Obituary

JOHN "WILLARD" NOFSINGER, 76, of Kalkaska, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at his home.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Wolfe Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Excelsior Township Cemetery.
      Arrangements by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
     
      LORETTA A. WARD, 89, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, at the Grawn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Biteman officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      FLUSHING - Judge R. Gerald Barr, 84, of Flushing and Port Huron, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
      Judge Barr was the first World War II veteran to serve as Michigan Commander of the American Legion. He was an attorney and then St. Clair County probate judge for 18 years. He wrote the bill which places picture IDs on Michigan drivers' licenses. Judge Barr was a 33rd Degree Mason, president of the International Association of Assessing Officers (CAE), president of the State Probate Judges Association, active in the State Bar Association, Elks Club, Lions Club, Optimist Club, the Shriners, Boy Scouts of America, Gideons International, Easter Seals, the American Red Cross, Scottish Rite and many other organizations. Judge Barr was appointed to the Michigan State Tax Commission under four governors.
      He is survived by his loving wife, Kay; his daughter and son-in-law, Kandy and Rick Griswold of Flushing; and his daughter, Geri Colleen Black of Sarasota, Fla.; his grandsons, Jeremy Hrisca, Ryan Hrisca, Patrick Griswold, Douglas Black II, Kevin Griswold and Jordan Black; his sister, Betty Dinger of Mesa, Ariz.; and his brother-in-law, Judge David Vokes of Grosse Pointe.
      Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service is planned.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International, Hurley Hospice, or the National Parkinson's Foundation.

      THOMPSONVILLE - Floyd Leroy Bower, 82, of Thompsonville, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Floyd was born July 12, 1919, in Linwood, the son of Peter and Bessie (Currie) Bower.
      Floyd was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II; and he was a past member of the American Legion Post #393 in Hulbert.
      Floyd had worked for the Village of Thompsonville as the maintenance superintendent for 25 years until retiring in 1982. He loved to watch the deer and birds in his backyard, and he enjoyed tinkering in his garage, hunting and spending time in his garden and tending to his blueberries.
      On Jan. 6, 1943, in Alameda, Calif., Floyd married Adeline M. Reed, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, Floyd Bower Jr. of Grant; four daughters, Margie Malkowski of Thompsonville, Marie Bower of Texas, Sara (Robert) McCleary of Thompsonville and Edna (Thomas) Pinkowski of Interlochen; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Floyd was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Jackie Bower and Sally-Jo McCleary; three brothers, David Bower, Peter Bower and Carl Bower; and two sisters, Charlotte Avery and Bessie Riley.
      Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      FOLSOM, Calif. - Esther M. DeYoung, daughter of Chester and Vera McGlothlin, was born in Saginaw, on Aug. 26, 1932. She earned a bachelor's degree in music in 1954 at the University of Michigan. The same year she married Ted DeYoung, who was in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Texas. In 1958, she earned a master's degree from the University of Texas and began a long career in music, leaving a rich musical legacy in several communities. The family moved to Sacramento where she taught piano, voice and served as organist at Westminster, El Camino Community and First Baptist churches. In 1968, she was winner of the North California/Nevada, San Francisco Opera Auditions. That same year the family moved to N. Reading, Mass., where she helped found the N. Reading Choral Society, where she conducted and served as music director. She also served as organist at the Union Congregational Church, taught at the high school and gave private lessons. In 1974, they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she helped found the Idaho Falls Opera Theatre, was the principal mezzo-soprano and served as president and conductor. She was also organist at First Presbyterian and First Congregational Churches. In 1986, they moved back to Sacramento, where she served as organist at Folsom Presbyterian until she retired in 2001.
      Esther also loved to fly her Cessna 182. She held private and instrument certificates, was a member of the International Organization of Women Pilots (99's), Chair of the Eastern Idaho Chapter of the 99's, flew Palms to Pines Air Race in 1988, Air Race Classic in 1989, from Sacramento to Philadelphia and flew with Ted around the country.
      She leaves her loving husband, Ted of Folsom, Calif.; daughter Jennifer and grandson, Jenson, of Fair Oaks, Calif.; and brother, Harold of Traverse City; and other family and friends.
      Graveside services will be held in the spring at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Date and time will be announced by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home at that time.

