LEON F. LALONE, 83, of Flint and Traverse City, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Bellaire.
      Family services were held and burial was in Circle Hill Cemetery at Williamsburg.
      Arrangements by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      EDITH V. SHUMSKY, 94, of Traverse City, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Arrangements are pending through the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      JEROME ALLEN WITEK, 42, of Manistee, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until time of the services.
     
      DAVID A. WITTE, 28, of Interlochen, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Kalkaska County as the result of an automobile accident.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at the Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth M. "Betty" Novak ended her journey on this earth on Oct. 17, 2001.
      She entered into this life on July 11, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Kabat) Osga. She lived most of her life in Traverse City, living for a brief period in Grand Rapids. She met her partner for life, Laurence Novak, and they were married on Oct. 20, 1934.
      Betty was employed as a caterer for many years with the Park Place Hotel. In 1972, she went to work for Sears, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for her entire life, and was also a member of the church's funeral luncheon committee and the Variety Club. Betty was active in the Elmwood Township Senior Citizens Luncheon Program. Her family was her greatest treasure, especially her grandchildren.
      Betty is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Sly and Beverly (Terry) Banks; one son, Larry (Arlene) Novak, all of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Suzanne Sly and Nicole (David) Hurst; and three great-grandchildren, Corey Barker (her special man), and Emalee and Sarah Hurst.
      Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1972; and a brother, Clarence Osga, in 1982.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. James Gardiner as celebrant. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions.
     
      COPEMISH - Robert Bruce Northrup, 79, of Copemish, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at his residence.
      Bob was born in Midland on March 11, 1922, the son of Welcome A. and Mary M. (McCall) Northrup. He married Mary E. Secrist on August 23, 2000, in Benzonia.
      Bob was a roofer by occupation. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed ice fishing, canning, gardening and writing poems.
      Bob served his country proudly during World War II in the U.S. Army.
      Bob is survived by his wife, Mary of Copemish; sons, Michael (Virginia) Northrup of Missouri, Thomas (Brenda) Northrup of California, Dennis Northrup of Copemish, Mark Northrup of Benzonia, Norbert (Julie) Northrup of Florida, Kelly Northrup of Benzonia, and David (Sandy) Northrup of Thompsonville; daughters, Wanda Cudney of Thompsonville, Renna Sanders of Florida, and Ellana (Brett) Alther of Interlochen; step sons, Ken Batchelor of Honor, and Richard Batchelor of Mesick; brothers, George (Dolly) Northrup of Saginaw, Jim (Nancy) Northrup of Saginaw, Harvey (Beverly) Northrup of St. Charles, and John Northrup of Florida; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Cecelia in 1986; his twin brother, Russell; and a sister, Hazel.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Thompsonville Fire Hall, with Pastor Bruce Killingbeck officiating. Burial will be at the Cleon Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the time of the services.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Robert B. Northrup Memorial Fund.
      Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, Beulah.
     
      ONAWAY - Coach Dick Dunn (John Richard Dunn Jr.), 57, a lifetime resident of Onaway, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.
      Dick was born in Cheboygan on May 18, 1944, the son of John and Louisa (King) Dunn. On Feb. 22, 1963, he married the former Jill Porter at the First Baptist Church in Onaway.
      Dick was employed with United Auto Workers in maintenance until his retirement in 1999. At that time, he took a job with Northern Die Cast in Harbor Springs, where he was a liaison between management and employees. Dick supported Onaway athletics through coaching wrestling, football, baseball, and yes at one time, basketball. He was a member of the Onaway Sports Boosters, Forest Waverly Fire Board, and was the bargaining chairman for the union at the UAW Education Center. Dick also enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting boughs and golf.
      Dick is survived by his wife, Jill Dunn of Onaway; daughter, Jonna Dunn of Oklahoma City; sons, Phil Dunn of Onaway, Rick (Heidi) Dunn of Traverse City, David (Amy) Dunn of Alpena and Matt Dunn of Muskegon; sister, Joan (Robert) Carter of Onaway; brother, Clayton (Gale) Dunn of Onaway; grandchildren, Trevor and Kortney Dunn, Patrick and Mollie Dunn, and Jacob Belonga; brothers-in-law, Steve (Lynn) Porter and Tim (Annette) Porter both of Onaway; and sisters-in-law, Jan (Fred) Cassens of Florida, Kay (Bill) Dymond of St. Charles, Ill., and Tammy Olson of Alpena.
      Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
      Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Chagnon Funeral Home, Onaway.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Onaway High School Gymnasium, with Pastor Jay Chambers officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tower.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Onaway Area Schools Athletics Department.
     
      TORCH LAKE - Doris May Bates, 80, of Torch Lake, Central Lake Township, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      She was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend. Born March 4, 1921 in Watertown, N.Y. , Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Olive (Benson) O'Hearn, and her younger brother, Frank William Jr. (Sonny), who died in World War II.
      Doris' life experiences exemplified her generation. A child of the Depression, she worked in defense industries during World War II and met her husband, William, while he was stationed at the Naval Hospital at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. After the war, William and Doris chose a naval career. They retired to Torch Lake in 1969.
      Doris was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
      Surviving are her husband of 58 years, William Bates; her daughter, Patricia Roush and son-in-law, Paul Roush of Charlotte, Mich.; her grandson, Wade Roush, and his partner Kevin Park of San Francisco, and her grandson, Jamie Roush and his wife, Jen Athey of Fairbanks, Alaska.
      A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township.
