Obituaries

JOSEPH KERTES, 90, of Harrietta, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. Mr. Kertes was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Springfield, Ill.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sixteen Cemetery in Harrietta.
     
      CLOYA E. LOWE, 84, of Grayling, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at the AuSable Valley Nursing Home. She was born June 5, 1917, in Grayling.
      Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Grayling Free Methodist Church. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Fairview.
     
      HONOR - Willard Earl "Bill" Martin, 81, of Honor, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at the Homesteader in Benzonia.
      He was born on Dec. 19, 1919, in Honor, the son of Samuel A. and Winnefred (Brown) Martin. On Sept. 29, 1939, in Honor, he married Ann Jarvis, who preceded him in death in February 1997.
      Mr. Martin was a heavy equipment operator for 37 years for the Benzie County Road Commission. He was a sports fan for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing golf and farming. He was a past member and president of the Honor Lions Club, and also the local chapter of the AFL-CIO. Mr. Martin was also active in community athletic groups.
      Surviving are his son, Willard (Kristine) Martin of Marquette; a daughter, Sharon (William) Marshall of Santa Rosa, Calif.; six grandchildren, Holly (John) Woods of Haupstuhl, Germany, Gretchen Martin of Greensboro, N.C., Amanda Martin of Iron Mountain, Lisa (Ronald) Sippel of New York, Kimberly Ann (Doug) Fitts and Derek Marshall, all of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Madelyn and Luke Woods of Haupstuhl, Germany and Dillion Fitts of Santa Rosa, Calif.; brother-in-law, Lowell Berryhill of Beulah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Mr. Martin was also preceded in death by his brothers, Versel and Fred Martin; and his sisters, Hazel Berryhill and Mardella Iverson.
      Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Champion Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Maher officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Honor Congregational Church. Friends and relatives are welcome.

      Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Gertrude L. Cornell, 78, of Traverse City, died Friday morning at Munson Medical Center.
      A lifelong resident of the Glen Arbor area, she was a 1940 graduate of Glen Arbor High School who enjoyed sewing and making beautiful afghans. Gertrude was formerly an assistant cook at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor.
      Born Sept. 19, 1922, in Glen Arbor, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Pearl (Davis) Warnes. On Jan. 21, 1946, in Glen Haven, she married Stanley N. Cornell, who preceded her in death in July of 1993.
      Survivors include: son, Gilbert H. Cornell of Traverse City; daughter, Vanice K. Yorks; brother, Gilbert (Elsie) Warnes of Glen Arbor; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
      Gertrude was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia Craven.
      Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Cornell's niece, Sonja Craven, will officiate. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
