October 14, 2001ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity (Ruth Marie Buescher), 77, a nun of the Carmelite Monastery in Traverse City, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001.Sister was born on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16, 1924, in Fort Wayne, Ind. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne in 1965, and her doctorate degree from Fordham University in 1969. She taught developmental psychology at St. Francis College until 1976, and then was employed at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas in the public relations department. She entered the Carmelite Monastery on Sept. 1, 1990 and made her final vows on July 16, 1995. She is survived by her sister, Sister Bernice PHJC; and four brothers, Charles, Philip, Ray, and Leo. Five sisters, three of whom were religious in the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, preceded her in death. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Carmelite Monastery Chapel, where friends may call from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Rev. George Billman will officiate. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Carmelite Monastery Chapel. The Most Rev. Patrick R. Cooney, Bishop of Gaylord, will serve as the celebrant. Arrangements were made by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. - Marietta (Case) Nelson, 74, passed away on Oct. 5, 2001. Marietta was born and raised in Benzonia. She graduated from Smith College in 1949, and from the University of Michigan in 1967 with a degree in Library Science. She enjoyed a long career as a librarian at the National Institute of Science and Technology. Marietta and her husband, Sherman Nelson, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. She also volunteered for the Association for the Blind, served as historian for the NIST alumni association, and was active in fund raising for Smith College. Marietta is survived by her husband of 48 years, Sherman E. Nelson; two daughters, Karen Nelson Call and her husband, Dr. John D. Call Jr., and Kirsten Ann Nelson and her husband, Dr. Charles Gowan; grandsons, Daniel Call, and Charles Gowan; granddaughters, Kay Gowan, and Rebecca Call; brother, Leonard Case Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Brenda and Lorayne Case; and many beloved family members and friends. Marietta was preceded in death by her brother, William Case, in the spring of 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the First Congregational Church in Benzonia. Swanson, 94 of Owosso and Maple City, passed away on Oct. 12, 2001, at Leelanau Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care. Lurena was born the daughter of John and Christena (Willett) Eagleson on June 26, 1907, in Flint. She attended Owosso College and graduated as a licensed practical nurse from Goodrich General Hospital. She worked both in nursing, and for 25 years was the manager of Day Camera Shop in Owosso. She married Loren T. Swanson on Dec. 21, 1927, in Fenton. Loren preceded Lurena in death on Oct. 19, 1989. Both Lurena and Loren were lifetime members of the Wesleyan church. Lurena enjoyed many hobbies including knitting, crocheting (making a keepsake afghan for each family member) as well as becoming a very gifted painter, working with oils. Lurena is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Robert) Eveleth of Sun City, Ariz.; son, Leonard D. Swanson; grandsons, Steve Swanson, Jeff Swanson and Tim (Jane) Swanson; and two great-granddaughters, all of Maple City. Burial will take place at Cleveland Township Cemetery, Maple City. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. MUSKEGON - Mrs. Helen E. Carter, 93, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2001, at Roosevelt Park Nursing Home. She was born in Maple City on Dec. 7, 1907, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Borough) Perry. She married Harvey M. Lohr, who preceded her in death in 1961. Helen lived most of her life in the Traverse City area before moving to Muskegon in 1981. Helen worked as a psychiatric nurse for 32 years at the Traverse City State Hospital and retired in 1959. Helen married Philip W. Carter, who also preceded her in death in 1997. She was a life member of the Traverse City Order of the Eastern Star. In her younger days, Helen enjoyed fishing and traveling with her husband, Phil. Helen is survived by two step-daughters, Willene (Gene) Wilkens of Roosevelt Park, and Yvonne "Perky" (John) Lee of Muskegon; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; her half sister, Rose Cooke of Walker; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Oakwood Cemetery, 1325 E. Eighth Street, Traverse City. WILLIAMSBURG - Minard "Bud" Jerome Newhouse Jr., 62, of Williamsburg, passed away on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001. Bud was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 3, 1939, the son of Minard Jerome and Stella (Laskey) Newhouse Sr. He was a lifelong resident of this area. On June 17, 1958, he married the former Linda Lee Nemec in Elk Rapids. Bud served his country in the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the U.S. Constellation. Bud was a master electrician and was employed by Alpine Electric. His job afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout the states of Michigan and Alaska, and as far away as Lagos, Nigeria. He was an avid coin collector and loved working in his rose garden. Bud was a member of the Masonic Temple in Elk Rapids. He also was very active with Boy Scout Troop #46 of Elk Rapids for many years. The family will miss him bunches! Bud is survived by his wife, Linda, of Williamsburg; three children, Jodie Newhouse of Traverse City, Bud Jerome (Irene) Newhouse III of Williamsburg and Tylar (Jerry) McKay of Lake Ann; his sister, Judy (Larry) Dewitt of Montague; his favorite aunt, Irene Kaminski; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Service of Loving Memory will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Mellor officiating. