Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Monroe W. Whaley, 90, died at his home Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.
      He was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Cadillac, to David F. and Lena M. (Lyon) Whaley. Monroe was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the First Army Field Artillery and attaining the rank of captain.
      Monroe retired as supervisor in the marketing department of Consumers Power Company after more than 36 years of service. An active man in the communities in which he resided, Monroe was a 25-year member of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of its Home Show Committee, a life member of the National Rifle Association, past member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, member and past exalted ruler and secretary of BPO Elks #680 of Cadillac, past secretary and life member of the BPO Elks #323 of Traverse City, past president of the Traverse City Lions Club, and past president and past regional governor of the Toastmasters International. He was also past commander, past adjutant, past finance officer and life member of Bowen Holliday Post #35 of the American Legion, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post #2780 in Traverse City, life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post #38, past member of the Wexford County Veteran's Trust Fund and a member of the Grand Traverse County Soldiers Relief Commission.
      Monroe is survived by his wife, Dora (Fromholz) Whaley whom he married on Aug. 22, 1998, in Traverse City; his son, James L. Whaley of Muskegon; stepdaughter, Sandra (Roger) Lindley of Suttons Bay, and stepsons Bill (Charlotte) Fromholz of Owosso, Michael Fromholz of Houston, Texas, James (Nancy) Fromholz of Santa Barbara, Calif., David (Barb) Fromholz of Wilmington, N.C., and Jeffrey (Deb) Fromholz of Traverse City; and numerous stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives, Ruth and Anna.
      A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Mr. Rene M. Hoenscheid from St. Patrick's Catholic Church will be officiating at the funeral home service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider memorial contributions to the Father Fred Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Gladys I. Rhodes, 96, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Gladys was born June 7, 1906, in Cadillac, the daughter of Otto and Hannah (Morgan) Carlson. She was a 1924 graduate of Cadillac High School and graduated from Western Michigan College in 1927. In 1930, Gladys married Leo McQueen, who preceded her in death 1953. In December 1969, she married Marcel Rhodes.
      She taught school in Lansing, Traverse City and Blanchard retiring from teaching in 1953. She then worked as an accountant for the Traverse City Iron Works for 10 years and also was a real estate agent for about 12 years.
      Gladys was a member of Grawn United Methodist church, a life member of the Daisy Chain and was an active worker with senior citizens in Traverse City. She loved golf, enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to the Mosell Bennett Sawyer Bridge Club.
      Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her husband, Marcel Rhodes of Traverse City; stepson, Maurice Rhodes of Lake City; step-grandson, Matthew Rhodes of Traverse City; and her nephew, James Houston and niece, Sally Cox both of Cadillac.
      In addition to her first husband, Gladys was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Houston.
      Services will be held Monday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Biteman officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorials may directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
     
      WILLIAMSBURG - Mildred N. Moran, 87, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Alpena.
      She was born on Jan. 27, 1915, in Lansing, the daughter of Mabel (Lickty) and Garfield Garey. On Aug. 18, 1938, in Elk Rapids, Mildred married Thomas C. Moran.
      Mildred, a former school teacher, loved children and was very active in 4-H for many years. She was also active in a weaving club, enjoyed gardening, flowers and crafts, and most recently took up the hobby of bird watching.
      Mildred is survived by her sons, Timothy W. Moran of Williamsburg and Port Mansfield, Texas, and Thomas G. Moran of Williamsburg; her daughters, Carolyn (Richard) Au of E. Lansing and New Zealand, Barbara Moran of Alpena and Mary Ann (Lew) Fudge of Mattawan; brother Robert (Betty) Garey of Savanna, Ga., sister Gladys (Frederick) April of Ann Arbor and sister-in-law, Letha Garey of Flint; her seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Thomas on Oct. 23, 1992; her brothers, William Garey, Albert Edward Garey and George Samuel Garey; and her grandson Michael Au.
      Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father James Gardiner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's of the Woods Barker Creek Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice.
     
      WHELEN A. BRAMHILL, 90, of Traverse City and formerly of River Rouge, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 22, from noon to 9 p.m. at the Girrbach-Krasun Funeral Home, 15748 Fort St., Southgate. There will also be visitation at the church Monday for one half-hour prior to the Mass.
      Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church in Woodhaven.
      Local arrangements were provided by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ELMA E. FALOR, 94, of Manistee and formerly of Kaleva, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 23, from noon until the time of the funeral services at 1 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
     
      RACHEL NICHOLS, 94, of Traverse City, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Tendercare.
      Visitation will be held at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, with a funeral service commencing at 3 p.m.
      A full obituary will appear in a later edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
     
      KATHERINE E. NIELSEN, 84, of Manistee, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      There will be no visitation or services at this time.
      Arrangements are being handled by Johnson Funeral Home, P.C. in Manistee.
     
      BILLY DEAN ROBBINS, 52, of Kaleva and formerly of Ypsilanti, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
     
      ELEANOR L. STEWART, 91, of Beulah, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at The Homesteader in Benzonia.
      Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements.
