Obituaries

BENZONIA - Raymond Eugene Peck, 79, of Benzonia, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, suddenly at his residence.
      Ray was born Feb. 18, 1923, in St. John's, the son of Earl and Naoma (Rice) Peck. While serving in the Navy during World War II, Ray married the former Hilda Jean Probst on Oct. 23, 1944, in Miami, Fla.
      Ray and his family resided in St. John's until 1968, when they purchased Rosier's Motel in Benzonia. He later opened Ray's Bait & Tackle. Being an avid fisherman, Ray enjoyed operating the bait shop with his son, Terry and Terry's wife, Joan. He was also a great fan of the drag racing in which his sons, Mike and Terry participated.
      Ray is survived by his sons, Michael Ray Peck, and Terry Lee (Joan E.) Peck, all of Benzonia; his seven grandchildren, Kimberly LaFountain, Timothy Peck, Shannon Dunlop, Bobbiann and Andy Jaworski, Thomas, Robert (Charlie), and Raymond Joseph "R.J." Peck; his 12 great-grandchildren, Ben, Jordan, MyKaila Jo, Levi, Timmy, Shelby, James, Mackenzie, Brianna-Rai, Christopher, Kyle, and Hanna; his brother, Larry (Jo) Peck of Nevada; and his sisters, Betty Creaser of North Carolina, and Virginia (Charles) Probst of Lansing.
      Ray was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Hilda; and his son, Timothy.
      Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Boehm officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. John's at a later date.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Raymond E. Peck Memorial Fund.

      LELAND - Virginia Walker Mitchell, 87, of Leland, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Cherry Hill Haven Home in Traverse City.
      Virginia was born Dec. 12, 1914, in Walkerville, Ontario, the daughter of Harrington E. and Helen C. (Macfie) Walker. She married Frank M. Mitchell in Grosse Pointe, Feb. 22, 1936. Frank preceded her in death in October 1959. They were blessed with two children. Virginia served as a volunteer for the Red Cross during World War II.
      Virginia married LaFrance A. Mitchell in Leland on Aug. 7, 1969. LaFrance preceded her in death in June 1993. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society for 20 years, and was a former vice president of the Michigan Division. She was also a member of the Little Garden Club of Leland, and served as a former president of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. Virginia was a member of the Leland Community United Methodist Church.
      Virginia is survived by her two children, her son, Donald W. (Sandy) Mitchell of East Leland, and her daughter, Ellen M. (Fr. James) McLean of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; her four grandchildren, Randy (Helen) Becker, Libby (David) French, Jesse Mitchell, and Cory Mitchell; her five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Franklin M. Walker of Naples, Fla.
      Virginia was also preceded in death by her sister, Florence Buell.
      A memorial service will be held in the spring.
      In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to any of the community charities listed above.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Regina C. Depka, 90, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center.
      She was born Feb. 25, 1912, in Cedar, the daughter of Joseph and Cecilia (Fleis) Panek. Regina had lived in this area her entire life.
      She was married to Sylvester (Tony) Depka who preceded her in death in 1975.
      Regina had worked with her husband in the construction business, was a homemaker, and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She also had been a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling with family and friends.
      She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (James) Kratky of Traverse City, and Theresa (Roger) Komrska of Kankakee, Ill.; her grandchildren, Kathy (Traver) Teboe, James W. (Karen) Kratky and Steven Kratky, all of Traverse City, Julie (Jason) Schmidt of St. Joseph, Dean (Sharon) Komrska of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Gary (Melissa) Komrska of Kentwood, and David Komrska of Royal Oak; and her 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Leo Panek of Traverse City, Julian Panek and Roman (Lillian) Panek, both of Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; her sisters, Sophia, Clara, Genevieve, and Veronica; also, her brothers Adam, Vencil, John and Steve Panek.
      The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father James Hayden celebrating the Mass.
      Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
     
      RUBY ALMA, 82, of Frederic, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at her home.
      Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at the First Baptist Church of Frederic. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Arrangements by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling.
     
      ROBERT ZAN ARQUILLA, 41, of Dickson Township, formerly of Traverse City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at his residence.
      Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life service at a later date.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      ROSE MARY CANTRELL, 69, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Friday, March 15, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
