March 3, 2002ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Loretta Arnyth Ward, 89, of Traverse City, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002.Loretta was born Aug. 9, 1912, in Traverse City, the daughter of Ransom Joseph and Ida Belle (Taylor) Baker. In 1933, she married Gerald Donald Ward in Traverse City. Loretta was a nurses aid and was employed at Munson Hospital from 1936 until 1939. She then became the office nurse for Dr. Irwin H. Zielke until she retired in 1975. Loretta was president of the United Church Women, president of the Grawn United Methodist Church Women's Society and was very active in the church for many years. She is survived by her two daughters, Ida Marie (David) Bergsma of Brighton, and Sue Ann Ward of Traverse City; her beloved nephews, Terry Robinson of Traverse City, and Gordon (Jennifer) Robinson of Buckley; her beloved niece, Brenda (Ron) Linstrom of Muskegon; her grandchildren, Nicole (Jeff) Charder, Jennifer (Jeff) Gross, Sheila (Lee) Haish, and Shellie (Alec) Beeman; her great-grandchildren, Josh and Justin Haish, Jessica and Corbin Charder, Haileigh Gross, and Autumn and Amber Beeman; her sister, Jane Yonkman of Muskegon; and many other family members that were dear to her heart. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Ward; four sisters, Lena, Marion, Flora, and Bernice; her twin brother Loren, and another brother, John. A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, at the Grawn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Biteman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army, or to the Grawn United Methodist Church. Arrangements were entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. BELLAIRE - Margaret E. Swaney, 88, of Bellaire, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Margaret was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Portland, Ore., the daughter of Warren and Manerva Jewett. In 1915, the family moved to Pulaski in Jackson County. Following that, she resided in Coldwater. While residing in Pulaski, she was employed by the Hillsdale Pants Factory. She moved to Bellaire in 1949. Margaret enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting. In 1934, in Hillsdale, she married Lloyd Swaney, who preceded her in death in 1970. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Lawrence and Leon Jewett, two sisters, Betty Clark and Helen Munson; a grandson, Harold Barber; and her parents. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Marlene Barber of Central Lake; her three sons, Don and Roy Swaney, both of Bellaire, and Bob (Arlene) Swaney of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are two sisters, Barb Segraves and Maebelle Sawyer both of Shreveport, La.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 20 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Estel Clark officiating. Interment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire. Smith, 85, of Charlevoix, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her son's home in Traverse City. Wilma is survived by her children, Dwight W. (Judy) Smith of Bellaire, Barbara E. Smith of Charlevoix, and Joseph D. (Debra) Smith of Traverse City; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sister, Adaline (George) Wollam of Traverse City. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlevoix County Hospice, or to the charity of the donor's choice. VERO BEACH, Fla. - Shirley Nelson Kuehn, 73, of Vero Beach, Fla., passed away at her home following a long illness. She was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Traverse City, the daughter of Arthur and Fayma (Wagner) Nelson. Shirley graduated from Traverse City High School in 1946. Shirley is survived by her two sons, Kurt Kuehn, and Rick (Lori) Kuehn; her brother, Raymond Nelson of Costa Rica; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Tom, and her sister, Gwendolyn. GRAND RAPIDS - Iris Catherine Champion Bourdo, 95, of Grand Rapids, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. Iris was born Aug. 22, 1906, in Dayton, Ohio. Iris is survived by her son Kenneth (Lisa) Champion of Eugene, Ore., and her two daughters, Beverly (Kenneth) VanderVeen of Akron, Ohio, and Diana (Robert) Leipprandt of Williamsburg; 10 grandchildren, Belinda Villanueva, John Champion, Sara Neumann, Mark and Craig VanderVeen, Kerrie Smith, Jeffrey, Douglas and Bradley Leipprandt, and Lee Ann Hutchinson; 13 great-grandchildren; her stepson, Barry (Barbara) Bourdo; and her three stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John C. Champion of Grand Rapids, and Julius R. Bourdo of Northport; and by her grandson, Kevin VanderVeen. A memorial service is pending. "Ernie" Arnold, 52 of Lake Ann, passed away Friday at Munson Medical Center. Born Aug. 28, 1949, in Reed City, he was the son of Leonard Warren and Esther Mae (Courtright) Arnold. On Aug. 15, 1969 in Traverse City, he married the former Diana Snyder who survives. Ernie retired in 2000 after 30 years of employment with the City of Traverse City. He is a member of the Almira Township Volunteer Fire Department and is a member of the NW Fire Fighters Association. An avid outdoorsman, Ernie enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, who especially enjoyed being with his family. Other survivors include his children, Melissa "Misi" (Shannon) Baker of Manton, Kimberly "Kym" (Todd) Wisniewski of Traverse City; grandchildren, Kenneth Wheelock, Iesha and Kelsea Robinson and T.J., Chantel, Corbin and Clayton Wisniewski; his brother, Ed (Marilynn) Arnold of Traverse City; his uncle, Walt (Bea) Wares; his closest friend, Jim Morse Jr.; his special buddy, Scruffy; and many cousins. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City today from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Monday, March 4 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jim Roe and Pastor Mike Dunckley will be officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the Almira Township Volunteer Fire Department. JOYCE M. BAUER, 76, of Williamsburg, died Friday, March 1, 2002 at Munson Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 4 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at the funeral home. A complete obituary will appear in Monday's Record-Eagle. VICTORIA BYCZKOWSKI, 88, of Traverse City, died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Bortz Health Care. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 4 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. ROBERT G. ROBINSON, 76, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at Munson Medical Center. SIKORSKI, 52, of Great Falls, Mont., and formerly of Interlochen, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at his home in Great Falls. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the services at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. EDITH M. WOZNIAK, 98, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Thursday. |
