TRAVERSE CITY - Aune Manty, pillar of her family and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, died in Washington DC while visiting her son and his family.
Aune enjoyed 83 years of active and joyful life as a "hands-on Lutheran", working through difficult times with "sisu", Finnish for gritty determination, touched with graciousness. She had a zest for life, enjoying travel and design. She was clever, taking on unexpected challenges with determination. When her husband became ill, she took over his construction company. She used these skills later as a talented home builder at her home in Traverse City, and at the 1780s Maryland home of her son's family. Aune was also a talented homemaker, creating luscious freezer jam, prize winning cakes, and her signature "Curly Rolls", Finnish cardamom bread. Through her compassion, Aune lived her faith, helping others. She became a psychiatric nurse after caring for her handicapped sister-in-law. She continued nursing at the Traverse City State Hospital for 20 years. As Regional Coordinator for Lutheran Social Services, Aune helped raise over $25,000 with help from parishioners and Oleson's Food Stores. She also was a veteran "Bethlehem Tuesday Morning Quilter" who knit, sewed and created products to assist Lutheran Social Services homes across the state.
Aune freely gave all of these gifts and more to her friends and family. Daughter Diane shares her compassion, and son Dale her cleverness.
She was born in Gwinn on Jan. 18, 1919, the fourth child of Frank Uitto and Ida Mattson, both from Ilmajokki, Finland. She joined her husband Edward, who preceded her in death Aug. 24, 1977.
She is survived by much loved daughter, Diane (Larry) Green of Traverse City, and son, Dr. Dale (Liz Tuckermanty) Manty of Cheverly, Md.; along with grandson, Mark Thiel of Traverse City, and granddaughters, Ann Marie (John) Lardie of Grawn, Kiija Manty and Hillija Gwynne Manty of Maryland; and five great-grandchildren. Aune is also survived by four brothers, George Uitto, Frederick Rosten, Bernart Rosten, from Marquette County, and Roy Rosten from Durango, Colo., and a sister, Lois Kisch of Westland; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members, blessed with her love.
