TRAVERSE CITY - Muriel Janyce Pratt, 72, of Palm City, Fla. and Traverse City, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in St. Louis, Mo.
      She was the beloved wife of the late B. Christopher Pratt; dear mother of Marcia (Tony) Pandjiris of St. Louis, Mo., Richard (Vicki) Pratt of St. Louis, Mo., B. Christopher (Judy) Pratt, Jr. of Traverse City and Anthony (Annette) Pratt of Gibsonia, Pa.; loving grandmother of Tony, Amy, Heather, Richard, Lauren, Andrea, Sarah, Elisabeth, Taylor, Benjamin and Emily.
      A private family service will be held Monday, March 11, in Traverse City with the Rev. Dean Bailey officiating. Burial will take place in Linwood Cemetery, Long Lake Township.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., Traverse City, MI 49684.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Jay Willard Spaulding Jr., 82, of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002, with his family by his side, and listening to Big Band music.
      Jay had lived in Zephyrhills for 10 years, moving there from Northport. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post #35 in Traverse City.
      Jay was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia D. Spaulding.
      He is survived by his wife, Jean of Zephyrhills, Fla.; his two sons, Jay (Lorrene) of West Branch, and James (Liz) Ranney of St. Cloud, Fla.; his two daughters, Patricia M. (James) Jorgensen of Northport, and Carol (Dave) Glaza of Leesburg, Fla.; his sister, Phyllis Nelson of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Oakley Funeral Home in Zephyrhills, Fla.
     
      WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. - Robert B. "B.J." Paxton, 80, of Winter Springs, Fla., passed away Friday, March 8, 2002.
      B.J. was born in Dayton, Ohio. He was a member of the Rotary Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Leesburg, Fla. B.J. retired from the National Cash Register Company as a sales manager. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp.
      B.J. is survived by his wife, Marion G. Paxton of Winter Springs, Fla.; his two sons, Robert N. Paxton of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Stephen E. Paxton of Ludington; his two daughters, Mary Lou Allen of Winter Springs, Fla., and Ann E. Schuknecht of Antioch, Calif.; his brother, Park D. Paxton of Alpharetta, Ga.; his 10 grandchildren; and his three great-grandchildren.

      GUN LAKE - Philip Jerome McKiernan Jr., 58, of Gun Lake, passed away suddenly Wednesday, March 6, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
      Philip was born July 10, 1943, in Holyoke, Mass., the son of Philip and Claire McKiernan. He grew up and attended schools in Lansing. Phil built a long career in computer information systems and was currently the director of management information services in the Kentwood Public School District. He also held positions at Michigan National Bank, Diamond Reo, E.W. Bliss, Chef Pierre Corporation, SPX and LG Cook.
      Phil was active in many professional organizations over the years. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved cars and will be sadly missed by his many friends in the Grand Valley Corvette Club, where he currently served as treasurer. He enjoyed boating, golf, and other outdoor activities and spending time with his grandkids. He had many "projects" and could always find a reason to have a new tool.
      Phil is survived by his wife, Mary (Kavanagh) McKiernan of Gun Lake; his son, Philip (Lisa) McKiernan III of Appleton, Wis., his daughter, Suzanne (Mark) Crabtree of Kentwood; his stepson, James (Angela) Myers of North Glenn, Colo.; his stepdaughter, Catherine (Prentice) Cole of Milford; his grandchildren, Katie and Corrie McKiernan, Casey and Jacob Crabtree, and Megan Cole; his father, Philip McKiernan Sr. of Holland; his brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence J. (Theodora F.) McKiernan of Holland; and long time friends, Richard and Karleen Root of Kentwood.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Claire.
      Members of the family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, (616)455-1535.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 11, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9669, Kraft SE, with the Rev. Father David E. LeBlanc as celebrant.
      The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Spina Bifida Association, or to Mercy Respite.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Our loving mother and grandmother was welcomed by her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, after a brief illness.
      Clara was born in Jackson, the daughter of Charles and Mabel Sayles and she married G. Robert McCain in 1948.
      Clara and her husband lived in Jackson, where she raised her family, was an active member of Junior Dorcas (a service organization), and the First Methodist Church. In 1984, they moved to their summer home in Topinabee on Mullett Lake, where she was a longtime member of the Topinabee Community Church. Clara spent her time as a volunteer for the Cheboygan Literacy Council, teaching adults to read, and was a strong supporter of Mullett Area Preservation Society (MAPS). Clara's sense of humor and energy will be sadly missed by her friends at Cherry Hill Haven in Traverse City, where she resided the last four months.
      She is survived by her son, Charles (Betsy) McCain of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Emily of Los Angeles, Calif., Katy of Traverse City, Christian and Anna of Hood River, Ore.; and her little dog, Melody.
      Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; her sister, Mary; and her son, Christopher.
      Cremation has taken place.
      Memorial services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 16, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. David Gabel and the Rev. Dan Millward officiating.
      Memorial contributions in Clara's memory may be directed to the Topinabee Community Church, Topinabee, MI 49791, or to the Cherryland Humane Society in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      INLAND TOWNSHIP - Fred W. Marsh Sr., 91, of Inland Township, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Fred was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Green Lake Township, the son of Willard and Myra (Ingleright) Marsh.
      Fred had worked for the Benzie County Road Commission for 30 years, when he retired 30 years ago. He was a life member of the Community of Christ Church, Inland, which was also known as R.L.D.S. Church, and had served as an elder there for most of his adult life. Fred enjoyed camping, playing shuffleboard, and playing cards.
      On Nov. 23, 1930, in Bendon, Fred married Etha Bessie Clow, who survives him. He is also survived by their four children, Fred W. Marsh Jr. of Grawn, Alice V. (Thomas) McIntire of Marshalltown, Iowa, Wardell W. (Lori Ewing) Marsh of Madison Ala., and Carol J. (Carl) Wiggins of Beulah; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
      Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harold and Robert Marsh; and his daughter-in-law, Phyllis Marsh.
      Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
      Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the funeral home, with Mr. Michael Mead officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Community of Christ Church of Inland, or to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.
     
      ST. JOSEPH - Simon Dean Kohler, infant son of Matthew and Stephanie Kohler, was stillborn at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002.
      Simon is survived by his parents, Matthew and Stephanie (Watkins) Kohler of Stevensville; two brothers, Jacob and Noah at home; grandparents, Nancy and Leo Spitzke of Eau Claire, Tom and Amy Kohler of Northport, and Don Watkins of Berrien Springs.
      Private family services will be held at a later date.
      The family is being serviced by Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home in St. Joseph.
     
      STAR L. DUDAS, 64, of Traverse City, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at her home.
      Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      SVEN H. LILJESTRAND, 79, of Suttons Bay, and formerly of Cedar, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 11, from Maple City Community Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. The Rev. William E. Mills will be officiating.

      PAUL RICHARD RICHTER, 68, of Brethren, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at his residence.
      Graveside memorial services will be held in the spring at Brethren Cemetery.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      ERNESTINE M. WOODROW, 79, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2002.
      Cremation has taken place and pursuant to Ernetine's wishes, there will be no services.
