Obituaries

RAPID CITY - Harvey O. Deater, 87, of Rapid City, passed away on Dec. 17, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      He was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Clearwater Township, Rapid City, the son of Andrew and Lola (Hevel) Deater. Harvey married Helen N. Barber on Jan. 5, 1936, in Kalkaska County.
      He resided in Rapid City his entire adult life. Harvey was a carpenter at retirement, but worked at many other occupations during his lifetime. He was a member of the Rapid City Church of Christ, served as an elected member of the Clearwater Township Board and through the years was actively involved in many community projects.
      Harvey will be mourned by his family, including his wife of 67 years, Helen; his children, Donna (Don) Playford of Jonesville, Ned Deater of Rapid City, Wanda (John) Conway of Mancelona, G. Thomas (Lisa) Deater of Palm City, Fla.; his daughter-in-law, Faye Deater of Sparta; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters; his brother, Harold A. "Bud" (Erma) Deater of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gerald S. Deater; his great-grandson, Mitchell Norton; his sisters, Edith Deveneau, Mary McElrath and Mable Guy; his brother, Hubert Deater; and nine half-brothers and sisters.
      Visitation will be held today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Clearwater Township Cemetery.
      Memorials may be made in behalf of Harvey Deater to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center - Specialty Unit.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Russell P. Claggett, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Nov. 9, 1918, in Maumee, Ohio, he was the son of Clarence S. and Nora (Petersen) Claggett. On Sept. 21, 1940, in Highland Park, he married the former Ruth J. Van Inwager.
      Mr. Claggett had been a resident of Traverse City since 1972, coming from Ann Arbor. He attended Eastern Michigan University and later, during World War II, he was in charge of communication at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti. Mr. Claggett retired as a telephone engineer for Michigan Bell after 41 years of service.
      He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Willow Brook Methodist Church in Sun City, Ariz. His other memberships included the Mason Lodge and Scottish Rite, former member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club, former member and president of the Ann Arbor Golf and Outing Club, member and past president of the Optimist Club in Ann Arbor, past president and very active in the Telephone Employees Credit Union, and served for seven years on the Old Mission Planning Commission.
      Mr. Claggett greatly enjoyed tennis and golf and especially loved his '67 baby blue Mustang.
      Survivors include his devoted wife of 62 years, Ruth of Traverse City; son, David Lee Claggett of Weston, Vt.; daughter, Kathleen M. Schlagel of North Carolina; sister, Fern McIntosh of Sun City, Ariz.; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
      Mr. Claggett was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Beatrice Smith and Dorothy Richards.
      Cremation has taken place.
      A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Central United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002. The Rev. Tamara Williams will be officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church or to the American Heart Association.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      LIMA, Ohio - Joseph A. Berg, 94, of Lima, Ohio, formerly of Detroit and Brighton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Lima, following an extended illness.
      He was born July 16, 1908, in Detroit, the son of Louis and Adele (LeFevre) Berg. Joe attended St. Catherine Schools and graduated from the University of Detroit. He married Audrey Mahlmeister on June 15, 1940, in Detroit.
      A longtime branch manager for National Bank of Detroit, Joe retired in 1973. He was a past member of both St. Rose and St. Juliana parishes, and a member of the Holy Name Society and the Gabriel Richard Knight of Columbus. Joe enjoyed bowling, golfing and was an avid reader.
      He is survived by his two daughters, Judy Jacomet of Lima, Ohio, and Christine Berg of Torch Lake.
      Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey on Dec. 24, 1990.
      Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a scripture service at the Keehn Funeral Home in Brighton, (810) 229-9871.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton. Burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Brighton.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - John Lesley Griffin, 79, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      John was born April 19, 1923, in Traverse City, the son of Dudley and Jewel (Persig) Griffin. He served with the U.S. Navy for six years during World War II. On May 15, 1954, John married Sidonia "Mickey" Zabitch in Crown Point, Ind.
      He was a driver for Mercury Transit for more than 30 years when he retired, and John also enjoyed cherry farming on the Old Mission Peninsula. He collected toy trains and built HO gauge trains throughout his life. He also liked CB radios and belonged to CB radio groups, and loved riding his snowmobile.
      John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sidonia "Mickey" Griffin of Traverse City; his sister, Jayne (Melvin) Bock of Jackson; his favorite niece, Mary Lee Engler; nieces, Lisa Dufort and Janmel Anderson; and his special friends Mark and Karen Gleason.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Leah, Betty and Dorothy; and his brothers, Ben and Dudley.
      Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date.

      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      PAUL LEE KOSIBOSKI, 47, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home with an Evening Prayer Service at 8 p.m.
      Funeral services from the Order of Christian Funerals will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Burial will follow the services at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
     
      MILDRED M. MORAN, 87, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at her daughter's home in Alpena.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      GLADYS I. RHODES, 96, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      RICHARD L. SCOTT, 64, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona, with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.
      A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mancelona.
     
      MONROE W. WHALEY, 90, of Traverse City, died at his home Thursday Dec. 19, 2002.
      Arrangements are pending with the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
