Obituaries

FRANKFORT - Josie E. Ewing, 81, of Frankfort died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Josie was born in Joyfield Township on Sept. 2, 1921, the daughter of Harvey O. and Viola (Lapland) Steele. On Sept. 14, 1939, in Kalamazoo, she married James J. Ewing, who preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 2002.
      Josie was employed as a waitress. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.
      She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Gerald) Lentz of Kalamazoo, Sally (Eldon) Moss of Beulah, and Suzanne (Eric) Vigland of Cornville, Ariz.; son, Joseph (Connie) Ewing of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Richard Steele of Interlochen, Wesley (Opal) Steele of Traverse City, Harvey (Greta) Steele of Interlochen, Duane (Betty) Steele of Jackson, and Jerry Steele of Interlochen; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
      In addition to her husband, Josie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Amy Leipzig.
      Cremation has taken place. The family will be scheduling a memorial service for the spring of 2003.
      The family was served by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      LLOYD BARNES, 71, of Traverse City died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      Memorial services for MARLENE J. CARROLL, 67, of Northport will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport.
     
      FRANKLIN 'FRANK' HUMPHREY, 58, of Traverse City died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley.
     
      ROY LOUIS LOVELY, 90, of Grayling died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Visitation will take place today, Sunday, Dec. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel.
      Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling.
     
      DR. JAMES H. MOODY, 69, of Traverse City died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 28, 2002, at his home.
      Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      CLARE W. PETERSON, 66, of Manistee died Saturday morning, Dec. 28, 2002, at his home.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Manistee, with visitation from noon until service time at the church.

      EDITH M. 'TOOT' STEWART, 87, of Traverse City died Friday evening, Dec. 27, 2002, at Arbor House.
      Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      DOUGLAS M. THORNTON, 76, of Kingsley died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at home in the company of his entire family.
      Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - D'Etta "Dolly" Gauthier Streb of New Port Richey, Fla., died Christmas Day, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      D'Etta was born Jan. 17, 1916, in Joplin Mo. Formerly a longtime resident of Lake Leelanau, she was very active, along with her late husband Robert Gauthier, in building the V.F.W. facility there.
      She also was greatly involved with the St. Mary parish chicken dinners, and, as a cancer survivor, was a dedicated worker for the American Cancer Society of Leelanau County.
      After retiring from the U. S. Postal Service, D'Etta made New Port Richey, Fla., her home, and in 1994 she married Gregory F. Streb, also of New Port Richey, in a ceremony celebrated in her beloved Leelanau County.
      In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Margaret (John) Bufka; grandson, Thomas (Sheila) Sophiea; granddaughters, Bethany (Robert) Parth, Theresa (Charles) McDonald, Michelle (Joseph) Curtis, Tricia Sophiea and Sara D'Etta Sophiea, all of Traverse City, and Susan (Mike) Dissinger of Stevensville. Also surviving are one sister, Wanda (Hank) Beaudoin of Florida; one brother, Pal Sears; a sister-in-law, Blanch Plamondon of Cherry Bend; and 13 great-grandchildren.
      In addition to her late husband, Robert E. Gauthier, D'Etta was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister, a grandson, a granddaughter and her only child, son Robert M. Sophiea of Lake Leelanau.
      A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Mary's Church building fund, or to St. Vincent De Paul of Traverse City.
     
      GRAWN - Patricia Joyce "Pat" Micham, 72, of Grawn died Friday, Dec. 27, at her home.
      Pat was born in Leland on June 19, 1930, to Paul and Josephine (Popa) Maleski. As a child, she lived on North Manitou Island. On Nov. 8, 1947, in Lake Leelanau, she married Alfred H. Micham, who survives.
      Pat retired from Burwood Products after 25 years of service. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all.
      Pat was an avid animal lover, wild and domestic, and especially loved her dog, Pee Wee, and her cat, Cat-Cat. She also enjoyed collecting dolls and tending to her plants and her flower garden.
      Besides her husband, Alfred, she is survived by a daughter, Paula (Jerry) Milbert Olman of Grawn; grandchildren, Josephine "Jody" (Jeff) Higgins of Madison Heights, May (Trevor) Cross of Alanson, Danielle Brosch of Traverse City, Gary Milbert Jr. of Grawn, Kelly Jo Olman and Brandi (Tom) Kelly, both of Traverse City, Theresa Strink and Kathy Mroz, both of Allington; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Emma) Maleski of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Chester Alfred and Arthur Henry Micham; a sister, Helen Price; and two brothers, Chet and Edward Maleski.
      Visitation will take place Monday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the family.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Lawrence J. "Larry" Fisher, 79, of Traverse City died Thursday, Dec. 26, at Country View Assisted Living.
      Born Feb. 11, 1923, in Traverse City, Larry was the son of Charles and Maude (Gibbs) Fisher. On Nov. 7, 1942, in Muskegon, he married Lois J. Dinger, who preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2000.
      Mr. Fisher was a longtime member of College Terrace Wesleyan Church. He owned Fisher Cleaning Service in Traverse City for 16 years, and then worked for 18 years at the Medical Care Facility, retiring in 1989. He also worked part time at the Salvation Army Church, and especially enjoyed bell-ringing for the Salvation Army at Christmastime.
      Larry loved bowling, and bowled in several leagues over the years. He was active at the Senior Center in Traverse City, and played in the Kitchen Band.
      Survivors include his daughter, Karen (Dennis) Ax of Allegan; sons, Garry (Brenda) Fisher of Traverse City and Michael Fisher of Traverse City; brother, Charles "Bud" Fisher of California; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews.
      In addition to his wife, Lois, he was preceded in death by his parents.
      Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 31, at College Terrace Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Tim Morris officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time.
      Memorials may be directed to the College Terrace Wesleyan Church.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
