December 31 2002ObituariesFLAGPHOTO Herbert L. Epley Died December 29, 2002 PERRY - Herbert L. Epley, 85, of Perry, died Sunday at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. He was born in Durand on Aug. 3, 1917, the son of Charles Laverne and Sylvia May (Haynes) Epley. On June 2, 1951, he married Christine Ranowsky in Flint. Mr. Epley graduated from Durand High School and Western Michigan University. He served in World War II and was a life member of the 3rd Armored I Company, and the V.F.W. Cherryland Post #2780 in Traverse City. Mr. Epley spent most of his life in Kalamazoo, Traverse City and Zephyrhills, Fla. He was a retired industrial engineer and a member of Nazarene Church of Perry. He is survived by his wife, Christine Epley of Perry; son, Gerald Francis (Eileen) Welton of Traverse City; granddaughter, Christine Welton, and grandson, Allen Welton, both of Traverse City; brother, Otis (Louise) Epley of Durand; and sister, June (Bart) Mass of Zephyrhills, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., today, Dec. 31, at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel, with Pastor George Harris officiating. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. PHOTO Edith M. 'Toot' Stewart Died December 27, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Edith M. "Toot" Stewart, 87, of Traverse City, died Friday afternoon at Arbor House. Born May 28, 1915, in Marion, she was the daughter of George and Nell (Wigglesworth) Lowry. On July 5, 1952 in Marion, she married Charles B. Stewart, who preceded her in death on June 29, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Franklin Lowry. A resident of Traverse City since November 1975, Toot formerly resided in Wyandotte. She volunteered for many organizations including the Veterans Hospital in Dearborn. Toot was a retired school teacher and a graduate of Central Michigan University and maintained a membership with the Central Michigan University Alumni Association. She enjoyed bowling and bridge. Toot had been a resident of the Arbor House since her husband's death in 1998. She thoroughly enjoyed the home-like atmosphere at the Arbor House, along with the loving, compassionate care extended to her by Cindy Robertson and her staff. The Stewart family is very grateful. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Michael Laycock of DeWitt; and two grandsons, Shawn and Jason. Toot is also survived by four nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. PHOTO FLAG Dr. James H. Moody Died December 28, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Dr. James H. Moody, 69, of Traverse City, died Saturday at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 5, 1933, in Garrettsville, N.Y., he was the son of Stan and Eva (Morton) Moody. On Dec. 3, 1983 in Oswego, N.Y., he married the former Patricia Laden, who survives. An ordained minister and Christian school teacher, Dr. Moody served as pastor of and taught in various churches and schools in New York, Pennsylvania, and most recently, in Fife Lake. His greatest joy came from preaching and teaching the Bible. Dr. Moody served his country honorably with the United States Army. He is also survived by his son, Tom J. (Melissa) Moody; daughter, Michelle (Ken) Larson; grandchildren, Seth, Audrey and Caleb Larson, and Sierra Moody; sister, Grace Gevert; brother, Stanley (Joan) Moody; two aunts, Arlene Morton and Edna Smith; and two cousins, Ethel Blair and Howard Owen. Dr. Moody was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Louise Moody; and his daughter, Charlene Moody. Thayer Died December 27, 2002 GRAWN - Ronald E. Thayer, 60, of Grawn, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002. He is survived by five children, Brian Thayer and Kevin Thayer, both of Muskegon, Vicky Thayer of Grand Rapids, Tim Thayer of Traverse City, Paul Thayer of Grand Rapids; and eight brothers and sisters. Patricia Ann Merrick Died December 29, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Patricia Ann Merrick, 60, of Chicago, formerly of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002. Pat was born Sept. 17, 1942. She spent the past 25 years living in Traverse City. Recently she moved to Chicago to live with family. She was a loving and compassionate woman. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her. Pat was the loving mother of June White, and her husband, Bill White. She was the devoted daughter of Anna May Horne, dear sister to Geri Surdyk, Joan Fort, Lillie Mendoza and George Horne. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Aprille and Emily White. Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church, 3700 N. 62nd St., Chicago. Memorial donations can be made to the St. James Hospice Unit. Kenneth James Ferguson Died December 22, 2002 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Kenneth James Ferguson, 19, passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, at Vanderbilt Trauma Center, from injuries due to a single-car motor vehicle accident. He was born in Hollywood, Fla., in 1983. Kenneth is survived by his parents, James and Robin Ferguson of Dickinson, Tenn.; his grandmother, Mary Ann Ferguson of Largo Fla.; his grandfathers, H. Kenneth Ferguson of Traverse City and Bob Lytle of Dickinson, Tenn.; sisters, Christine of Dickinson and Kellie of Traverse City; many uncles, aunts and cousins; and all of his friends spread across the country. A memorial fund has been set up in Kenneth's name at the Dickinson Co. Humane Society, where he volunteered his time caring for unwanted animals. A remembrance service will be planned in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Dickinson Co. Humane Society. The family was served by Phillips-Robinson Co. |
