Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where family will receive friends today, Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 8 p.m. PHOTO FLAG Anthony Edward 'Tony' Wilhelm Died December 7, 2002 KINGSLEY - Anthony "Tony" Edward Wilhelm, 76, of Kingsley, formerly of Traverse City, died Saturday evening at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 20, 1926 in Traverse City, he was the son of George and Grace (Canterbury) Wilhelm, decendents of a Grand Traverse area pioneer family. On Aug. 16, 1958 at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, he married the former Sally Lou White. A graduate of Traverse City High School in 1944, Tony attended Michigan State University, where he graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Tony proudly enlisted and honorably served his country with the United States Navy during World War II, and later with the United States Air Force Reserves. A retired Traverse City businessman, Tony, from a young age, was associated with Wilhelm's Inc. encompassing Wilhelm's Department Store and Wilhelm's Sports Shops located in Old Town. The family business dated back to 1886 and continued until 1986 when Tony retired. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed participating in water, downhill, and cross-country skiing, especially participating in the Vasa. His other hobbies included horseback riding and bicycling. Tony was a member of the Traverse City Masonic Lodge #222 F&AM, Traverse City Shrine Club, American Legion, and the Boy Scouts of America-Scenic Trails Council, serving as a scout master. He was also a former board member of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Businessmen Association, Traverse City Exchange Club, and the Michigan Trail Riders Association. Known as the unofficial mayor of Old Town, Tony, who touched many lives with his gentle ways, will be dearly missed by many. He is survived by his loving wife, Sally L. Wilhelm of Kingsley; one daughter, Amy L. (Patrick M.) LaBenne of Fredericktown, Ohio; one son, Christopher E. (Earlene B.) Wilhelm of Midland; three grandchildren, Kirsten, Devin and Rachael; one sister, Dorothy F. (Wayne) French of Traverse City; one brother, G. Howard (Peggy) Wilhelm of Irmo, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. The Wilhelm family will receive friends at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. No services are planned. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Wilhelm family lot at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society or to Boy Scouts of America-Scenic Trails Council. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. PHOTO Alma L. Weber Died December 7, 2002 KINGSLEY - Alma L. Weber, 74, of Kingsley, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center. She was born in New Orleans on Aug. 11, 1928, the daughter of Waldemar and Edna (Blue) Menzel. On April 5, 1953, she married Jack B. Weber in Traverse City. Alma taught school in Texas and Flint, and was a former member of the Kingsley school board. She was very active in helping children. She was a member of St. Johannes Lutheran Church and the Altar Guild. Alma sold Tupperware, enjoyed ceramics and taught ceramics to a 4-H group. She also enjoyed baking, cooking and entertaining family and friends. She had a good sense of humor. Alma is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jack Weber of Kingsley; a daughter, Vivien (Dave) Snyder of Kingsley; three sons, R. Thomas (Lee Ann) Weber, Kris (Kathy) Weber, and Tony (Gail) Weber;, all of Kingsley; 10 grandchildren, Lisa, Nicole, Danielle, Jay, Kali, Ashley, Adam, Samantha, Sarah and Robin; three great-grandchildren, Chloe, Noah and Emma; two sisters, Dorothea Schaffer and Phyllis Rush; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harvard Mayo Menzel; and a sister, Elaine Menzel. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at the funeral home, with Pastor Kelly Todd officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. PHOTO Vernie Clair Richie Died December 9, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Vernie Clair Richie, 91, of Traverse City, died Monday morning at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born July 28, 1911, in Traverse City, he was the son of Moses and Florence (LaLonde) Richie. On Aug. 23, 1930, in Traverse City, he married the former Rose M. LaLonde, who preceded him in death in 1986. A lifelong resident of the area, Vernie had been employed as a cook at the Traverse City Regional State Hospital for many years. During World War II, he assisted the war effort by working for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. After the war, Vernie returned to Traverse City and became the owner of Richie Applicating Company for roofing and siding. In his retirement, he worked for a gumball concession company serving the surrounding area. He was a member of the Eagles Club and the Masonic Lodge #222 F&AM, both in Traverse City. He is survived by his two daughters, Rose (James) Laukhart and June (Merlin) Dumbrille, both of Traverse City; sister-in-law, Rosabelle Richie of Muskegon; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Along with his wife, Rose, Vernie was also preceded in death by his brother, Ivan Richie. A Masonic Candlelight service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday evening, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Traverse City Masonic Lodge-Building Fund. Curtis "Butch" Merrill Died December 1, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Curtis "Butch" Merrill, 60, formerly of Grayling and Traverse City, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at a nursing home in Hudson, Fla., after a long illness. Survivors include his former wife, Patty of Florida; mother, Marilyn Trailer and half-brothers, Michael and Wayne Trailer, all of Traverse City; two half-sisters and two half-brothers in Arkansas; three half-sisters in Michigan; and a sister, Lynn Merrill Isenhauer of Grayling. Butch was preceded in death by his father, Richard Merrill; and step-father, Thomas Trailer. Cremation will take place. Local arrangements by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. PHOTO John J. Kreps Died December 6, 2002 MANTON - John J. Kreps, 90, of Manton, died Friday, Dec. 6, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born in Lake Ann on June 19, 1912, the son of Edwin T. and Clemma (Bowers) Kreps. He married Ruth Gustaf on June 10, 1933, in Traverse City. She preceded him in death in 1985. In 1987, in Manton, he married Dorothy Bever, who preceded him in death in 1997. John's family moved to a farm in Traverse City when he was seven years