TRAVERSE CITY - Fred McDonald, 62, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Jan. 31, 1939 in Farmington, he was the son of George E. and Lila R. (Groate) McDonald.
      Fred is survived by his first wife, Pauline; daughters, Christine, Sherri and Deborah (Jeff) James; son, Fred II; grandchildren, Shane, Michael, Jeffrey and Araya; brothers, Ross, Babe, Carl (Linnie), Bill, Bob (Linda) and Jack; sisters, Barb (Peter) Volrath, Edie (Tom) Husted, Marie (Tim) Kohl and Kathleen Winkler.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Fred will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and his generous heart.
      A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. Pastor Bill Smith will officiate.

      ELBERTA - Nina McConnell, 81, of Elberta, passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 30, 2001, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Nina was born in Weaubleau, Mo., on Nov. 1, 1919, the daughter of William L. and Molly Fay (Brookshire) Swicegood. She moved to the Elberta area in 1945 and then moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1989, returning to Elberta in May of this year. She married Pat McConnell on Sept. 7, 1945 and they divorced in 1989.
      Nina was a registered nurse and was employed at Anna Markham Hospital and Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, both in Frankfort. She later became a private duty nurse. Nina served her country honorably with the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
      Nina was an ardent Duke Blue Devil's fan and she enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, shopping and spending quality time with her four great-grandsons. Nina was a member of the Elberta United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post in Frankfort.
      Nina is survived by her daughters, Patrina Nickson of Elberta, and Kathryn (Charles) denHeeten of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Richard Nickson Jr., Patrick McConnell and Maria (Jason) Brookshire Raglin; four great-grandsons, Zachary Sims, Lance Raglin, Steven Raglin and Orin Patrick McConnell; one brother, William Swicegood of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister, Patricia Parish of Kokomo, Ind.
      Nina was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Nancy Sharp and Delores Vaughn; one brother, Robert Swicegood; and a cousin, Kathryn Teague.
      Friends may meet with family from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday from the Elberta United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Gilmore Township Cemetery.
      Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider The Maples.
      ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Josephine L. Jones, 79, of Orange Beach, Ala., formerly of Traverse City, passed away on Thursday at her home in Orange Beach, Ala.
      She was a teacher for many years with the Traverse City Public School System.
      She is survived by her husband of 56 years, George E. Jones Jr.; sons, George (Gej) E. (Sally) Jones III of East Lansing; Charles L. (Anne) Jones of Owosso; daughter, Dorothy Jones (Brian Watson) of Seattle; three grandchildren, Brandy, Jamie and Charles G. Jones.

      MAPLE CITY - Alice M. Flees passed away early Tuesday morning at Maple Valley Nursing Home at the age of 89 years.
      Alice was born on Jan. 28, 1912, in East Jordan, the daughter of Joseph and Annabelle (Svoboda) Nachazel. She married Martin E. Flees on Oct. 13, 1945, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Maple City.
      Alice is survived by her husband of 56 years, Martin; a daughter and a son, Arlene Ogden of Saginaw and Gary Flees of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Angela (Jeff) Gross of Traverse City, Tanya and Tara Flees of Maple City; two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Abigail Gross of Traverse City; a sister, Winifred Jankowski of Traverse City; sisters-in-law, Agnes Fleese of Detroit and Orpha (Nachazel) Deering of Empire; nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
      Alice was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Nachazel, and her grandson, Michael Allen Richardson. She was devoted to her family, as well as her church and her religion.
      She was a member of St. Rita's Church and St. Rita's Rosary and Altar Society. For many years, Alice was the church organist at St. Rita's. Alice was employed by the Maple City post office as a postal clerk for 19 years, until she retired.
      Alice will be remembered for her love for her family, her wonderful sense of humor and her enjoyment in helping others.
      The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at St. Rita-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maple City with the Rev. Father Chad Zielinski serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Rita's Cemetery in Maple City. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m.
      Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider St. Rita's Church or Maple Valley Nursing Home.
      EVA AMELIA HORNER, 92, of Grayling, passed away on Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Grayling Nursing Center.
      Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Grayling. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
      ILA SELMA MOSELER, 81, of Dearborn Heights, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Oakwood Hospital. She was born in Arcadia on Nov. 4, 1919.

      BEULAH - Mary Louise Smith, 78, of Beulah, passed away on Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at her residence.
      Mary was born in Ansonia, Ohio on Aug. 13, 1923, the daughter of Alfred D. and Dorlie F. (Creamer) Stewart. She married Edward J. Smith Jr., in Northville on Jan. 27, 1945.
      Mary was a homemaker and member of Internationally Yours. She was a former member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Mary was a member of the Beulah Church of Christ.
      Mary is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward; her sister, Marthabel (Herbert) Nelson of Leland; her niece, Nancy Lee (David) Marble of Howell; nephews, Stuart A. Nelson of Washington and Travis Nelson of Traverse City; great-nieces, Dori, Megan and Robin Marble, all of Howell; and great-nephews, Chris and D'Andre Marble, both of Howell, and Erik Nelson of Salem Conn.
      Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Beulah Church of Christ with James Sanderson officiating. Interment will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery.
      The family will greet friends at the time of the services at the church.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Beulah Church of Christ.

      Velma Stradinger Ferstle
      Died October 29, 2001
      MANCELONA - Velma Stradinger Ferstle, 90, of Mancelona, and formerly of Bellaire, passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Fuller Adult Foster Care Home in East Jordan.
      Velma was born in Elkton on July 17, 1911, the daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Grody) Wiederhold. On June 8, 1932, in Mancelona, she married Leonard Pete Stradinger. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1980. On April 6, 1985, in Bellaire, she married Harvey Ferstle. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1995.
      Velma had worked part time in the summers at the Ellsworth Canning Factory, the Heinz Pickle Factory in Mancelona, and the Elk Rapid Canning Factory. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church - L.C.M.S. in Mancelona. She enjoyed sewing, baking, watching television game shows, listening to country music and going to the Mancelona Senior Center.
      Velma is survived by four children, Dorothy (Reno) Lane of East Jordan, Betty (August) Scholl of Mancelona, Joan Mattson of Grand Rapids, and Thomas (Diane) Stradinger of Kentwood; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Fred (Ruth Ann) Wiederhold of Springfield, Va., and Ford (Frieda) Wiederhold of Grand Rapids; one sister, Bessie Trevan of Grand Rapids; her sister-in-law, Meatha Wiederhold of Grand Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Velma was also preceded in death by one son, Richard Stradinger on April 12, 1938; four brothers, Cecil, Edgar, Morley, and Virgil Wiederhold; and four sisters, Lenora Scholl, Pearl Niederhofer, Alice Binnie, and Ruth St. John.
      The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc., with the Rev. Daniel McVey of St. Matthew Lutheran Church - L.C.M.S. officiating. Interment will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Mancelona.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