      DAVISON - Alger E. "Al" Lauderbach, 86, of Davison and Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Genesys Health Park.
      Al was born in Bay City on July 29, 1915, the son of the late Charles and Blanche Lauderbach. He married Leila Hawkins on March 29, 1940, in Flint.
      Al proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the American Legion, DAV, Davison Masonic Lodge #236 F.&A.M. He was also president of Cherry Ridge Development in Traverse City. Al retired from Fisher Body I in 1972, after 38 years of service.
      He is survived by his wife, Leila; his children, Delores (Julius) Carlson, Alger (Georgina) Lauderbach Jr., Carol (Raj) Rajagopal, Connie Winkler, Shelly (Joe) Bush, and Cindy (Jesse) Machado; his 13 grandchildren, Lynda (Les) Young, Laurie (Michael) Little, Joan (John) Shult, Lisa Nugent, Sandie (Kevin) Jackson, Sheila (Todd) Coulam, Patrick McNulty, Janet McNulty, Julie Rajagopal, Jolene, Leila, Kahiau, and No`eau Machado; his 9.5 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lois Bendickson.
      Al was preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Lauderbach.
      The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, and again on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 E. Davison Rd., in Davison.
      A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb., 25, at the funeral home, with the Rev. P. Thomas Wachterhauser officiating. Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by the Davison American Legion Post #267.
      Memorial contributions may be made to either the Davison United Methodist Church, or Christ United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      The family would like to thank the staff at Alterra-Winwood and the staff in Genesys Emergency Room and 4th floor for the excellent care given to Al.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Eric Lee Little, 38, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at home.
      His greatest love was playing guitar and he was currently a member of the band "Bad Monkey". He was previously a musician in "Rukus" and "Silence Denied". He also worked in construction and painting.
      He had resided in Traverse City for the past seven months, moving from Boyne City. He previously lived in Bellaire.
      Eric was born Oct. 11, 1963, in Saginaw, the son of Roger L. and Evangeline (Bruce) Little.
      He was preceded in death last year by his mother.
      Surviving are his father, Roger L. Little of St. Charles, Mo.; a son, Kieffer Yurgaites of Bellaire; two brothers, Mark B. (Jenise) Little of Rapid City, and Michael S. Little of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; and two nieces, Krista Little of Rapid City, and Brandi Little of Rancho Cordova, Calif.
      The family will receive friends today and Monday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire, with the Rev. Mary Brown officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire.
      ATLANTIS, Fla. - Ernest Mayes MacDonald, 81, a retired certified public accountant and trucking industry executive passed on peacefully Feb. 2, 2002, in Atlantis, Fla.
      Ernie MacDonald, a resident of Atlantis, Fla., and Glen Arbor, was a native of Detroit. He graduated from Wayne State University in 1942 with a degree in business administration and then served as a master sergeant with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in London during World War II. After the war, he married the former Elizabeth Ann Schaefer and remained happily married for over 50 years. He was a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand and, starting in 1961, was an executive with Commercial Carriers, Inc. (part of Texas Gas Corporation and later Ryder Trucking), including positions as controller, treasurer, vice president of finance, administration and personnel until his retirement in 1982. He continued to work as an income tax consultant for clients until his passing. Ernie MacDonald was a lifelong Christian Scientist.
      Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth MacDonald; one son, Gary Alan MacDonald of Potomac, Md.; and two granddaughters, Lora Elizabeth and Sara Helen MacDonald. He is also survived by his sister, Jo Anne Dohring; and his brother, Lawrence J. MacDonald.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 175 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02115.
     
      HONOR - Margaret Louise Wildie, 79, of Honor, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at her residence.
      Margaret was born April 18, 1922, in Girardeau, Mo., the daughter of Albert and Emma (Altenthal) Sprenger.
      Margaret owned and operated the Duchess Cafe` in Honor for 10 years until 1976. She had also worked as a teller at Honor State Bank during the 1960s. After owning the Duchess Cafe`, Margaret was involved with the Senior Companions of Traverse City for about five years. She was a past member and Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Honor. In her spare time, Margaret enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, dancing and spending time with friends and family.
      Margaret is survived by her daughter, Margie (Gregory) Harnden of Honor; her three sons, Bruce (Avace) Wildie of Traverse City, John (Sue) Wildie of San Antonio, Texas, and Michael Wildie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Lillian Zundel, Viola (Lloyd) Groves, Marian Glennon, and Barbara Rassmussen; several nieces and nephews; and many bingo buddies, bowling buddies and friends.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and her two brothers, Willard Sprenger and Albert Wilhelm.
      Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, to go towards Hospice House.