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to Family Intentions. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. - A. Loretta Galloway of Green Valley, Ariz., and formerly of Traverse City, passed away on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. Loretta was a winter resident of Green Valley, Ariz., from 1977 until she made it her permanent home in 1991. Loretta and her husband, Russ Church, and their two sons, Don and Dick, settled in Traverse City in 1956. She was a secretary for Glen Loomis, who was the superintendent of schools at the time. Loretta also worked for the March of Dimes as a field representative for several Michigan counties. She was a member of the Traverse City Central United Methodist Church and sang in their choir for several years. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and she was a Life Master. While still a resident of Traverse City, Loretta lost her husband, Russ Church, her mother and her son, Dick. She was later to also lose her other spouses, Leon Kaiser and John Galloway, and her oldest son, Don Church. Loretta is survived by two grandsons, Rusty and Mickey Church; three great-granddaughters; a sister from London, Tenn.; a sister-in-law from Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside memorial service at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Memorial Gardens, 3575 Veteran's Drive, Traverse City, in the Garden of the Last Supper section. The Rev. David Crawford will be officiating. All friends are invited to attend. There will be a luncheon afterward at Scott's Harbor Grill, 12917 West Bay Shore, for everyone. TRAVERSE CITY - Wanda V. Rogoski, 80, passed into the loving hands of our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Birchwood Nursing Home. She was born in Muskegon on April 2, 1921, the daughter of Alexis J. and Loretta (Charland) Rogoski. Wanda graduated in 1942 from Marygrove College in suburban Detroit. Wanda made her home in Traverse City for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and was a devout Catholic who cherished the rosary and prayed it daily. Wanda's family extends their thanks to the management and staff of Birchwood Nursing Home, Nordhoff Adult Foster Care and the doctors and nurses at Munson Medical Center. We also thank all of those at the local Social Security Office, the former Traverse City State Hospital, Traverse City Catholic Social Services, and everyone in the community who ministered to her, helped her, and eased her suffering. Wanda's survivors include, one sister, Yvonne Botbyl, and a special nephew, Randy Rogoski, both of Muskegon; and nine other nephews and three nieces. A Mass of Remembrance will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Fr. Bill Lipscomb as celebrant. VIOLA HOUGHTON, of Manistee, and formerly of Strongs, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Tendercare of Manistee. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at the Community Bible Church in Strongs. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the time of service at the church. CALEB EDWARD MARGETSON, 84, of Thompsonville, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at his residence. MCDONALD, 79, of Jordan Township, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan. BARBARA G. MUNCEY, 80, of Elk Rapids, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2001. MANCELONA - Alyce Yarda (Sandeen) Keaton, 82, of Mancelona, and Big Pine Key, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City. Alyce was born in Anaconda, Mont., on Nov. 16, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Rilla (Martindale) Sandeen. On March 6, 1940, in Bellaire, she married William Denver Keaton. Alyce had worked as a self-employed beautician and cosmetologist for many years. In Mancelona, she was a member of the Torch Lake Grange # 1840, and the Mancelona Senior Center. She attended Mancelona United Methodist Church. In Big Pine Key, Fla., she was a member of the Moose Lodge, Lion's Club, and the Big Pine Key Senior Center. Alyce was involved in volunteer work in both communities. Alyce is survived by her son, Dale (Joyce) Keaton of Detroit; her daughter-in-law, Isabelle Keaton of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Michael (Kimberly) Keaton, Maggie (Jim) Holcomb, and Lori Keaton all of Atlanta; three great-grandchildren, Gary Keaton, Dagny Holcomb, and Jack Holcomb; her sister, Hazel Butler of South Boardman; two brothers, Dale Sandeen of Rochester Hills, and Donald Potrafke of Augusta, Ga.; four sisters-in-law, Lucy Sandeen of Mancelona, Doris Zemetsky of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Jewel Sandeen of Southfield, and Helen Sandeen of Alden; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William D. Keaton on March 23, 1996, a son, Gary William Keaton on Oct. 29, 1971; four brothers, Bob Sandeen, Harold Sandeen, John Sandeen and Richard Potrafke; and her sister, Helen Young. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Mancelona United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kathy Steen officiating. Interment will be at noon, Monday, Oct. 22, in Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to Mancelona United Methodist Church, or to the Mancelona Senior Center. |
