October 20, 2001ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Granella Smith, 90, died October 14, at 7:30 p.m. at her home.She was born April 13, 1911 in Saginaw, the daughter of Glenn W. and Della D. (Nickels) Smith. She precedes her two sisters, Ruth Eastwood of Montrose and Alice Seelye of Traverse City and many beloved family and friends. Granella taught school and was in administration for 40 years in Lansing. She retired in 1968 and took residence in Florida. She spent summers in Oscoda and also did some traveling. The last nine years she spent with her sister Alice in Michigan and Florida. A graveside service will be held today, 2 p.m. at Montrose Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St., Traverse City, MI 49684. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. TORCH LAKE - Doris May O'Hearn Bates, 80, of Torch Lake, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2001. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Born March 4, 1921, in Watertown, N.Y., Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Olive (Benson) O'Hearn, and her younger brother, Frank William Jr. (Sonny), who died in World War II. Doris' life experiences exemplified her generation. A child of the Depression, she worked in defense industries during World War II and met her husband, William, while he was stationed at the Naval Hospital at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. After the war, William and Doris chose a naval career. They retired to Torch Lake in 1969. Doris was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, William Bates; her daughter, Patricia Roush, and son-in-law, Paul Roush, of Charlotte, Mich.; her grandson, Wade Roush, and his partner, Kevin Park of San Francisco; and her grandson, Jamie Roush, and his wife Jen Athey of Fairbanks, Alaska. A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Township Library, P.O. Box 397, Central Lake, MI 49622, or to the Leukemia Society of America, Michigan Chapter, 21617 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores, MI 48080-2254. Arrangements are being made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Edith V. Shumsky, 94, after several years of declining health, came to rest on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born in Sharon, the third child of David S. and Caroline (Shanks) Hosier, she attended school in Kalkaska, where she was a star on the high school girls basketball team. After further education in County Normal and at Western Michigan College, where she earned her way as a waitress, she taught first in the country school at Leetsville and then at the Grayling Elementary School. After her marriage to Stanley C. Shumsky in 1929, she was a full-time wife and mother, living in Kalkaska and, after 1938, in Traverse City, until the death of her husband in 1959. Then she earned her agent's license, working to retain the family insurance agency until her younger sons were old enough to take it over. Edith continued working at the agency as bookkeeper until she was 88. With her husband and her siblings all gone before her, she was the last of her generation on her side of the family. Edith is survived by her five children, Allison, Stanley D. (LoAnn), and John J. (Dianna), all of Traverse City, Nancy A. (Millard) Peck of Karlin, and Judith M. (Gregorio) Belloso of Salisbury, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Always a loving and courageous mother, she never complained, even when increasing disability deprived her of her treasured independence. It is by her own wish that there will be no formal funeral. Private family graveside services will be held at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Anyone wishing to honor her memory may do so with a donation to any good cause of their choice. NEWAYGO - Mrs. Betty Jean Battenfield, 72, of Croton Township, Newaygo, passed away on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Home of Hope in Grand Rapids. She was born in Fife Lake on Jan. 27, 1929, the daughter of Wilbur Christopher and Letha (Demon) Downey. On July 17, 1948, in Fife Lake, she married John "Red" Battenfield, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1988. She worked as a cook for Cozy Inn in Hardy Dam until her retirement. Mrs. Battenfield is survived by her daughters, Terri (Buck) VanderStolp of White Cloud, and Peggy (Dennis) DeRidder of Wyoming; her son, Douglas (Emilie) Battenfield of Kentwood; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna (Ray) Wilson of Fife Lake; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Newaygo. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, at the Clark Cemetery, Fife Lake. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Fremont Area Foundation for Hospice of Michigan, Newaygo County, or to the Lakeshore Lung Society, Newaygo County. Arrangement are being handled by McKinley Funeral Home, Newaygo, (231) 652-5613. SOPHIE P. KRUSNIAK, 81, of Manistee, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. An evening prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. on Sunday also. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Interment will follow the Mass at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, also in Manistee. VICTOR MONTOYA, 86, of Traverse City, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Santeiu Chapel of John N. Santeiu & Son Funeral Home, 1139 Inkster Rd., Garden City (between Ford Rd. and Cherry Hill). Dr. Dean A. Clump will officiate. Burial will be at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi. RAYMOND L. SINE, 66, of Merritt, passed away at the Mercy Hospital in Grayling on Oct. 19, 2001. Visitation for Mr. Sine will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Young Funeral Home in Lake City. INTERLOCHEN - Our beloved David passed from this life to be with God on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001. He was born on Dec. 10, 1972 in Bethesda, Maryland, the son of Thomas and Barbara Witte. As a boy, David was quiet, introspective, generous and giving with a great sense of humor. In high school, he enjoyed playing tennis, doing art projects and being with friends. He graduated from Mattawan High School, and went on to Western Michigan, where he earned a degree in business. His first job after college was with the Sherwin Williams Company in Traverse City. Recently, he became employed as a Pharmaceutical Rep. with Merck and Co. It was in Traverse City that he met his darling, Emily. They were married on June 13, 1998. Their little girl, Hannah Grace, was born on May 20, 1999 and David adored her. For several years, David was involved in the Big Brother Program, and leaves behind his little brother, Evan. David's life was one of hard work and joy. He loved his family and friends and was always willing to help out when needed. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and working with wood. David's life ended as a result of an automobile accident. He leaves behind his daughter, Hannah, his wife, Emily; her parents, Mary and Jerry Dillinger; all of Traverse City; his parents, Tom and Barbara Witte of Mattawan; his sister, Suzanne Moyle and her husband, Mike of Mattawan; nieces, Ashley and Olivia; nephew, Brett Moyle; his grandmothers, Annabelle Stearns and Marie Witte, all of Mattawan; three aunts; one uncle; three cousins; and many good friends. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 22, at 1 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City. Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser officiating.
