Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. JOSIE E. EWING, 81, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at The Maples in Frankfort. Cremation has taken place. The family will be scheduling a memorial service for the spring of 2003. The family was served by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah. GARY D. HOIG SR., 68, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at his home in Mancelona. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. VIVIAN GAY INMAN, 71, of Onekama, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., today, Dec. 27, at the Manistee Chapel of the Oak Grove Cremation Center. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the services. Cremation will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Manistee Chapel of the Oak Grove Cremation Center. ARNOLD L. POPKOWSKI, 88, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements by the Herbert Funeral Home, P.C., Manistee. FLORENCE STROM, 82, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. KEWADIN - William Norman Powell, 78, of Kewadin, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002. He was born in Kewadin on July 15, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Ethel (Haines) Powell. On Oct. 17, 1942, he married Kitty Jennett in Traverse City. This past October they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. Powell was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He retired in 1985 after working as an operating engineer for more than 50 years. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline for about 10 years. A lifelong member of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V., Mr. Powell was also a former member of the Sportsmen's Club. He loved fishing and hunting. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Kitty Powell; children, Pat (Dar) Roger of Caledonia, Janet (Jack) Kamp of Howard City and Bill (Joyce) Powell of Kewadin; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Cross; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma. To honor his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will gather and receive visitors at the Covell Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - John Robert Wright, 72, of Traverse City, formerly of Fenton, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Traverse Manor. Mr. Wright was born in Fenton on Jan. 18, 1931, the son of Grant and Elizabeth (Rothfuss) Wright. He was a 1949 graduate of Fenton High School and had resided in Traverse City since 1964, coming from Fenton. Mr. Wright retired from Bergen Brunswig Drug Corporation with 35 years of service. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by three children, John Nicholas (Karen) Wright of Parker, Colo., Jamie David (Sally) Wright of Ada and Timothy Kevin (Michelle) Wright of Manistee; three grandchildren, Richard Christopher Shaw, Abby Thurston-Wright and John Maxwell Thurston-Wright; brother, Dr. Dennis Charles (Ruth) Wright of Columbia, Mo.; sister, Elizabeth Huff of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister-in-law, Char Wright of Holly; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Grantland Wright. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., today, Dec. 27, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road. Pastor Dale Swihart will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton. Newman, 82, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Tuesday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was born in Traverse City on Feb. 25, 1920, the son of Howard and Amelia (Scheidel) Newman. He married Georgia Temple in Traverse City on Sept. 8, 1945. Mr. Newman was employed at the Ford garage, Parson Aircraft Corp. and retired from United Technologies. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, spending three years in the Panama Canal zones as a platoon sergeant. He received a Good Conduct ribbon, an American Defense Service ribbon, an American Theatre ribbon and six overseas service bars. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Georgia of Traverse City; four children, Patricia Finnerty of New York, David (Sandra) Newman of Lake Leelanau, Kathlyn (Brian) McGrath of Traverse City and Kevan Newman of Kingsley; eight grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and William Newman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with visitation one hour prior to the services. Military honors will be under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post #2780. Brian Smith will officiate. Intement will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
