Arrangements were handled by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. LOUIS J. ROCQUE JR., 82, of Mancelona died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Cornerstone Community Bible Church, 6821 County Road 612 NE, in Kalkaska. Arrangements by Wolfe Funeral Home. MYRTLE LUELLA SCHIMKE, 92, of Whitehall, formerly of Chief, died Saturday evening, Dec. 28, 2002, in Whitehall. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Bear Lake Chapel of the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Bear Lake Township Cemetery. The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to the Bear Lake Chapel of the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home. RONALD E. THAYER, 60, of Traverse City died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Franklin E. "Frank" Humphrey, 58, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002. He was born in Elk Rapids on March 29, 1944, the son of Alger and Bernice (Smedley) Humphrey. Frank was a heavy equipment operator for Traverse Bay Gravel for 25 years. He is survived by three sisters, Ruth (Edwin) Maze of Remus, Irene (Al) Ockert of Traverse City and Violet Miller of Redlands, Calif.; two brothers, Robert (Helen) Humphrey of Traverse City and Elton (Gerri) Humphrey of Traverse City; and a sister-in-law, Linda Humphrey of Traverse City. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Floyd Humphrey and Eugene Peterson. Visitation will take place today, Monday, Dec. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home, with Rev. Jerry Micketti officiating. Interment will be in Barnum Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society. TRAVERSE CITY - Clara Julia Bembeneck, 98, of Traverse City, formerly of Hannah, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Dec. 28, surrounded by her loved ones at Munson Medical Center. She was born in Mayfield Township, Grand Traverse County, on June 9, 1904, the daughter of August and Helen (Wolf) Rahe. She married Bernard J. Bembeneck Jr. on April 16, 1929, at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church. Mrs. Bembeneck was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City, and was a former member of St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church, where she was very involved in church activities. She enjoyed crocheting and frequent trips to the casino. Mrs. Bembeneck is survived by her children, Eugene (Phyllis) Bembeneck of Kingsley, Robert (Thomasine) Bembeneck of Traverse City, Alfred (Janet) Bembeneck of Kingsley, and Kathleen (Charles) Lautner of Williamsburg; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Yanska of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Bembeneck Jr. in 1975; infant son, Gerald; grandson, Russell; great-grandson, Jefferey; two brothers, Peter and Jacob Rahe; and three sisters, Cecelia Rahe, Mary Fasel and Catherine Weber. Visitation will take place today, Monday, Dec. 30, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, from 5 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Rev. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Cemetery. BATTLE CREEK - Doretta Caroline (Schad) Bachman, 89, of Battle Creek died peacefully after failing health on Friday in Augusta. Memorials may be made to Mass Intentions, St. Mary's of Hannah School, or to the charity of one's choice. She was born in Western Springs, Ill., on Aug. 1, 1913, to Fred C. and Emma (Heckel) Schad. Doretta was a graduate of Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority. She earned a bachelor's of science degree in biology. In 1986, Doretta was honored to receive the Golden Hoods Degree from Beloit College. From 1935 to 1946, Doretta worked in her chosen field at Billings Hospital at the University of Chicago, Fort Sheridan, Ill., and at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., where she met her husband, Richard R. Bachman. They were married in Santa Fe on Dec. 1, 1945. Doretta was active in many activities while she and her husband made their home and raised their family in Battle Creek after 1946. She was a member of the A.A.U.W., a founding member of the Tri Delta Alumni Club, and a member of the Panhellenic Association. She was a Cub Scout den mother, Blue Bird and Girl Scout volunteer, and member of the Battle Creek Women's League, serving as president from 1985-86. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 54, and the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, its Altar Guild and LWML. Doretta and her husband were marvelous gardeners, having vegetable gardens, perennial and annual gardens, and more than 30 different varieties of deciduous, evergreen and flowering trees around their home. They also designed and planted many bulbs and unusual plants at their family's funeral home. They enjoyed traveling, first with their children, all over the country; then to Alaska, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean on trips and cruises. Doretta enjoyed nature, was an avid bird-watcher, and enjoyed her many pets. When her children were young, she always made their Halloween costumes, volunteered with their various classrooms and school activities. Through many little acts of love, she made holidays, Christmas and other occasions very special. She is survived by a son, Frederick B. (Susan K.) Bachman of Battle Creek; a daughter, Priscilla B. Bodamer of Traverse City; a granddaughter, Kari Michelle (Craig) Grestini of Thornton, Colo.; two nieces, one nephew and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard, in 1995; and her son-in-law, Jerry Bodamer in 2000. Visitation will take place after 9 a.m. today, Monday, Dec. 30, at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Chapel in Battle Creek, with the family present from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Cherryland Human Society. |
