August 4, 2002ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy Elizabeth Herkner, 88, of Traverse City, died Saturday morning at Bortz Health Care.She was born May 26, 1914, in Traverse City, the daughter of Arthur and Adeline (Furby) North. On Dec. 24, 1932, in Traverse City, she married Percy W. Herkner. Percy preceded her in death on July 6, 1994. A homemaker who enjoyed raising a large garden, Dorothy helped her husband on their farm in Edenville, where they lived for 55 years prior to returning to Traverse City in 1989. While in Edenville, she was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service (U.M.W.) of the Edenville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Edenville Women's Card Club. She really enjoyed being with her relatives and friends. Dorothy is survived by her son, Robert (Mary) Herkner of Edenville; her grandsons, Daryl of Flint and Kevin (Shelly) of Houston, Texas; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Gladys (Vince) Herkner of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Leona Mae in 1934, and her four brothers, Guy, Carl and Walter North, all of whom lived in Traverse City, and by Orle North, who had lived in Evart. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Sinclair of First Congregational Church officiating. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Activity Fund at Bortz Health Care. TRAVERSE CITY - Ellen Maurine Smith, 87, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Ellen was born the daughter of Walter A. and Mary Ann (Byers) Boone on Sept. 24, 1914, in Bingham Township. She later married William R. Smith on August 27, 1946. Ellen was a sergeant in the U.S. Army WAC during World War II serving as a teletype operator, and was honored as WAC of the month. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and sang with the choir for over 55 years. Ellen worked for the Total Petroleum Company for six years, retiring in 1972. She is survived by her husband, William R. Smith; her daughter, Sally (John D.) Berlin of Beulah, and her son Glenn R. Smith of Traverse City. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Walter W. Smith; brothers Arland Boone and Jacob Boone; and her sisters, Blossom Boone and Gladys Sanborn. Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Smith officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grand Traverse Pavilions. The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is serving the family. CLIO - Vila D. Palmer, 97, of Clio, passed away, Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Maplewood Manor. Born July 20, 1905, in Old Mission, Vila was a resident of the Traverse City area prior to moving to the Flint area in 1941. She was a charter member of Eastwood United Methodist Church in 1945, and served as their organist and as a Bible School teacher. Vila also was a member of the church sewing circle and made delicious pasties. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting and sewing for her family. She is survived by six sons, Charles A. Palmer of Swartz Creek, Niles A. (Wilma) Palmer of Clio, Ramon E. (Mary Lou) Palmer of Flushing, Douglas D. (Rosa) Palmer of Flushing, Richard A. (Marion) Palmer of Flint, and Dale M. Palmer of Burton; three daughters, Betty E. (William) Cromwell of Flint, Esther M. (Carl) Keel of Burton, and Coralie A. Christensen of Hesperia; 45 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Vila was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Palmer on Feb. 28, 1978; son, Clyde in 1930, and daughter, Amarallys Miller on July 25, 2002. The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 5, from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dodds-Dumanois Funeral Home in Flint. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Eastwood United Methodist Church, 3812 Whittier St., in Flint, with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. A committal service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Friends desiring to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider Heartland Hospice. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the First Christian Church in Traverse City. DANIEL ROBERT 'BOB' O'CONNELL, 75, of Fife Lake, died early Friday morning, Aug. 2, 2002, surrounded by his family.
