On New Year's Eve in 1941, "Doc" married Jean Russell McCallum, a 1942 graduate of the MSC Veterinary School. Dick and Jean moved to Elsie in 1942, and bought an existing veterinary practice. Dick practiced in Elsie until his retirement in 1975. Dick and Jean raised four children in Elsie and lived there until they moved to the "40" on Hager Road north of Fife Lake in 1975. In the mid-'60s, Dick became a member of the Michigan Trail Riders, a group of people devoted to horseback riding, and served as president of the organization for three years and as a board member for 15 years. It was through the Michigan Trail Riders that Dick became acquainted with so many wonderful friends in the greater Traverse City area. He treasured his friends and was making new friends until he passed away.

He enjoyed horseback riding, buggy and covered wagon driving, cross country skiing, making maple syrup and working out of doors. As a devoted MSU Spartan, Dick especially enjoyed the opportunity to have Sparty, the MSU mascot, ride with him in his buggy in the 1991 Cherry Royale Parade.
