ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP - Gertrude Esther Rieger, 84, of Elmwood Township, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Cedar Creek Commons.
      She was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Detroit, to Leo and Ida (Boike) Dueball. On March 22, 1941, Gertrude married William Rieger in Detroit.
      Gertrude's real passion was teaching and she spent 20 years as an elementary school teacher in the Jackson area. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling.
      She is survived by three children, Bill Rieger of Barton City, Judy Rieger of McKinleyville, Calif., and Toddy (Jim Nugent) Rieger of Suttons Bay; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and her sister, Irene Munzel of Harrison Township.
      Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, William Rieger in November of 1986.
      A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Douglas Krengel officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Memorial Garden in Jackson.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Heifer Project International or Jackson Interfaith Shelter, 414 S. Blackstone, Jackson, Mich.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ruth F. Hickey-Bohrer, 89, a resident of Traverse City since 1979, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002.
      Born in Traverse City on Sept. 11, 1913, Ruth was the daughter of Frank and Florence (Derr) Mertes. She married Merlin J. Hickey in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1977. Ruth married Ralph Bohrer in 1987.
      A homemaker, Ruth was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Cadillac and belonged to various church-related groups. She also enjoyed painting ceramics.
      Ruth is survived by her husband, Ralph Bohrer of Traverse City; her son, Jim (Charlotte) Hickey of Interlochen, and her daughter, Karen (Ed) Piontek of Portage; two stepdaughters, Bonnie (Ted) Peltier of Elberta, Sue (Bob) Crandall of Traverse City, and two stepsons, Ron (Jo Ann) Bohrer of Traverse City and Ray (Stephanie) Bohrer of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Brent (Lori) Hickey, Aaron (Kelly) Hickey, Mary Piontek and Todd Piontek; two great-grandchildren, Ian and Jacob Hickey; 10 step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lucille Samuelson of Traverse City.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Merlin; and two step-grandchildren in infancy.
      Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be announced in the spring of 2003.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Father Fred Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Aletha Florence Avery, 99, a resident of Traverse City for 90 years, died Wednesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born Aug. 8, 1903, in Vicksburg, she was the daughter of Welton G. and Loretta (Knapp) Struble. On July 22, 1922, in Muskegon, she married Guy I. Avery, who preceded her in death in 1972.
      Aletha had been formerly employed by Cherry Growers for 10 years and the F & M Packing Company as a floor lady for 15 years. She was a former member of Oak Park Congregational Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
      She enjoyed deer and rabbit hunting until the age of 87.
      Survivors include two sons, Raymond C. Avery of Kingsley, Guy J. (Joann) Avery of Traverse City and her daughter, Gertrude (Roy) Everson of Grawn; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Along with her husband, Guy, Aletha was also preceded in death by her daughter, Beatrice Wylie; nine brothers and sisters; and one grandson, David R. Everson.
      Cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
      Inurnment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      EDITH 'IRENE' EDWARDS, 84, of South Boardman and formerly of Oakwood, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Knoxville, Tenn.
      Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Oakwood Community Church. Visitation will continue Sunday, Dec. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home of Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska. Burial will be in Lodi Cemetery in Orange Township.
     
      ELIZABETH J. GOODRICH, 78, of Manistee and formerly of Freesoil, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee, with a rosary prayed at 8 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Burial will follow the Mass in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
     
      BASIL 'KENNY' KENT, 80, of East Jordan, formerly of Echo Township, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with visitation from noon until the time of the services.
     
      CECIL HENRY ROSSMANN, 88, of Elmwood Township, died Dec. 10, 2002, at his home.
      Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, and burial will follow the service in Arlington Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wis.
