Obituaries

FRANKFORT - Glenn I. Stone, 83, of Frankfort, died Saturday evening at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital LTC.
      Glenn was a lifelong resident of Benzie County, born Oct. 8, 1919 in Beulah, the son of Gilbert and Florence (Lipp) Stone.
      Glenn attended Michigan State University for two years, studying agriculture, which he applied to his farming knowledge. He was a partner with his father and two brothers in fruit and Christmas tree businesses for many years. Upon the death of his father, Glenn and his two brothers, and later his nephew Lee, formed a partnership in the fruit and Christmas tree businesses. After the partnership dissolved, Glenn raised and sold Christmas trees for more than 20 years.
      Glenn was an avid fan of both Frankfort and Benzie Central sports, attending many football and basketball games. He enjoyed playing tennis when time allowed. He was a member of the Blaine Christian Church.
      Glenn is survived by his wife, Audrey of Frankfort; daughter, Susan Stone of Minnesota; two step-daughters, Judy DeYoung of Frankfort and Heddi-Sue Holtrey of Interlochen; three step-grandchildren, Stefan, Nathan and Jason Holtrey; two brothers, Gene (Florence) of Beulah and Gil (Jerry) of Belmont; nephew, Lee (Chris) of Beulah; and two nieces, Jan (Cameron) Tonn of Beulah and Midge (Dave) VandeKopple of Grand Rapids.
      Cremation has taken place, with interment in Benzonia Township Cemetery. No services are scheduled.
      The family was assisted by the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
      TRAVERSE CITY - William Paul "Bill" Watkoski, 60, of Elmwood Township, died Sunday morning, Dec. 15, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Traverse City, the son of Paul E. and Lois A. (Ashmore) Watkoski. On Nov. 21, 1964, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he married the former Jean I. Houghton.
      A Traverse City native, Bill graduated from St. Francis High School in 1959. Bill retired in 1998 after 35 years of dedicated service as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Traverse City. He was a member of the Eagles Club-Aerie #383, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1213, serving in many capacities during his membership in the 3rd and 4th degrees.
      Bill enjoyed and loved promoting polka music and dancing at the Knights of Columbus for over 20 years. He also enjoyed growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables for his family as well as many friends. His other interests included bowling and attending sporting events, especially watching his five grandsons participating in hockey, football and soccer.
      Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Jean I. Watkoski of Traverse City; daughter, Pamela (Dan) Marsh of Traverse City; two sons, William J. (Lana) Watkoski of Traverse City, and Michael "Mick" Watkoski of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Thomas, Eric, and Jordan Apsey and Paul and Bobby Watkoski; three sisters, Sandra (Jerry) VanHuystee of Suttons Bay, Pat (Don) Witkowski of Traverse City, and Cathy (Glenn) Stroop of Holland; several uncles and aunts, including a very special aunt, Lucille Ely of Traverse City; many nieces and nephews; and his special buddy, Spike, a black Labrador Retriever.
      Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Paul E. and Lois A. Watkoski.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., where a scripture service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. with Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ruth T. Higgins, formerly of Traverse City, died Dec. 14, 2002, in Apex, N.C., at the home of her eldest daughter who lovingly cared for her in her final years.
      She was born Nov. 3, 1907 in Port Huron, to Theodore and Nina (Newberry) Kaumeyer.
      Ruth will be remembered as a fun-loving individual who was very creative with fabric and yarn.
      She is survived by her daughters, Janice Lane (Sanford) of Apex, N.C., and Barbara Montgomery (Robert) of Traverse City. She is also survived by four granddaughters, Barbara Langley, Meg Rossman, Nancy Baum and Catherine Tucker; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Olga Sumner of Oscoda.
      Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Red" Higgins; and two granddaughters, Nina Lane and Marcia Montgomery.
      Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Lucille Steed, 91, of Interlochen, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Born Aug. 1, 1911, in Wexford, she was the daughter of Albert and Eddis (Wetherby) Guernsey. On June 10, 1933, on the family farm near Buckley, she married Kenneth Herbert Steed, who preceded her in death in Sept. 2002.
      Lucille was a 1930 graduate of Cadillac High School and graduated from County Normal in 1931. She taught in the Copley School in Wexford County in 1931 and 1932. Lucille later taught kindergarten, first and second grades at Interlochen Elementary School in the 1950s. She was a Michigan Merit Mother of the Year in 1961 and served several years on the Michigan Mother's committee.
      Lucille was the first president of the Interlochen Women's Club and was awarded a life membership to the club. She established and taught Sunday School for many years at the Interlochen Community Church.
      Lucille enjoyed writing and reading poetry, and over the years wrote numerous 50th anniversary and commemorative poems. Her other interests included gardening, playing cards (especially "setback"), Scrabble, and watching Lawrence Welk.
      Lucille is survived by one daughter, Fayma A. (Dean) Kuhn of Traverse City; son, Herbert L. (Jane) Steed of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Kathee McCafferty, Debra Clem, Michael Kuhn, Ed Steed, and Tonia Steed; eight great-grandchildren, Alexis and Jillian McCafferty, Courtney, Caitlyn, and Madison Clem, Matthew Kuhn, Sophia Bondi, and Julieta Bristilo.
      She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Myrna Ruth Steed in 1935; brother, Edmund Guernsey; and sister, Eloise Guernsey.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Richard Skar will be officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the West Bay Covenant Church.
      WILLIAMSBURG - Ernest Lester "Ernie" Mallery, 84, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 at his home.
      Ernie was born Dec. 6, 1918, in Shiawassee County, the son of Lylah Pearl (Donahue) and Lester George Mallery.
      A veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 through 1945 with the U. S. Army, Ernie was stationed in China, Burma and India with the Signal Corp. On May 15, 1943 in Alexandria, Louisiana, Ernie married the former Beata Alice O'Connor.
      Ernie retired from Michigan Bell as a construction supervisor and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Ernie enjoyed boating and was a charter member of the Airstream Club.
      He is survived by his wife, Bea; by his sons, Tom (Chris) Mallery of Cedar and Dick (Gaila) Mallery of Williamsburg; his grandchildren, Tabatha, Kevin and Maggie; and a great granddaughter, Lexie. Also surviving is a brother, Robert Mallery of Bellaire; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beulah and Ned Russell of Flint; brothers-in-law, Victor (Mary) Blandin of Acme and Jim (Helen) Montague of Flint; and several nieces and nephews.
      Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Margaret Blandin.
      Memorial services are being planned for the spring. Burial of Ernie's cremated remains will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Isadore.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of one's choice.

