January 20, 2002ObituariesBEULAH - Robert I. Snell, 74, of Beulah, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his residence, surrounded by his family. Robert was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Laura A. (Scharmen) Snell. Robert was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion in Englewood, Fla. Robert was also a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, the Rotonda Golf and Country Club, and he was a charter member of Sunshine Medical Group Golf Association of Englewood, Fla. Robert retired in 1994 after farming for 48 years. He also formed and operated Northwestern Real Estate with his son-in-law from 1974 to 1983. Robert served on the Benzonia Township Board for 15 years, the Benzonia Township Zoning Commission for 12 years, and the Graceland Board of Directors from 1983 to 1995, where he was chairman from 1985 to 1994. On Jan. 31, 1948, Robert married Vivian M. Lautner who preceded him in death in September, 1987. On Jan. 1, 1999, he married Ruth Jaquish of Lake Ann, who survives him. Robert is also survived by his daughter, Cindy (Tom) Gray of Traverse City; his three sons, Bob (Sandy) Snell of Manistee, Bill (Brenda) Snell of Beulah, and Chad (Linda) Snell of Minnesota; two step children, Patty (Mike) Corning of Interlochen, and Dick Jaquish of Lake Ann; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, George K. (Liz) Snell of Florida; and two sisters, Winnie (Lyle) Cook of Frankfort, and Ardith Doler of Oregon. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today at their residence located at 6681 Crystal Dr., Beulah. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, or to the American Lung Association. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Joshua Nathan Bursian, 28, of Traverse City, and formerly of Chief Lake, was gently lifted from the arms of his family to run to the arms of his Father after a short illness, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Josh was born Dec. 12, 1973, in Durham, N.C. He began his life-long witness to everyone he met in 1975, after contracting spinal meningitis. Despite his significant physical disability and many health problems, he faced life with dignity, courage, faith, and never-ending optimism. He was always there when others needed a compassionate listener or a shoulder to cry on, and a fellow MAC user was always an immediate friend. He attended elementary school in Lansing, and then attended and graduated from Onekama Consolidated Schools in 1992. He attended Eastern Michigan University and was currently attending Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City with the hope of completing his degree. During high school and summer vacations from college, he worked at the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee, conducting tours and spreading the story of TJ's hauntings. He was currently employed by Market Source Corporation of New Jersey as a representative for Apple Computer Company. While living in Traverse City for the past two and a half years, Josh spent time on the board of the Bay Area Coalition for Independent Living, serving a term as president, and was currently vice president of the CherryMug Traverse City Area Macintosh Users Group. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva and a faithful participant of their prayer chain. Joshua is survived by his grateful family, including his mother and devoted step father, Ron and Shirley Hagelberg Klemish; his father and step mother, Steven and Barbara Bursian; cherished older brother, Christopher and his son, Connor; grandparents, Milton and Mary Ann Hagelberg, Robert and Betty Bursian, and Woodrow and Lydia Klemish; step siblings, Paul Klemish, David and Audra Klemish and their son, Carter; Jennifer and George Sloan, and Michael and Angela Burston and their daughter, Star. Other survivors include aunts, uncles, numerous cousins, many extended family members, and very special friends, Kyle an Jessica Jacobs, Andy Mason, Karen Sherwood, and Pastor Kenneth and Sue Lein. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva, with Pastor Kenneth H. Lein officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Carillon Fund of Bethany Lutheran Church. The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements. The sign of God is that you will be led to places you did not intend to go. The gift of Joshua is that the journey was such an adventure. TRAVERSE CITY - Tech. Sgt. F. Todd Reeves, 37, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home. Todd was born March 30, 1964, in Reed City, the son of Wayne and Katherine Lynne (Barr) Reeves. On May 14, 1988, at Bible Baptist Church in Traverse City, Todd married the former Tammy Patanella. On July 26 of that year, Todd joined the U.S. Air Force and served until Dec. 26, 2001. Todd was very proud of his commitment to serve our country through the Air Force and had a tremendous love for his country. Following basic training at Lackland AFB, he served at Plattsburgh AFB in New York with the 380th Supply Squadron. During this time he received the honors of Airman of the Quarter once, and Airman of the Year three times. He graduated from NCO Preparatory School as a "Distinguished Graduate". He then graduated from Airman Leadership School earning the "John Levitow" award. Todd also served in Germany and spent 120 days in Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Southern Watch. Todd was reassigned to Moody AFB in Georgia in 1995 and from there, in support of Operation Southern Watch, was