TRAVERSE CITY - Ernest J. Harrigan, 83, lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, passed away, Friday, July 12, 2002.
      Ernest was born March 31, 1919, in Grand Traverse County to the late James M. and Rose Marie (Ockert) Harrigan. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
      He was a truck driver for the Schmuckal Oil Company for many years, retiring in 1981. He loved hunting, fishing and spoiling his grandkids.
      Ernest is survived by his three sons, James (Cathy) of Kingsley, Ron (Holly) of Kingsley and Bruce (Thuan) of Florida; his two daughters, Barb Johnson and her fiancé, Ron Prentice of Kingsley, and Ruth (Clay) Leaym of Traverse City; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; brother, John of Traverse City, and his sister, Joan Bembeneck of Traverse City.
      Along with his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by one grandson, Bryan Beeman; his brother, Dan; and five sisters, Frances, Dorothy, Ruth, Geneva and Mary.
      Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 15, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the funeral home.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley.
     
      HICKSVILLE, Ohio - Richard M. Flohe, 68, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.
      He was born in Suttons Bay to the late Emil and Margaret Flohe. He attained the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, specializing in disarming unexploded bombs. Rich was a member of the American Rifle Association and the Antwerp Conservation Club. An excellent pilot since his days in the Air Force, he loved to fly and also liked to hunt.
      Rich went to work for Deister Machinery in Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1961, where he was an engineering and design specialist and master machinist, and was still working at the time of his death.
      He was a loving and adoring grandfather, and enjoyed the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. Rich always had a soft spot in his heart for homeless children and had provided love and support for many during his life.
      Survivors include his daughter Anita Reichert of Bourbon, Ind., his six sons, Shane Flohe of Cecil, Ohio, John Pendergrass of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Charles Pendergrass of Georgia, Ronnie Pendergrass and Dwayne Pendergrass, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Robbie Theis of Texas; four brothers, Jim (Lucille) of Lake Leelanau, Don (Joanne) of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., Noel (Mary Lee) of Traverse City and Mark of Manton; his sister, Judy (Dave) Harvey of Traverse City; and 18 grandchildren.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Visitation will be held at the funeral home two hours prior to the services. Burial with a military graveside service will immediately follow the funeral services in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lake Leelanau.
      Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School, 310 St. Mary, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Elsie M. Edmondson, 76, a homemaker, cherry grower and antique collector, died Friday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 25, 1926, on Old Mission Peninsula, she was the daughter of Oscar and Esther (Johnson) Sundeen. On June 5, 1948, on Old Mission Peninsula, she married Harold J. Edmondson, who survives.
      Elsie loved her family and friends. She cherished being the third generation on the family cherry farm and had a keen sense for land preservation. She also enjoyed her antique shop, going to garage sales, her gardening and her many pets.
      Elsie was a member of Ogdensburg United Methodist Church, the Cherryland Farm Bureau Group and was an original member of the Maple Grove Junior Friendship Club.
      Other survivors include her children, Tana (Harold) Wilsey of Traverse City, Jane A. Edmondson of Old Mission, Harold D. Edmondson of Old Mission, Julie E. Edmondson of Traverse City; sister, Joan (John) Walters of Traverse City; and one grandson, Dave Wilsey of Traverse City.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and stepmother, Ellen Winnell Sundeen.
      Friends may call on Monday, July 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Mansfield officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph A. DeLorme, 94, a former longtime resident of Traverse City, died June 30, 2002, at J.F.K. Memorial Hospital in Lake Worth, Fla., after a short illness.
      Mr. DeLorme was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and had done extensive volunteer work with several local organizations, including R.S.V.P., Red Cross Blood Drive, United Way, Girl Scouts and the Senior Center Boosters Club. He was retired from Cone Drive Gears in Traverse City.
      Mr. DeLorme is survived by a son, Robert J. DeLorme; brothers, Dan, George and Charles DeLorme; sister-in-law, Mildred Schworm; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by a son, Charles in 1953; wife, Edith L. DeLorme in 1997; two brothers, Albert and Bill DeLorme; and brother-in-law, Ivan Schworm in 1983.
      A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with the Rev. Father James Gardiner officiating. Visitation will take place at the time of the service.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
     
      CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Katherine Lucille Carleton, 90, of Chula Vista, Calif., died June 24, 2002.
      Her birth was assisted by Dr. Kneale Brownson Sr. on Dec. 10, 1911, in a beautiful house in Kingsley. Her parents were the late Jay S. and Etta Mae (Baldwin) Brown. She graduated from Kingsley High School in 1928, where she had played on the girls' basketball team. She then attended beautician school and was the village beautician and manicurist in the early 1940s. During World War II she worked at Willow Run, helping to construct B-24 bombers.
      She was married to LCDR Paul R. Carleton. Following retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1957, they returned to Traverse City, where they both attended Northwestern Michigan College. Later, they were the coed dormitory "parents" for a few years, providing patience, generosity, counsel and guidance to many students. Also during their years at NMC, they performed in and supported several of the college plays. After attending the University of Michigan and Northern Michigan University, she received her bachelor's degree in library science.
      She loved to travel, and Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Philippines, Japan, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Bali and Tahiti were several of the lands she visited.
      She is survived by her son, Reid Paul (Eleanor) Carleton of Chula Vista, Calif.; four grandchildren, Reid P. Carleton Jr., Katherine R. Sperry, Scott A. Carleton and Larry T. Carleton; 10 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 18 months to 17 years; and her brother, Charles Donovan Brown of Cocoa, Fla.
      Memorial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2002. She will be interred with her husband.
      By her request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local hospice, or to your favorite charity.
     
      DR. BARBARA BRADY BURN, 76, longtime summer resident of Long Lake, died in her winter home in Amherst, Mass. on February 22, 2002. She inherited the cottage on Long Lake from her mother, Lucy Jewett Brady, who first came to Long Lake's Forest Lodge around 1900.
      A private family memorial service will be held this summer.
     
      FLORENCE 'FLO' HANNAH (WRIGHT) CUMMINGS, 92, formerly of Traverse City and summer resident of Alden since 1949, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Alterra Sterling House in Springfield, Ohio.
     
      M. GLENN GROSSMAN, 72, of Traverse City, formerly of Detroit, died July 8, 2002 at home.
      A memorial service will be held Monday, July 15, at noon at Congregation Ahavat Shalom (at the Universalist Congregation building), 6726 Center Road on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City.
     
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, for RONALD W. MEAD, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Elder Michael Mead will officiate and there will be special services by the Benzie Area Masonic Lodge.
      Ron passed away June 22, 2002.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
     
      A memorial service for MILDRED NICHOLS, 88, of Traverse City, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Friends may call at the time of the service.
      Mrs. Nichols passed away July 11, 2002.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
     
      JOHN R. THORESON, 86, of Port Noralunga, South Australia, and formerly of Glen Arbor, passed away July 12, 2002.
     
      W. JUNE WHITE, 78, of Williamsburg, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at her home.
      Visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the funeral home.
