February 10, 2002ObituariesBUCKLEY - Grayce M. Kuhn, 95, of Buckley, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.Born May 4, 1906, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Kraft) Tomlinson. On June 2, 1932, in Detroit, she married Forest H. Kuhn, who preceded her in death in March 1990. Grayce attended Cleveland Bible Institute and together with her husband, the Rev. Forest H. Kuhn, was instrumental in the beginning years of the Buckley Gospel Tabernacle. A homemaker, she was a kids camp mother for over 30 years. Grayce loved flowers and especially gardening. Survivors include two sons, Dean (Fayma) Kuhn of Traverse City and Dennis (Pat) Kuhn of Buckley; one daughter, Darlyene (Ron) Elie of West Milton, Ohio; one sister, Helen Beutner of Florida; one brother, Hayes (Fran) Tomlinson of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Grayce was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Harold Tomlinson; and an infant sister, Dorothy. Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at the Buckley Gospel Tabernacle in Buckley on Monday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Shelder and the Rev. Ron Elie will be officiating. Burial will be in Cornell Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Buckley Gospel Tabernacle. TRAVERSE CITY - Paul A. Stewart, 53, a resident of Traverse City for 13 years, and formerly of Alpena, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at his home. Paul was born in Alpena on Aug. 8, 1948, the son of William and Genevieve (Lucas) Stewart. He married the former Georgann Moldenhauer on Aug. 5, 1978, in Lewiston. Paul was employed with Eagle Picher in Traverse City for the past six years. He enjoyed fishing and football. Paul is survived by his wife, Georgann Stewart of Traverse City; his four sons, Bill (Lynn) Henski of Alpena, Michael Dorner of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Joshua Stewart and Peter Stewart, both of Traverse City; his mother, Genevieve Stewart of Alpena; and his two grandsons, Joshua Henski of Alpena and Caleb Stewart of Traverse City. He was preceded in death by his father. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with the Rev. William Lipscomb officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice. Arrangements were entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - James C. Frye, 51, of Traverse City, died Friday at Munson Medical Center, after a courageous 11-year battle with myasthenia gravis. Born Oct. 27, 1950, in Traverse City, he was the son of H. Charles and Lois J. (Rule) Frye. A commercial painter, Jim was an avid Nascar racing fan and also enjoyed fishing, boating and especially the beaches of Grand Traverse Bay. Survivors include his mother, Lois Sodergren of Traverse City; his father, H. Charles (Nancy) Frye of Traverse City; sisters, Sharon (Joe) Brigham of Traverse City, and Jennifer (Thomas) Coy of Dearborn; stepbrother, Mike (Kim) Sodergren; stepsisters, Barb (Henry) Bowers, and Shirley (James) Barnett; nieces, Amy, Amber, and Alyssa LaForest; grand-niece, Haley LaForest; and a very dear friend, Rick Gray of Traverse City. Jim was preceded in death by his stepfather, Warren Sodergren. A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Monday, at 1 p.m., where friends may call from noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. The Frye family is very appreciative of the care and compassion extended to Jim by the physicians and staff of Munson Medical Center. LAS VEGAS - Orlena J. Canham, 74, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, following a brief illness. Orlena was born Jan. 3, 1928, in Springfield, Ill. Formerly of Traverse City, Orlena had been a member of Central United Methodist Church. She was a school teacher by profession and taught for 10 years at St. Francis Elementary School. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved to Las Vegas in 1994, where they were residents of the Sun City Retirement Village. Orlena is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald R. Canham of Las Vegas; her daughter, Catherine Canham Kearns and her husband, Mark Kearns of Houston, Texas; her sons, Ronald R. Canham of Tucson, Ariz., and Thomas R. Canham of Evanston, Ill.; her six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. ROSE ALBERTA DECHOW, 85, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 9, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospice in Indianapolis. A Funeral Mass is being planned for sometime in April, with a date and time to be announced at a later date. Arrangements are pending with the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. MARION W. SEESE, 78, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. KALKASKA - John "Jack" Waters, 75, of Kalkaska, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Jack was born March 6, 1926, in Battle Creek, the son of Albert and Dorothy (Herbert) Waters. Jack was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy on the YMS 179 Mine Sweeper. He married Geraldine D. Snyder on Nov. 23, 1946, in Battle Creek. Jack was employed as a firefighter crew chief at a VA Hospital, retiring after 37 years of service. Jack and Geraldine moved to Kalkaska in 1979. Jack was instrumental in organizing the Cold Springs/Excelsior Township Volunteer Fire Department. Jack was a member of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jack is survived by his loving family including his wife of 55 years, Geraldine; his daughter, Janet (Bernie) Kores of Kalkaska; his sister, Isabel Jean Helper of Battle Creek; his grandchildren, Erika Kores, Jared Kores and Meghan Kores; his great-granddaughter, Lauren Kores; and his niece, Cynthia (Ronald) Treadwell of Battle Creek. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the Wolfe Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Stark, of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. GRAWN - Bessie Hulett, 80, a lifetime resident of Grawn, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Bessie was born in Grawn on Jan. 7, 1922, to Arthur Malcomb and Gail (Hand) Hargraves. Bessie wed William Hulett in Traverse City on Jan. 16, 1946. Bessie was a member of the First Christian Church in Traverse City. Formerly employed as a school bus driver for Monroe Center, Bessie then went to work for Munson Medical Center, where she retired in 1983. Bessie enjoyed crocheting, watching old movie musicals, and was also an avid reader. She was very proud of her grandchildren. Bessie is survived by her daughter, Ellen Marie Lemcool of Phoenix, and her son, Charles (Rosemary) Hulett of Traverse City; her two granddaughters, Jessica Hulett, Teresa Hulett, and her grandson, William Hudson, all of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William in 1986; two sisters and three brothers. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Mark Robert Steele, 43, died Thursday in Traverse City. Born March 19, 1958, in Frankfort, he was the son of Jerry A. and Alice Ann (Comstock) Steele. On May 23, 1992, under the apple tree at the family home, he married the former Cynthia Lynn Carpenter, who survives. A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, Mark was a 1976 graduate of Traverse City High School. He served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy. Mark enjoyed hunting, especially deer camp. Other survivors include his three children, Michael Ray Steele, Steven Allan Steele and Nicole Ann Steele; father, Jerry Steele of Honor and Bokeelia, Fla.; sister, Vickie Sue Kimball of Klamath Falls, Ore.; one brother, Jonathan Steele of Interlochen; and 18 nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Alice in 1988; maternal and paternal grandparents; and stepmother, Bonnie Steele in 1999. A service of prayer for family and friends will be held at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Zagore officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to a fund being established to benefit Mark and Cynthia's children in care of Cynthia. |
