Obituaries

SUTTONS BAY - Harry H. Boston McSauby, 74, of Suttons Bay, died peacefully Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, following complications due to cancer.
      He was born May 26, 1928, in East Jordan, to the late Jonas and Jeanette (Oliver) McSauby. Harry was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He graduated from Northport High School in 1948. He married Lucille Lewis in October of 1946, in Northport. Together they moved to Grand Rapids where Harry worked and resided for 40 years. Following his retirement, Harry and Lucille moved to Traverse City and later to Suttons Bay.
      Harry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lucille; their three daughters, Roxanne (Dave) Selby of Grawn, Kimberly (Vic) Goddard of Hastings, and Loretta (William) Selby of Dallas, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Juanita Yohe of New York; and several nieces and nephews.
      Along with his parents, Harry was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver McSauby and Julius Ance, and three sisters, Leota Lockniet, Ethel McSauby and Emeline Wright.
      Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.
      Visitation will continue at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, at Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church where the funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Andrew G. Buvala will officiate. Burial will be in East Jordan.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ernest "Wade" McCutchan, 91, of Traverse City, died Friday at his home at Traverse Manor.
      Born Aug. 29, 1910, in Borden, Ind., he was the son of the late James Clarence and Lealah Maude (Wade) McCutchan. On Dec. 24, 1938, in Indiana, he married the former Georgia Catherine Compton, who preceded him in death in 1989.
      Mr. McCutchan was a resident of Traverse City since 1993, coming from Sheridan, Ind. He was a retired supervisor for the Allison Division of General Motors Corporation in Indianapolis, Ind. He also enjoyed farming. Mr. McCutchan was a member of Arcadia Christian Church in Arcadia, Ind. and had attended the Bible Baptist Church in Traverse City. He was affiliated with Gideons International and was a member of the Masons.
      Survivors include his daughter, Alice J. (Dr. Stephen) Beeker of Traverse City; sister, Mildred Hoke of Hoover, Ala.; brothers, Robert (Ione) McCutchan of Watseka, Ill., Irvin (Fern) McCutchan of Monticello, Ind., Alvin (Lynn) McCutchan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Gail (Randy) Folsom of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Julie (Lalu Wirayani) Beeker of Traverse City, and Bruce Stephen Beeker of Traverse City; four great-grandchildren, Evan Wade and Davis Grant Folsom and Yani Stephen and Yana Rose Beeker; and a special sister-in-law, Laura Alice Baker of New Albany, Ind.
      He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Condra; and brothers, Haven, Garven, Olin, Gerald, N. Clifton and Stanley O. McCutchan.
      Services will be held at Chapel Hill Christian Church in Borden, Ind. on Monday, June 3, at 11 a.m. where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Borden, Ind.
      Memorials may be directed to Chapel Hill Christian Church.

      TRAVERSE CITY - A.D. "Abie" Cowie, 91, of Traverse City, died Friday morning at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Mar. 31, 1911, in Lakewood, Ohio, he was the son of the late Andrew B. and Annie M. (Walker) Cowie. On July 3, 1937, in Traverse City, he married the former Catherine Hobbs, who preceded him in death.
      Mr. Cowie had been employed by U.S. Steel as a wheelsman, retiring in 1972. Together with his wife, Catherine, they owned and operated Twin Oaks Resort on Silver Lake for 20 years. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Worthington, Ohio, for over 65 years. A.D. enjoyed traveling and often sailed on the Great Lakes.
      Survivors include his daughter, Catherine Anne (Alfred J.) Kuhn of Hammond, Ind.; son, William A. Cowie of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
      He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Audrey E. Cowie, Elva B. Cowie and Violet Tribby; and brothers, Walter Cowie and Win R. Cowie.
      Cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 2 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.

      RALPH J. CURTIS, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday afternoon, May 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.

      OMENA - Richard Clark Taylor, 76, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at his home on Ingalls Bay, surrounded by his loving family.
      Born March 18, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., Richard was the son of the late Hazel (Clark) Taylor and Edward Harrison Taylor, Ph.D. Richard received his bachelor's degree from Haverford College in 1949, after serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Swift & Company as a labor relations manager, first in Peabody, Mass., and then accepted assignments in New Jersey, Chicago, and Omaha, Neb.
      He had a passion for any kind of fishing from surf casting in the Atlantic to trolling in Lake Michigan. Though not his vocation, he was a talented carpenter who extensively renovated or built each home he owned. With a fine tenor voice he enjoyed singing in the church choir, and entertaining family and friends.
      Richard's greatest gift to his children was to instill love and excitement and to share the magic of this place called Omena. As a problem-solver and a risk-taker, his children learned through his example to believe in their dreams and to seek strength within themselves.
      In his retirement, with his devoted wife, Marie, they built their present home on Ingalls Bay. They lived an energetic lifestyle, entertaining family throughout the summer and traveling to Europe, the West Coast and Florida in the winter.
      Along with his wife, Marie, Richard is survived by his sons, Philip C. Taylor, M.D. of Wayne, Pa., David and John Call of Florida, Richard Call of Germany, and Neil and Donald Call of Massachusetts, and his daughters, Linda (Clark Taylor) Kettenring of Concord, N.H., Marie Nelson and Cynthia Gilchrist of Massachusetts, and Donna Ronayne of Manasquan, N.J.; his sister, Patricia A. Kulick of Ocean Springs, Miss.; 22 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau, with the Rev. Jerry Hunko. Burial will be in Omena Hillcrest Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Munson Healthcare Foundation-Oncology Unit, 1105 6th St., Traverse City, MI 49684, in memory of Richard Taylor.