old. He graduated from Traverse City High School in 1931 and was employed by Michigan Bakeries, and later for Chris Craft in Cadillac. He returned to Traverse City in 1950, where he and his wife, Ruth, owned and operated Kreps Grocery Store for 23 years. After his retirement, John was employed at Elmwood Golf Course in Traverse City for many years. He was a member of the Manton First Christian Church and was a Mason, Shriner and former member of the Elks Lodge #323. John was a skilled handyman who fixed, repaired and built things for others. He enjoyed working outdoors and gardening, in addition to enjoying all sports, especially bowling, boxing and football. He possessed a great sense of humor and a deep love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John is survived by his children, Benard W. (Marita) Kreps of Wakarusa, Ind., and Joan (John) McGuffin of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Toni Kreps, Andrew (Andrea) Kreps of Indiana, Mishelle (Paul) Prouty of Colorado, Kristen (Douglas) Lautner of Illinois and Robert (Nicole) McGuffin of Colorado; his great-grandchildren, Evin, Nathaniel and Keenan Prouty, Brennan, Spencer and Noah Lautner, and Kailan McGuffin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Esther Kreps, Hazel Clark and Mildred Abbott; three brothers, Arthur, Darwin and Joseph; and a granddaughter, Kelcey Kreps. A memorial service will be held at the Manton First Christian Church on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Jean O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Manton First Christian Church. Envelopes will be provided at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton, and the church. The family is being served by the Hall Funeral Chapel of Manton. FLAG Randall G. 'Randy' MacNeil Died December 7, 2002 THOMPSONVILLE - Randall G. "Randy" MacNeil, 57, of Thompsonville, formerly of Traverse City and Mt. Clemens, passed away suddenly on Saturday. He was born March 21, 1945, the son of Stephen and Joyce (Trombley) MacNeil. On March 16, 1996, he married Laura Streebing in Thompsonville. Randy served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969 as a First Class Petty Officer. He was a member of the Interlochen V.F.W. He worked in the maintenance department at the Park Place Hotel since 1999. Randy had many passions, boating, fishing, hunting and bowling. He achieved his one dream in 1993 when Randy and his son, Craig, bought Pinepointe Party Shoppe in Interlochen. He moved the family up here from downstate and called this God's country. Surviving are his wife, Laura; his children, Kristen Rose, Craig (Theresa) MacNeil, Kimberly (C.J.) Carmien and Cameron MacNeil; stepchildren, Kari Jennett and Scott Jennett; eight grandchildren, who were the loves of his life, London, Ashlyn, Devyn, Caleb, Collin, Taylor, Alayna and Alyson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Stephen MacNeil. Funeral services with military honors under the auspices of the Cherryland V.F.W. Post #2780 will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to the time of the service. FLAG Robert Joseph 'Bob' Furtaw Died December 7, 2002 RAPID CITY - Robert Joseph "Bob" Furtaw, 78, of Rapid City, formerly of Alma, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. He was born in St. Louis, Mich., on Oct. 25, 1924, the son of Robert and Lulu (Nye) Furtaw. He married Patricia "Elaine" Huber on Oct. 20, 1945, in St. Louis, Mich. A member of the 82nd Airborne during World War II, Bob received two purple hearts for injuries in battle. He worked as a maintenance supervisor, retiring in 1986 from Alma Products Company. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Elk Rapids, and was previously a member of the Alma V.F.W., D.A.V. and the Alma Elks Club. Bob enjoyed retirement and his home on Skegemog Lake. He especially liked spending time with his family, as well as traveling, golfing, bowling and fishing. Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia "Elaine" Furtaw; son, Ron Furtaw of Gaylord; daughter, Patricia Jones of Manistee; son, Timothy (Doris) Furtaw of Cannonsburg; son, Terry (Celia) Furtaw of Sault Sainte Marie; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, with Evening Prayer at 7 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the church, with the Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski as celebrant. Interment will be in Chapel Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Antrim County Commission on Aging. FLAG Henry Sedlacek Died December 7, 2002 KINGSLEY - Henry Sedlacek, 77, of Kingsley, died Saturday, Dec. 7, at Veterans Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born in Traverse City on Jan. 11, 1925, the son of Rudolph and Anne (Krye) Sedlacek. Henry was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed woodworking and concrete finishing, and named his concrete mixer "Henrietta." A veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Henry was an expert marksman and enjoyed hunting. He also loved baseball and played catcher. Henry was a member of the Muskegon Elks Lodge and the Manton V.F.W. Post #7806. He was well-liked in the community. Henry is survived by three brothers, Raymond Sedlacek, Rudolph Jr. (Vesta) and Francis "Jake" (Thelma) Sedlacek, all of Kingsley; two sisters, Vlasta Booth of Vera Beach, Fla., and Anne Jones of Kingsley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, William, Joseph and Edwin Sedlacek. Visitation will take place today, Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, with the Rev. Char Minger officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kingsley, with full military honors by the Cherryland V.F.W. Post #2780. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kingsley Fire Department. Georgia Louise Frederickson Died December 6, 2002 FRANKFORT - Georgia Louise Frederickson, 77, of Frankfort, died Friday, Dec. 6. She was born in Joyfield Township on July 29, 1925, the daughter of Louis and Georgia (Rossel) Lamb. On Aug. 10, 1943, in Detroit, she married Renald Frederickson, who survives. Georgia was a homemaker, living on the Frederickson family farm with her husband. She enjoyed yard sales and going out to dinner, and loved animals. In addition to her husband, Renald, she is survived by her son, James Frederickson of Frankfort; four grandsons; five great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. Her parents and two sons, Ronnie and Daniel Frederickson, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13, at the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Cy Bowman officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benzie County Animal Welfare League. |
