TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth Marie McGillis, 89, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at Bortz Health Care on Wednesday after a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born May 2, 1912, in Cedar, she was the daughter of Peter and Mary (Novak) Schettek. Her mother died when she was a young girl and she was lovingly raised by her stepmother, Martha (Flees) Schettek. On Nov. 12, 1930, at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore, she married Theron "Mac" Kenneth McGillis who preceded her in death on May 24, 1993. Elizabeth attended Holy Rosary School in Isadore until high school and later graduated from Traverse City High School. She was a wonderful homemaker and a great cook and will be remembered fondly for her special dishes. She enjoyed her flowers, doing needlework, playing euchre and especially bingo games. Elizabeth was a great sports fan and watched many games including the Detroit Tigers. During World War II, she was employed by Parts Manufacturing Company. She was a devout Catholic all her life and was a faithful member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Mrs. McGillis was blessed with two daughters who survive her, Phyllis (Larry) Babel and Marilyn Liles all of Traverse City; and a brother, Peter (Sharon) Schettek Jr., of Beaverton, Ore.; many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews. God also blessed her with seven grandchildren, Beverly (Bob) Kuhlman, Janice (David) Clinton, Karen (Bob) Lane, Mary (Jon) Constant, Bonny (Scott) Wares, Diane (Wayne) Speas and Patti O'Rourke; fourteen great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Grandma B," Katie, Laura and Sarah Kuhlman; Chris, Matt and Jeffrey Clinton; Jonathan, Jennifer, Michelle and Kara Lane; Jody and Kacie Constant; Jenna Wares and Patrick O'Rourke. She was also able to hold and enjoy her first great-great- grandchild, Caleb James Lane. Along with her husband, Theron of 63 devoted years, she was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Martha Schettek Sr.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rufus and Loretta Brow; George and Agnes Kelderhouse; Bernard and Virginia Schopieray; Theron's parents, William and Mayme McGillis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cletus and Evelyn McGillis, and Fred and Helen Graham. Elizabeth will be missed greatly by her family here on earth, but we celebrate the joy of her new life with Christ. Visitation will be at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Francis Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Father James Gardiner will be serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church, or to the Father Fred Foundation. The family wishes to extend their great appreciation to the wonderful nurses and aides at Bortz Health Care for the loving care and comfort they extended to Elizabeth. They also send thanks to Munson Hospice for their marvelous comfort measures during her final days. |
