Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph Richard Nowaczyk, 66, of Traverse City, died Friday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 3, 1936, in Freeland, he was the son of Edmund and Frances (Velant) Nowaczyk. He married the former Mary Thompson, who preceded him in death on Aug. 14, 1988. In Sept. of 1995, in Traverse City, he married the former Penny Cunningham Brownell, who survives.
      Joe had been employed in construction and maintenance and enjoyed fishing and bowling, but the light of his life was his grandchildren.
      In addition to his wife, Penny, other survivors include his son, David (Diane) Nowaczyk of Saginaw, and daughter, Lori (Rob) Minnis of Traverse City, and his stepchildren, Daren Brownell (Maggie Potes) of Traverse City, and Tricia (Christopher) Kirkish of Houghton; five grandchildren, Karlee and Jenna Nowaczyk, Madison Minnis and his stepgrandchildren, Joshua and Tonya; his stepfather, John Wiggins; his mother and father-in-law, Paul and Ellen Cunningham of Traverse City; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Faye Cunningham, and Linda and Leon Schworm, all of Traverse City, and Rita and Brad Foltman of Boise, Idaho. Joe is also survived by his very special friends with whom he worked.
      In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Stan.
      Services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Jerry Micketti officiating. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today and continue until the time of the service. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Saginaw.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army, to St. Patrick Catholic Church, or to the First Christian Church.
     
      ELK RAPIDS - Genevieve Elizabeth Ringler, 88, of Elk Rapids, died Friday, June 7, 2002.
      She was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Bellaire, the daughter of the late, George Curtis and Arbie Marie (Boucher) Hilton. On May 30, 1940, she married Ford Ringler.
      Genevieve was a teacher with the Bellaire School System. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in the Alter Society. She enjoyed bowling, sewing and embroidery. She was also a member of the Meadow Brook Auxiliary.
      She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends. She will lovingly missed by all.
      Along with her parents, Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Ringler; and her sister, Bernice.
      Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, where Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski as celebrant. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - Cindy Kay Lanschwager, 45, of Waynesville, N.C., passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002.
      She was born Jan. 9, 1957, in Saginaw, to John H. and Geraldine E. (Schultz) Langschwager. Cindy was a graduate of Douglas McArthur High School in Saginaw, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, International Scholastic Order. Cindy attended both Ferris State University and Haywood Community College where she received her phlebotomy certificate.
      She loved writing poetry, gardening and her cats. Cindy also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, traveling and listening to classical music.
      Cindy is survived by her parents, John and Geraldine Langschwager of Suttons Bay; her son, Robert Dana Higgins III; sisters, Christine Langschwager of Traverse City, and Carla (Larry) Linvill of Traverse City; her niece, Leslie Linvill and nephew, Stuart Linvill; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
      She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
      A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay, with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan as celebrant.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Women's Cancer Fund or to Mass Intentions.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Jeanne Hitchens, 77, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 7, 2002.
      Mary was born March 19, 1925, in Detroit, to the late Arthur and Gertrude (Faber) Hitchens Sr.
      She retired from the Detroit office of the Internal Revenue Service. Mary enjoyed traveling and was able to visit destinations throughout the world.
      Mary is survived by four sisters, Margaret Rose of Algonac, Gertrude Kerbrat of St. Clair, Phyllis Socia of St. Clair Shores, and Nancy (James) Brennan of Crystal Lake, Ill.; her brother, J. Daniel (Jessie) Hitchens of Traverse City; her sister-in-law, Rose Marie Hitchens of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      Along with her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathlen Steffes and Helen Carrico; and two brothers, Arthur "Bud" Hitchens Jr. and Charles Hitchens Sr.
      Visitation will be held at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Father James Gardiner as celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      ELK RAPIDS - Robert "Bob" Lee Schaefer, 76, died at his home in Elk Rapids, May 18, 2002.
      He was the only child of Theodore and Clarice (Wilson) Schaefer Murphy. Both of his parents and his stepfather preceded him in death.
      Bob graduated from high school in Detroit and went directly into military service. He served in France as a U.S. Army medical corpsman and was awarded the Bronze Star. Following his military service, he attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. Bob never married.
      Bob came to Traverse City in the early 1950s and then moved to Elk Rapids about 1980. He was self-employed in the care of homes.
      Cremation will be followed by inurnment with his parents in the Romeo Cemetery.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Edward L. Wheeler, 92, of Traverse City, died Thursday evening at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Ed was born Jan. 16, 1910, in Harbor Springs, the son of George E. and Mary Ann (Smith) Wheeler. On Oct. 16, 1935, he married Lucille E. Luebbers in St. Libory, Ill., and she preceded him in death in 1997.
      Ed was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He had been employed by Shedd Bartush Food Sales Company as a sales Representative, retiring in 1975, and was later employed by Tri-Gas for 10 years.
      Ed is survived by his children, David L. (Martha) Wheeler of Chesapeake, Va., and Mary Ann (Larry) Dunbar of Elk Rapids. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Scott and Michael Dunbar, David, Andy and Melanie Wheeler and Julia O'Neal; two great-grandchildren; Ed's sister, Gertrude Hewitt of Portage; and his nephew, George Hewitt of Kalamazoo.
      In addition to his wife, Lucille, Ed was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.
      The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Father James Hayden serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      For those desiring to make a memorial contribution in Ed's memory, the family would suggest the Father Fred Foundation.
     
      PEARL V. APPELDOORN, 87, of Leland, died Saturday morning, June 8, 2002.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
      Arrangements were entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      ALONZO L. JAMISON, 83, of Kalkaska, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care.
      No visitation or services are planned. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

      Services for GRACE SLOCUM will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, at the First Congregational Church.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      GEORGIA B. SNELL, 100, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Graveside services at the Thompsonville Cemetery will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 10, with the Rev. Richard C. Stoddard officiating.
