Obituaries

CHELSEA - Edith Dorothy Blackhurst, 100, of Mayfield and Chelsea, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002, in Chelsea.
      Edith was born Feb. 7, 1902, in Mayfield, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (Koch) Halladay. Edith married Roswell James Blackhurst in Kingsley on Aug. 19, 1924.
      Edith attended Michigan Normal College, received her Life Certificate, and taught for 37 years in the Traverse City and Flint areas. She retired from Cherry Knoll School in 1967 and helped start a Head Start Day Care Center in Traverse City. In recent years, she spent her summers at her Mayfield home and her winters in her Chelsea apartment. She was a life member of the National Education Association, Order of the Eastern Star for the Manton-Buckley area, #189, and the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Queen City Shrine #16.
      Her friends and family will sorely miss her.
      Edith is survived by her daughter, Martha Kay (John Robert) Hicks of Ann Arbor; nieces and nephews, Jeanie McCoy, Kenneth and Jerry Wyckoff, Gretchen Maren, John Falk, Chuck Chowning, Elsie Ehman, Jan Gordon, Sue Sheffer, Mary Halladay, Jim and Chuck Blackhurst, Nancy Neal, and Janice Payne; as well as many great-great, and great-great-great nephews and nieces.
      Edith was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Roswell James Blackhurst Jr. in 1945; and her husband, Roswell James Blackhurst Sr. in 1953.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. A service will be performed by the Order of the Eastern Star of Manton-Buckley, #189 at 7 p.m.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Glen Walters officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. A memorial service will be held at the Chelsea Retirement Center in the spring also. The date and time for that service will be announced at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mayfield Chapel, or to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy for the development of the Halladay, Blackhurst, Chowning Nature Preserve on Voice Road.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      GRAYLING - Basil Hubbell, 79, of Grayling, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002.
      Basil was born May 25, 1922, in Allen, to Clyde and Teresa (Bennett) Hubbell. In World War II, Basil served with the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, Basil went to work for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and was employed at the Grayling Fish Hatchery, where he retired after almost 30 years of service.
      Basil was an avid and very successful hunter and fisherman. Until his illness, he attended and was a member of the Roscommon Congregational Church, the Grayling American Legion Post, and the Grayling AuSable Swingers and Houghton Lake Ripples and Waves Square Dance Clubs. His family operated a canoe livery in Roscommon for 17 years.
      Basil is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Peter) Wertanen of Negaunee and Laurie Miller of Traverse City; his son, Brian Hubbell of Traverse City; and two granddaughters, Marlene (John) Koch of Menomonie, Wis., and Linda Selesky of Negaunee. Basil is also survived by his former wife of 32 years, Nancy Wyckoff of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, Esther Wilmer and Katherine Delaney; and his two brothers, Arnold and William Hubbell.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, with the Rev. Joseph Carpenter officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the services at 1 p.m.
     
      ESTHER STINER, 93, of Traverse City, died early Thursday morning, March 7, 2002, in Traverse City.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      Rapid City - Dale H. Pendock, 71, of Rapid City, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002, at his home.
      Dale was born April 6, 1930, in Bellaire, the son of Chester Arthur and Maude (Updike) Pendock. Dale had been a resident of Rapid City since 1976, moving from Bellaire. He truly had a love of horses.
      Dale is survived by his children, Terry Pendock of Kingsley, Sally Clous of Lake Ann, Dean Pendock of East Jordan, Doyle Pendock of Rapid City, Bruce Pendock and Colleen Coleman of Polk City, Fla.; his sister, Rosemary Dawson of Midland; and many nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The family will receive friends and relatives two hours prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire.
      Memorial contributions may be made in behalf of Dale Pendock to the Kalkaska County Area Agency on Aging.
