October 22, 2001ObituariesEASTPORT - Robert J. Widerstedt, 53, of Eastport, died on Saturday at his home.He was born Nov. 19, 1947, in Detroit, the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Breiter) Widerstedt. He graduated from Cass Tech. High School in 1965 and the University of Michigan School of Education in 1970. After graduating, he served in the Peace Corps. drilling wells in India. On March 17, 1982, he married Cheryl Cartner in Bellaire. They made their home in Eastport, where he began working in construction. He was a self-employed builder for many years. Surviving are his wife, Cheryl; daughters, Irene Widerstedt of Mt. Pleasant and Molly Widerstedt at home; his parents, Alfred and Dorothy Widerstedt of Dearborn; siblings, Richard (Terri) Widerstedt of Birmingham, Kathy (Greg) Sherman of Troy and Ken (Michelle) Widerstedt of Bloomfield Township; niece, Jenna; nephews, Kyle, Kevin and Eric; Uncle Herman and Aunt Lorraine Breiter of Vero Beach, Fla. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Collins, residence, 3644 Blasen Shores Dr., just south of White Sands Estates. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Alano Club of Charlevoix. Arrangements were made by Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth. THOMPSONVILLE - John Napora, 76, of Thompsonville, died on Wednesday at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. Mr. Napora was born on June 7, 1925, in Detroit, the son of Wasyl and Mary (Bachor) Napora. Mr. Napora spent the majority of his life in the Thompsonville area, where he was the manager for Modern Lumber Company in Thompsonville. He also farmed and was well known for his strawberries. He held a Master Electrician, Builder's and Plumber's license. He built many homes in the area and assisted with the construction of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Copemish. He was also the former Treasurer of Springdale Township. He enjoyed farming and growing crops, his time at the lumber yard and was very active in his church life at St. Raphael's. He is survived by a niece, Sharon; nephews, Ron, Bill and Dennis; several great nieces and nephews; and by one great-great-niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Kivinen and Estelle Banasiak; and a niece, Diane. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. from St. Raphael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Kosterman celebrant. Interment will follow at Thompsonville Cemetery. The family has suggested memorials to St. Raphael's Catholic Church. The Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes served the family. TRAVERSE CITY - Claude E. Collins, 90, of Traverse City for the past 40 years, died on Saturday. He was born on Jan. 6, 1911, in Long Lake Township, the son of Ara and Clara (Clark) Collins. On Oct. 17, 1939, in Detroit, Claude married the former Mary H. Zeigler. Claude was self-employed as a coin machine operator for many years in the Traverse City area, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the V.F.W. Cherryland Post #2780 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. Claude is survived by his wife, Mary of Traverse City; two sisters, Helen (Jim) Wilson of California and Betty (Carl) Goss of Elk Rapids; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, LaVaun Moore, Dorothy "Lois" Hewitt, Zilpha Fennig and Mary Walker-Reyton; and two brothers, Thomas and Arthur Collins. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Keith Huffman officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. LORETTA E. SWIKOSKI, 86, of Mancelona, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. A rosary service will be held on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. |
