Obituaries

LUDINGTON - Barton. S. Mallion, 69, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2002, at his home in Ludington following an extended illness.
      Barton was born June 20, 1932, in Traverse City, the son of the late Louis and Dorothy (Moser) Mallion. After attending school, Barton went on to work for the C&O Car Ferry as an able-bodied seaman. While working for C&O he met and married Marion Wilms on Nov. 2, 1957, in Manitowoc, Wis. In the fall of 1965, Marion and Barton moved to Ludington and Barton continued to work for the C&O Car Ferry until his retirement on June 30, 1994.
      Barton was a member of the Ludington Outboard Club, and loved hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling with his family.
      Barton is survived by his wife, Marion Mallion of Ludington; his daughter, Marilyn (Marvin) Brault of Ludington; two sons, Jim (Cathy) Mallion of Manitowoc, Wis., and Keith Mallion of Ludington; eight grandchildren, Melissa Mallion of Ludington, Sara Mallion of Manitowoc, Wis., Zachary Swiggum of Manitowoc, Wis., Marlayna and Marvin Brault III, Marshall and Mariah Brault, and Joshua Haner, all of Ludington; three stepgrandchildren, David and Katie Melin of Ludington, and Damon Pickett of Whitehall; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Bice of Ludington; special family friend, Linda Wise of Ocala, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
      Along with his parents, Barton was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Mallion of Mountain Home, Idaho; his sister, Nora Mae Dewar of Traverse City; three brothers-in-law, Ralph Pierce of Traverse City, Jack Chance of Ponca City, Okla., and Clarence (Pat) Lardie of Ocala, Fla.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 22, at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Ludington, with the Rev. Thomas Bochne and Pastor Joe Hilyard officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service at the church.
      Donations in remembrance of Barton may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
      Oak Grove Cremation Center in Manistee is in charge of arrangements.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Douglas E. Bates, 92, of Williamsburg, died Friday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 12, 1910, in Lake Ann, he was the son of Lloyd E. and Athalinda (Fewins) Bates. On April 28, 1935, in Frankfort, he married the former Luella A. Nordahl, who survives.
      Mr. Bates was employed as an iron worker for Traverse City Iron Works for 20 years. He was also a farmer in Acme for 20 years, moving to Acme from Lake Ann in 1935. Mr. Bates was a member of the Acme Township Board from 1960 to 1992. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and square dance calling.
      Other survivors include his son, Murray D. (Audrey) Bates of Dearborn; his brother, Gerald (Iva) Bates of Traverse City; his sisters, Harriet Gauthier of Cedar and Jean Skipski of Traverse City; his four grandchildren, Sally (Kevin) Foley of Minneapolis, Michael (Bella) Bates, Katherine (John) Wilkinson and Thomas Bates, all of the Detroit area; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Toney Fred Bates, Richard Bates, James Bates and Murray Bates.
      Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 22, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marvin Rosa officiating. Burial will be in Acme Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Acme Fire Department.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Jeannette Georgia Bannon, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, April 19, 2002, at her Traverse City home.
      She was born in Suttons Bay on November 5, to Fred R. and Mildred E. (Hartman) Thoreson. On May 19, 1938, in Traverse City, she married C. Dale Bannon.
      She moved to Ludington in 1943, where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Standard Oil Company and also managed a rooming house. In 1964, she moved back to Traverse City and worked for Milliken's Department Store.
      She had a great love for her family and friends, and always placed other's needs before her own. Jeannette loved to dance, and enjoyed ballroom, western, clogging and square dancing. She was a member of Holiday Squares in Leesburg, Fla., where she lived every winter until 1996. She was also a member of Joy's Melodies Square Dancing Club in Traverse City. Jeannette was also skilled in knitting and crocheting, and made many wonderful items for her family and friends. She also donated hundreds of afghans to local nursing homes.
      Jeannette was a member of RSVP of Traverse City, and the Traverse City Senior Center Kitchen Band. She was a member of the Pine Grove Church of God of Traverse City.
      She is survived by her four children, C Dale (Marilyn) Bannon of Ludington, Elizabeth (Eb) Aldridge of Traverse City, Patricia Bannon of Traverse City, and Sandra Bannon and her husband, Thom Wressell of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Cliff Bannon, Bill (Pam) Bannon, Yvonne (Scott) MacArthur, Jennelle Wressell, Kellen Wressell, Kimberley Walter and Velvet (Andy) Batteiger; great-grandson, Chaz Mertes; niece, Janet (Robert) Hoffman of Grand Rapids; two nephews, Eric and Jon Thoreson of Kentucky; and special stepdaughter, Elda (Robert) Soneral of Cadillac.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, C. Dale Bannon on April 12, 1964; her brother, Arthur Thoreson; sister, Alice Thoreson Riskey; and grandson, Joshua Dale Passer in 1974.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m., Monday, April 22, at the Pine Grove Church of God, with Pastor Marc Hoard officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Grove Church of God, The Traverse City Senior Center, or to a charity of one's choice.
      We thank our Heavenly Father for taking her home and granting her eternal life.
     
      JODY LEE HAMILTON, 30, of Boston, formerly of Bear Lake, died Friday, April 19, 2002, in Boston.
      Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, April 22, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home, with Pastor David Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Springdale Township Cemetery.
     
      MADELINE NOGGLES, 80, of Interlochen, passed away at her residence on Saturday, April 20, 2002.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      JOSEPHINE CARRIE PETERSON, 85, of Frankfort, went to her eternal rest Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.
      The family has requested cremation. No services are scheduled.
      Arrangements by the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
      JANICE A. ROEBUCK, 75, of Traverse City, died on Saturday April 20, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ELMER G. "AL" WILDE, 82, of Grayling, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his home.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling.
      Visitation will continue at the Kaul Funeral Home in St. Clair Shores on Tuesday, April 23 from 2 to 9 p.m.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 24, at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores.
      Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.

      HONOLULU, Hawaii - Charles J. Gallison, 79, formerly of Elk Rapids, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
      Born October 5, 1922, in Detroit, he was the son of Charles H. and Antoinette Gallison. On April 12, 1947, at Christ the King Church in Detroit, he married Jeanette O. Wooll.
      "Chuck" was a career Detroit police officer for 28 years. He retired in 1972, and with Jeanette built a home on Bass Lake in Elk Rapids. They moved to Cantonment, Fla., outside of Pensacola, seven years ago but continued to return to Elk Rapids every summer. Chuck left Florida in February 2002, and relocated to Hawaii.
      He is survived by his son, Dennis C. (Anita) Gallison of Farmington Hills; his daughter, Kathleen I. Gallison of Aiea, Hawaii; two grandsons, Brian and Timothy Gallison; and many nieces and nephews.
      Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; his parents; and his brother, Ralph Gallison.
      A memorial reception will be held on Sunday, June 16, 2002, to celebrate the lives of both Charles and Jeanette Gallison at Windows Restaurant on Bay Shore Drive in Traverse City. Please contact Kathleen Gallison at kgallison@kraft.com or call her at (808) 722-3550 for additional information.
