October 28, 2001Obituaries.TRAVERSE CITY - Frank A. Noteware, 95, of Traverse City died Friday at Bortz Health Care. Born Sept. 17, 1906 in Delaware, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, Frank was the son of George H. and Mary E. (Davis) Noteware. George was the teacher for the miners' children. Frank went to Oak Park Elementary School and graduated from Traverse City High School. He also attended the community college in Traverse City, receiving his teaching permit at the age of 19. He taught at the Yuba school. During the depression he had many jobs, working at a gas station, special delivery person, and was a clerk at Badgero's Variety store. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, receiving the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. On June 15, 1946, he married the former June R. Garland, the daughter of Arthur and Mildred Garland, at Grace Episcopal Church. He worked at Maxbauers Creamery and then worked at Ideal Dairy Co. where he retired after 19 years. A member of Grace Episcopal Church, Frank sang in the choir for 50 years, he was a church vestryman, on the search committees, a member of the men's club and volunteered for the church's annual dinners and other functions. He had been actively involved in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and was a Boy Scout Commissioner. Frank received the Scout's God and Country award and Scouting's highest award, the Silver Beaver award. He worked with the District Court as the first volunteer to work with youth. Frank also loved the outdoors and camping with his family. Surviving are his wife, June, of 55 years; his two sons, John (Christine) Noteware of Davison and George H. Noteware III of Traverse City; daughter, Mary E. Noteware of Holland; brother, Nathan E. Noteware of Arizona; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert and George; and sisters, Jane Bohaboy, Marion Thorpe, and Virginia Earl; and a niece Karen Noteware. Memorial services will be at Grace Episcopal Church on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with visitation on Monday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the church. The Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser will officiate. Burial will be in the Church Prayer Garden. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grace Episcopal Church or the Boy Scouts of America. Arrangements were by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. CEDAR - Irene Constance (Rosinski) Phillips, age 86, passed away in Florida on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. Irene was the fourth child of Michael S. and Helen (Odoi) Rosinski of Cedar. In 1937, she married Joseph G. Phillips. Irene resided with her husband and two children in Berkley for 30 years, where she attended Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church. Irene was employed by Bell Telephone Co. in Royal Oak for 22 years before retiring to Clearwater, Fla. in 1976, where she was a member of St. Cecilia's. Irene is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Osburn of Adrian, and Marylyn Bechard of Hudson, Fla.; two sisters, Proxy Bryant of Cedar, and Sophia Sharp of Sun City West, Ariz.; step daughter, Yvonne Collingwood of Southfield; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Irene will be dearly missed. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, in 1972; her brother, Klemens Rosinski in 1959; and step children, Evelyn Ling and Richard Phillips. Plans for a memorial service at Holy Rosary Church in Cedar are pending. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. GILLS PIER - Celia Christine Kalchik, 93, of Gills Pier, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Bortz Health Care. Celia was born in Gills Pier on May 6, 1908, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Hulla) Houdek. On April 17, 1928, she married Roy Albion Kalchik in Gills Pier. Celia was the oldest surviving lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She loved her vegetable garden and canned her home-grown produce for years. Celia also enjoyed quilting and needlework. She is survived by seven children, James (Virginia) Kalchik, Gertrude Vingsness, Betty (Otto) Mork, Elmer (Millie) Kalchik, Bernice (Albert) Herman, Pat (Clarence) Popp and Tom (Jane) Kalchik; her brother, Victor (Agnes) Houdek; 33 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Celia was preceded in death by her husband, Roy A. Kalchik, on Sept. 22, 1990; her son-in-law, Donald Vingsness; her brother, Charles; her sister, Emma Sedlacek; and her twin sister, Anna Korson. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with the Rev. Reynoldo Garcia officiating. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mass Intentions or to the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery Fund. |
