a graduate of Grandville High School. He served his country honorably with the United States Army. He later owned and operated Twiest Grocery Store in Grand Rapids together with his wife, Dorothy. After selling the store, he went to work for Meijers also in Grand Rapids, retiring in 1985. Fred was a member of Faith Reformed Church and the American Legion.
      Other survivors include his daughter, Diane (Mike) Wallman of Traverse City; brother, Albert (Wilma) Twiest of Grand Rapids; six grandchildren, Chris (Mitch) Shoobridge, Laura (Rusty) Darter, Sarah Twiest, Jeff Twiest, Bryan (Marissa) Wallman and Brooke (John) Konya; four great-grandchildren, Jenna and Grace Shoobridge, and Keegan and Luc Wallman; and nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Twiest on Oct. 13, 1999; and his sister, Florence Brenner.
      Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse this evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at Faith Reformed Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Noordmans officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Alzheimer's Association of Northwest Michigan, 531 1/2 S. Union, Traverse City, MI 49684, or to the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Ronald Edward Cataline
      Died November 27, 2001
      WILLIAMSBURG - Ronald Edward Cataline, 59, of Williamsburg, formerly of Fremont, Ohio, died Tuesday at home.
      Born June 28, 1942, in Millington, he was the son of Robert Donald and Aldine (Riness) Cataline.
      Mr. Cataline was self-employed as a sales consultant and also ministered to the congregation of the Powell United Methodist Church in Arlington, North Carolina.
      He enjoyed reading, fishing, old movies, taking pictures of birds and wildlife, and was especially devoted to his spirituality.
      Survivors include his children, Greg Cataline of Rapid City, Jackie (Fred) Salisbury of Empire; former wife, Susan Cataline; mother, Aldine Weber of Findlay, Ohio; sisters, Patti (Rick) Palmer of Clio, Brenda (Jim) Freeman of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Darwin (Judy) Cataline of Branson, Mo., Curtis Cataline of Knoxville, Tenn., J.D. (Susan) Cataline of Findlay, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Donald Cataline; and grandson, Dustin.
      A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday December 1, 2001, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, or to the Ronald Cataline memorial fund, in care of his family.
      Arrangement are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
