Obituaries

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Darrell Wayne Wys, 50, died Dec. 10, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.
      A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday Dec. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
      Darrell is survived by a devoted family and a multitude of friends and loved ones including his wife, Connie (Clay) Wys of Charlotte; his daughter, Renee Young and his son, Josh Clay, both of Charlotte; his mother, Geneva Wys of Traverse City; and siblings Mr. Melvin Workman, Mrs. Barbara Maleski, Mrs. Sandra Reamer and Mrs. Beverly Schaub, all in the Traverse City area. He was also the beloved uncle of many nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
      Darrell was born in Bracken County, Kentucky on Nov. 22, 1952, the son of the late Larry Wys of Florida and Geneva Wys of Traverse City. His family moved to Traverse City when he was a young boy and that is where he remained throughout most of his adult life. He moved to Charlotte in 1996 with his wife and children, and built a huge circle of friends.
      Darrell worked in construction from his teenage years to the present.
      He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, sports of all kinds, cooking, camping, traveling and scuba diving.
      Thank you to all of our great friends and neighbors for the love and support you have shown our family during this trying time.
      The family also wishes to thank the wonderful staff of doctors and nurses at Presbyterian Hospital ICU. We know Darrell received the best possible care during his stay with you.
      A memorial service will be held for his Charlotte family of friends after the holidays. Details will follow.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Lyle Sparks Jr., 78, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Owosso, to Lyle and Gladys (Pierce) Sparks. Lyle served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action in four major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. He married Vera May Wright on Aug. 2, 1947 in Owosso.
      Lyle was employed with the Traverse State Hospital as a cook for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He was also considered a talented machinist and carpenter. Lyle was a member of the First Christian Church in Traverse City. He enjoyed hunting, camping and riding his snowmobile.
      He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vera Sparks of Traverse City; two daughters, Diana Lynn Sparks and Darla Jean Seigh, both of Traverse City; grandchildren, Paul (Jenny) Sparks and Crystal and Kelsi Seigh, all of Traverse City; and his brother, Earl (Ginny) Bayliss of Bay City.
      Lyle was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Mallory.
      Friends may call Monday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at First Christian Church with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Carl Lyon, 91, of Traverse City died Saturday Dec. 14, 2002.
      Born in 1911, in Leelanau County to Norinne and Earl Lyon, Carl was the oldest of seven children. He grew up on a farm in Williamsburg.
      Carl was a hard worker all his life. He taught school in Glen Arbor, worked as a gunsmith and retired as a nursing attendant from the Traverse City State Hospital. After retiring, Carl was never idle. He created pine needle baskets and taught his silversmithing and lapidary skills at Goodlife Trailer Park during winters spent in Mesa, Ariz. Carl was an avid reader of National Geographic magazine and western novels.
      Carl is survived by his wife of 71 years, Vona (Dumbrille) Lyon; his daughter Yvonne Berger; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother.
      He was dearly loved and will be missed.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday Dec. 30, at 1 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
     
      JANET IRENE BARTH, 67, of Omena, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the services Tuesday. Burial will be in Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport.
     
      MARY JANE HARLAN, 85, of Rapid City, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long-term Care Unit.
      Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery.
     
      ALICE APPLEGATE SMITH, 87, of Northport and formerly of St. Simons Island, Ga., died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
      There are no services scheduled at this time.
