Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Thorp "Bill" Throop, 84, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Oct. 31, 1918, in Vestaburg, he was the son of Thorp Erastus and Beatrice Pearl (Rhodes) Throop. On June 28, 1947, in Traverse City, he married the former Virginia Allen.
      Bill had been employed for Tannehills Meats for over 25 years and the Traverse City School System for 10 years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fishing, making wine and gardening. Bill was especially well known for his vegetables. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and for always having a story for every occasion.
      He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; his daughters, Janet Kaley of East Lansing and Barbara Weese of Grawn, and his son, James Throop of Traverse City; brothers and sisters, Von Throop, Sid Throop, Laura Owen and Alma Reid, all of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sherry Johnson in 1992; and his son, David Allen Throop in 2002; and his sister, Angie Hull and brother, Frank Throop.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 21, with the Rev. Lois Grettenberger officiating.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice.
     
      OLD MISSION - Barbara June Rohl, 71, of Old Mission, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      She is survived by her husband, Donald Rohl; daughters, Mary Jan Shields, Carol (Pete) Heintz, Gaylene (Dan) Traylor and Deena (Rodney) Davis; brother, Sebert Chase; stepchildren, Connie (Doug) Parliment, Judy (Doug) Harshman, Debbie (Dewayne) Wend and Danny (Sue) Rohl; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
      June was preceded in death by one grandson.
      She was dearly loved and will be missed.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21, with the Rev. J. Michael Caley officiating.
      Burial will be in Barnum Cemetery at a later date.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Peninsula Township Fire Department.

      MAPLE CITY - Sylvia M. Lehr, 91, of Maple City, died Tuesday morning at home.
      Born Sept. 30, 1911, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Desire and Eugenia (Duveyoung) Dugelar. She married Norman B. Lehr, who preceded her in death in February 1983.
      Sylvia was a member of St. Rita/St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling across the country, but her family was the love of her life. Sylvia will be fondly remembered for her great sense of humor.
      Survivors include her son, Norman B. Lehr Jr. of Maple City, and her daughter, Sheila Sandula of Maple City; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marie (James) Madar of Warren.
      Along with her husband, Norman, Sylvia was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Charlotte Lehr; brothers, Henry and Edward; and sister, Leona.
      Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at St. Rita/St. Joseph Catholic Church of Maple City. The Rev. Father William Lipscomb will be serving as celebrant.
      Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation, Munson Hospice, or Detroit Firefighter's Widow and Orphan Fund.
     
      FIFE LAKE - Lois A. McNalley, 55, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at her Fife Lake home following a short illness.
      Lois was born Oct. 10, 1947, in Saginaw to David and Lois (Gary) Rappuhn. She grew up in Saginaw and graduated from Saginaw Douglas McArthur High School in 1965. Lois married James "Mac" McNalley in Shields.
      A resident of Fife Lake since 1979, Lois was a dedicated wife and mother and also a tireless worker for churches, the food pantry and other volunteer organizations. She attended the Light of the North Christian Center in Traverse City. She dearly loved her family and friends.
      Lois is survived by her husband, James; her daughter, Michelle (Scott) Bender of Fife Lake, and her three sons, Michael of Las Vegas, and Matthew and Mackenzie at home; her father, David Rappuhn of Saginaw; three sisters; two brothers; and two grandchildren, Scott and Nicole.
      She was preceded in death by her mother, Lois.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Living Word Church in Manton, with Pastor Tim Mann officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in Fife Lake.

      HARVEY O. DEATER, 87, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Specialty Unit.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 20, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Wolfe Funeral Home. Burial will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery.

      RAYMOND W. DERBY, 74, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Wolfe Funeral Home. Burial will be in Excelsior Township Cemetery.
     
      JOHN L. GRIFFIN, 79, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Cremation has taken place and private family services will take place at a later date.

      DAWN A. LOHR, 74, of Traverse City, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 17, 2002, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