deployed to Bahrain for 120 days in 1999. He received his promotion to TSgt. on March 1, 2000. During his 13 year military career, Todd was decorated with 14 medals and ribbons, including the Kuwait Liberation Medal. At his retirement, Todd was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. During his tenure with the Air Force, Todd was known for his great leadership abilities and for mentoring his fellow service men and women. Todd enjoyed hunting, was a great reader of books, and especially enjoyed history. He volunteered his time at a historical museum in upstate New York when he was stationed there. He also enjoyed photography, especially in the black and white medium, and was a licensed firearms instructor. Todd is survived by his wife, Tammy and their children, Amanda and Tristan, to whom he was a wonderful father; by his mother Lynne Reeves of Grayling; his brothers, Timothy Evans of Alpena and Curtis (Deanne) Evans of Charlotte. He is also survived by his nephew and niece Cameron and Madeline Evans, his special nieces, Jennifer and Jamie Evans of Grayling; his grandmother, Katherine Park of DeBary, Fla.; his mother and father-in-law, Linda and Joseph Patanella of Traverse City; a brother-in-law, Joseph (Jennifer) Patanella II of Traverse City; his niece, Angela Rose Patanella; his grandmother and grandfather-in-law, Anthony J. and Helen Marie Patanella and many aunt, uncles and cousins. Also surviving is Todd's dear friend Duane Brooks of Grayling, and Todd and Tammy's dearest friends, Eric and Michelle Harrell of New York state. Todd was preceded in death by his son, Tyler, in 1991, and by his father, Wayne. Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Military honors will be offered by Todd's colleagues from Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Selfridge Air Force Base. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Boston Children's Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. GRAWN - John H. Lemcool, 85, of Grawn, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at his home. John was born on April 20, 1916, in Leelanau County, the son of Dallas and Lilly (Mann) Lemcool. John was a lifelong resident of the area. On Feb. 14, 1946, he married the former Marjorie Disbrow in Traverse City. John was a successful self-employed farmer, fruit farming and also raising beef cattle. He also raised Christmas trees for sale and worked in logging. John loved playing cards, and really enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie of Grawn; his four children, Clifford (Jenell) Lemcool of Grawn, Joyce (Phil) Wright of Grawn, Dallas (Jeanette) Lemcool of Traverse City, and Garry (Kelly) Lemcool, of Grawn; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lillian Peterson; and an infant brother. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dean Bailey officiating. Interment will be in the spring in Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn. KALKASKA - Myrna Louise Russell, 63, of Kalkaska, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Myrna was born on Oct. 4, 1938, in Kalkaska, the daughter of Louis and Eva (Guetzka) Hendershot. Myrna was a member of the Evergreen Bible Baptist Church. Myrna is survived by her loving family, including her children, Melisa (Busty Rapoza) Parsons and Mike Russell, all of Kalkaska, Marcella (Kevin) Guillen of Virginia, Matthew (Rachel Richey) Russell, Melody (David) Dodge, Marla (Rick Grant) Russell, all of Kalkaska, and Molly (Jack) Stewart of Beulah; her mother, Eva Hendershot of Kalkaska; 11 grandchildren; her brother, Elton (Norma) Hendershot of Kalkaska; brother-in-law, Lyle Wagenschutz of South Boardman; dear friend, Polly Wilder of Kalkaska; one half-brother and seven half-sisters; and several nieces and nephews. Myrna was preceded in death by her father, Louis; and her sister, Lucy Wagenschutz. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. KALAMAZOO - Frances Bridget Swiat, age 84, of Kalamazoo, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Frances was born on March 9, 1917, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of James and Mary (Henderson) Carey. Frances was a volunteer with the Red Cross and was also a member of the Bortgess Service League. Frances is survived by her children and their spouses, Jim R. Swiat of Grand Blanc, Rick (Shelly) Swiat of Portage, Sally (Timothy) Hanley of Traverse City and Molly Swiat of Lake Zurich, Ill.; brothers-in-law, Thomas (Jetta) Swiat of Kalamazoo and Leo (Devon) Swiat of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Hanley, both of Traverse City, Amber Swiat, Richard Swiat, Nicholas Swiat, Carey Swiat and Mark Swiat, all of Portage; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received on Sunday, Jan. 20, and Monday, Jan. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Redmond Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be prayed on Monday at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 534 W. Kilgore Rd., in Kalamazoo, with Father James R. Swiat and concelebrants. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kalamazoo. A luncheon will be served at St. Monica's Catholic Church directly following the Mass. DACKOTA CHARLES JONES IRISH, infant son of Regina Irish and Michael Jones of Frankfort, was stillborn Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Monday, Jan. 21, from the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Home, with Pastor Kenneth Blair officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery in the spring. |