      RENO, Nev. - Scott M. McNally, 46, formerly of Flushing, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, in Reno, Nev.
      Scott was born in Flint, on April 4, 1956, the son of Richard F. and Shirley (Minter) McNally. He graduated from Valley School of Flint in 1974. A professional musician and songwriter, Scott attended Mott Adult Education and also received music education in Sausalito, Calif. He graduated from cosmetology school in Seattle, Wash. Scott's generosity and caring spirit were reflected in his music and poetry.
      He is survived by his parents, Richard and Shirley McNally of Williamsburg; sister, Kathryn J. McNally of Montague, Mass., and brother, Richard F. (Christine A.) McNally Jr. of Flint; niece and nephew, Caitlin C. and Franklin T. McNally of Flint; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
      Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Rossell Funeral Home, 307 E. Main St., Flushing.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 704 E. Main St., Flushing. The Rev. David Kulchar and the Rev. Robert Eidson will officiate. Burial will follow in Flushing Cemetery.

      COLUMBUS, Ohio - Raymond Dorse Mock, 93, formerly of Traverse City, died Sunday at the Westminster-Thurber Community in Columbus, Ohio.
      Born in Tipton, Ind., on Feb. 20, 1909, he was the son of Raymond Earl and Minnie Frances (Watson) Mock.
      Mr. Mock was a former executive vice-president for the Pepsi Cola Co. He was a member of the Upper Arlington Christian Church and the Traverse City Lodge #222 F. & A.M.
      He is survived by his sons, Theodore J. (Mary Jo) Mock of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Jeffray E. (Chanthy) Mock of Columbus, Ohio, and Wendell Duane (Judy) Mock of Kokomo, Ind.; daughters, Sue Ellen (Bob) McClelland of Bend, Ore., and Dreah Mock (Jack) Cheney of Millersport, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgeann.
      A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Deyo-Davis Funeral Home, 1578 W. First Ave., in Columbus on Wednesday, Dec. 18, with Rev. Ben Heskett officiating. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. to the time of the services. Interment will be in Tipton Cemetery.

      ROGER A. CAZEL, 55, of Kalkaska, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home.
      Visitation will take place Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

      WILLIAM ERNEST LEHTO, 92, of Arcadia, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia.
      Edwards Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake is in charge of arrangements.
     
      CHARLES HARRY SCHAEFER, 84, of Pierport, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Cremation was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.
