Obituaries

BEAR LAKE - Eldred Roger Gilbert, 88, of Bear Lake, formerly of Thompsonville, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born May 26, 1914, in Arcadia, the son of Glen and Grace (Hopkins) Gilbert. As a young man, Eldred worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1935, at Camp Newberry in the Upper Peninsula. He was also employed for over 16 years with the Traverse City Light and Power Company, retiring in 1976.
      Eldred was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, and had a knack for fixing just about anything. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and was an avid snowmobiler, belonging to the Snowbirds Snowmobile Club in Thompsonville. He also enjoyed going to the lake and spending time at the cabin at Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior.
      Most of all, Eldred loved spending time with is family and friends, and especially enjoyed going to the family reunions.
      Eldred is survived by his wife, Florence Gilbert of Bear Lake; his four sons, David (Sandy) Gilbert of Traverse City, Eldred (Sandi) Gilbert of Bremen, Ind., Clyde (Lenna) Gilbert of Manistee, and Robert (Doris) Gilbert of Traverse City; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; his stepson, A.J. (Jackie) Johnson of Alexandria, Va.; four stepgrandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Lemley of Kalamazoo.
      Eldred was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Elaine Gilbert in 1998; and his brother, Elton Gilbert.
      Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Eric Struble officiating. Interment will be in the Blaine Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Baptist Church. Envelopes are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
     
      Died July 19, 2002
      INTERLOCHEN - Keith D. Baughman, 80, of Karlin, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Jan. 24, 1922, in Nessen City, he was the son of William and Margaret (Drotleff) Baughman. On Nov. 5, 1946, in Plymouth, he married the former Louise G. Peck. His loving care for her was inspiring to his family and friends.
      Mr. Baughman served his country honorably during World War II as a sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an aviation machinist with Bombing Squadron 611 in the Philippines and still kept in contact with the men in his unit. He was a member of the Copemish American Legion, Read-Osborne Post 531.
      After earning a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1950, he taught wood shop and welding at Plymouth High School. He led the boys track team to regional and state championships as their head coach for 17 years. His positive influence on so many young men's lives is a legacy which will live on beyond his years. After receiving a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1954, he kept his friendships with "the college crowd", a group of men who had studied together.
      He was always interested in life, enjoying fishing, reading about history and mysteries, collecting ancestral photographs and watching the birds and other wildlife that surrounded his home. He especially loved spending time with his child and grandchildren who will miss his gourmet molasses cookies and stories of the past.
      Keith is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise Baughman; his daughter, Linda Alderman of Traverse City; grandchildren, Marc Alderman and fiancé Dede Cronin of Interlochen, Lara (Jeff) Kelley of Vancouver, B.C.; stepgrandchildren, Shan (Todd) Bowens of Battle Creek, Maya (Jeff) Kassab of Traverse City, Chay (Holly) Gray of Grawn; stepgreat-grandchildren, Trent and Mknzie; brother, Robert Baughman of Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews.
      Mr. Baughman was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Donald Alderman in 1982, and daughter, Lisa Valerie Baughman in 1957.
      Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at The Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, July 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating.
      Following cremation, inurnment will be in Grant Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, or to the Salvation Army.
     
      DOELKER-WOCHHOLZ MEMORIAL planned. The family of Frederick Doelker and Daphne Wochholz Doelker will host a memorial service in their honor at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the First Congregational Church Chapel on Old Mission Peninsula.
     
      Memorial services for PATRICK "PAT" DOYLE, of Central Lake, who passed away Feb. 18, 2002, in Texas, will be held Saturday, July 27 at 1 p.m. Friends and family are asked to meet at the Doyle residence at 12:30 p.m. They will proceed to his hunting grounds and his ashes will be scattered in the woods that Pat so dearly loved.
     
      EDWARD MORRIS KRISE, 55, of Wellston, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
      A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, at the Oak Grove Cremation Center, with the Rev. Russ Garrigus officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center, 85, Cypress Street, in Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
     
      SALLY LOUISE TIEDEL, 63, of Ludington, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Tendercare of Ludington.
      Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center is in charge of funeral arrangements.
     
     
      BEAR LAKE - Richard E. "Smitty" Smith, 65, of Bear Lake, died Friday morning, July 19, 2002, at his home.
      He was born July 18, 1937, in Bear Lake, the son of the late Kenneth R. Smith and Mary Maude (Blood) Smith-Saul. He was a graduate of Bear Lake High School, the class of 1955. Smitty served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1959. He married Marlene Ada Frederickson on July 5, 1959, in Manistee. She preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 1967. Smitty then married Roberta "Robbie" Mae Renwick, and later married Margie Mellinger on April 20, 1991, at Boon Baptist Church.
      He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator for Packaging Corporation of America for 38 years, retiring in March of 1996. Smitty was a member of the Eden Bible Church in Beulah. An avid hunter and fisherman, Smitty was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
      He is survived by his wife, Margie Smith of Bear Lake; his children and their spouses, Douglas and Kay Smith of Calumet, Pamela and Bruce Jewett of Mesick, Rich and Sandy Smith of Ludington, Robbie and Brent Hansen of Fennville, and Betsy and Kit Williams of Ludington; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leslie and Pat Smith of Bear Lake, his twin, Raymond and Delores Smith of Traverse City; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou and Bill Hullinger of Muskegon, Evelyn and Gordon Bonney of Beulah, Judy and Robert Lyman of Kaleva, and Bonnie and Dennis Anderson of Clarksville, Tenn. Many nieces, nephews and a wonderful church family also survive.
      Smitty was also preceded in death by his nephew, Sonny Smith.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake.
      Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral services that will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, at the Eden Bible Church in Beulah, with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Manistee.
      A memorial fund will be established in Richard's name for the Eden Bible Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      The Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake is in charge of funeral arrangements.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Karen Lynn Solem, born July 30, 1956, loving daughter of Lee and Genyth Solem, passed away Friday.
      Karen is the mother and friend of son, Gary Lee Solem, sister to Marsha L. Bunch, Ron and Donna Kay Hollister, Margaret Diane Brookshire, and Sandra Baranek; and is also survived by nieces, nephews and other family members.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St., Traverse City, MI 49684.
