Obituaries

PATRICIA J. MICHAM, 72, of Grawn died Friday morning, Dec., 27, 2002, at her home.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's Traverse City Record-Eagle.
     
      A memorial service for CARL E. LYON, 91, of Traverse City, who died Dec. 14, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      KENNETH J. DREISIG, 48, of Traverse City passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in West Bloomfield, Mich.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Florence M. Strom, 82, of Wyoming died Christmas night at her home surrounded by her loving family.
      Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Tripoli, Iowa, she was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Liebau) Bunger. On June 5, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, she married William P. Strom, who preceded her in death on May 28, 2001.
      A longtime resident of the Traverse City area, Florence moved to Wyoming in August 2002 to be closer to her family. While living in Traverse City she was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Church Women United. Florence enjoyed volunteer work, especially for Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. She received great satisfaction at being the coordinator for funeral luncheons for her church. Prior to her retirement, Florence served as a cook for Mr. Steak and the Wanigan, both located in Traverse City.
      Survivors include her children, David E. (Linda) Strom of Lutz, Fla.; Karen K. (Ronald) McCallum of Cornelius, Ore.; Barbara J. (William) Branham of Aurora, Colo.; Carl E. (Ok Hui) Strom of Grand Rapids; 10 grandchildren; Jay, Tammy, Kyle, Michael, Doug, Christina, Melissa, Sarah, Christopher and Elizabeth; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Marinna and Kierna; brothers, Burt Bunger of Milwaukee, Wis., and Raymond Bunger of Storm Lake, Iowa.
      Along with her husband Bill, Florence also was preceded in death by her five brothers.
      Memorial services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. today. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel will be officiating. Cremation has taken place.
      Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to Munson Hospice.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      KEWADIN - William Norman Powell, 78, of Kewadin died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002.
      He was born in Kewadin on July 15, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Ethel (Haines) Powell. On Oct. 17, 1942, he married Kitty Jennett in Traverse City. This past October they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
      Mr. Powell was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He retired in 1985 after working as an operating engineer for more than 50 years. He worked on the Alaska pipeline for about 10 years.
      A lifelong member of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V., Mr. Powell was also a former member of the Sportsmen's Club. He loved fishing and hunting.
      Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Kitty Powell; children, Pat (Dar) Rogers of Caledonia, Janet (Jack) Kamp of Howard City, and Bill (Joyce) Powell of Kewadin and Ron Powell of Kewadin; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Cross; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma.
      To honor his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will gather and receive visitors at the Covell Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

      KINGSLEY - Mable E. Henschell-Smith, 94, of Kingsley died Dec. 26, 2002, at her home.
      Born Jan. 16, 1908, in Buckley, she was the daughter of Harmon and Lettie (Van Ness) Roddy.
      Mable married Amiel Henschell in June 1927. He preceded her in death in 1968. She married Laurence Smith in 1979 and was preceded in death by him in 1983.
      Mable was a schoolteacher for 32 years, and spent 28 years teaching in Kingsley. She received her education at Buckley School and County Normal School. She received a bachelor of science degree from Central Michigan College.
      Mable was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church.
      Survivors include her daughter Sandra Hawley of Florida and her son Rex Henschell of Kingsley. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
      Mable was preceded in death by her two husbands as well as by her parents; a son, Max Henschell; a grandson, Rick Henschell; a brother, Asa Roddy, and a sister who died in infancy.
      A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Kingsley United Methodist Church or Munson Hospice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley.
