March 20, 2002Obituaries**PHOTO** Robert L. "Bob" TonderDied March 18, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Robert L. "Bob" Tonder, 50, of Traverse City, died Monday at home, after a strong fight against cancer. Born March 17, 1952, in Crookston, Minn., he was the son of Purl Ogden and Luverna Florence (Griese) Tonder. On Jan. 25, 1974, in Bismarck, N.D., he married the former Patricia Ann Schepper. Bob has been employed as the Vocational Rehabilitation Director for the G.T.P. for 17 years. His varied interests and hobbies included hunting, camping, canoeing, backpacking and building model airplanes. Bob was an avid history buff and was considered a "jack-of-all-trades." He had a strong belief in family values and will be fondly remembered as a caring and loving husband and father. Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. "Patti" Tonder of Traverse City; children, Ryan J. Tonder of Seattle, Wash., Michael S. Tonder and Sara N. Tonder, both at home; his mother, Luverna Tonder of Traverse City; three brothers, Paul Tonder of Frisco City, Ala., LeRoy Tonder of Boise, Idaho, and Richard Tonder of Grand Forks, N.D.; mother and father-in-law, Ruby and Mike Schepper of Bismarck, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his father. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday, March 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, or G.T.P. Envelopes will be provided at the church and funeral home. LEWIS BROOKE JR., 64, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, March 18, 2002, at his home. A full obituary will appear in the Thursday edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. WILLIAM F. CURTIS, 79 of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until the services at the funeral home. ROBERT G. GOTTSCHALK, 76, of Honor, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Platte Township Cemetery. An open house celebrating the life of RICK HOLTCAMP, who died March 9, 2002, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the clubhouse at Harbour Ridge Apartments, 3686 Matador West, in Traverse City. MAXINE LOUISE SCHIMKE, 79, of Bear Lake, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility in Manistee. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Onekama, with the Rev. Paul Pollatz officiating. Interment will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery. AUDREY PAYER HUDDLESON WOLF, 76, a long-time resident of Traverse City, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside, Calif. Services will take place in Oceanside, Calif., with arrangements being handled by Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, (760) 726-2555. **PHOTO** Bernard "Buzz" Phillips Died March 14, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Bernard "Buzz" Phillips, 62, of Traverse City, and formerly of Midland, died Thursday, March 14, 2002. Buzz was born in Clare on Sept. 15, 1939, the son of Kenneth and Gladys (Johnston) Phillips. He married the former Kathleen Bozer in Midland on Aug. 7, 1971. Buzz had many occupations including working as a bartender and a truck driver. He was an avid sports fan, and was a volunteer with hockey and softball sporting events in Midland and with St. Francis High School sports here in Traverse City. Buzz is survived by his wife, Kathy; his son, Donald (Christine); his daughters, Sheila Hoffman, and Carol (Tom) Lumbert; and his seven grandchildren. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Gladys Tesman, and his father, Kenneth Phillips; and his brother, Mark. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Pine Grove Church of God, 790 Indian Trail Blvd., Traverse City, with the Rev. Marc Hoard officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. **PHOTO** Mildred Frances Barr Died March 18, 2002 LANSING - Mildred Frances Barr, 95, of Lansing and formerly of East Lansing, died Monday, March 18, 2002. Mildred was born Sept. 20, 1906, in Lansing, the daughter of Charles H. and Letta Belle Davis. She had been a resident of Lansing since 1906, and a summer resident of Interlochen since 1946. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Northwestern University in 1927, and a bachelor of science degree in library science from the University of Michigan in 1928. Mildred was employed as a librarian at Eastern High School before her marriage to Charles W. Barr in 1933. Mildred was an active member of the community, where she served as president of many service organizations including the East Lansing Junior Child Study Club and the East Lansing Alumnae Panhellenic. She was the founder and organizer of Beta Phi, which is the local chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, was awarded the Honor Ring of ZTA, served as National Chairman of Mothers' Club (1968), and was also awarded the Order of the Shield (2001), given for 75 years of membership. Mildred was the founder of the Play Ladies Auxiliary of the Michigan School for the Blind, an honorary member of Edward W. Sparrow Hospital Auxiliary, and a life member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She established the first American Indian Scholarship at Michigan State University as Chairman of the American Indian Committee of the DAR. Mildred was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lansing, where she had taught Sunday school for 15 years, served as secretary for the Board of Trustees, was a deacon, and past president of the Mayflower Circle. She was also an associated member of the Congregational Church of Mt. Dora, Fla. Mildred sponsored many children from the Pearl Buck Foundation and received wonderful letters and pictures from the recipients. This was just one example of her generosity to others. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Davis in 1911; and by her husband, Charles W. Barr in 2000. Mildred is survived by her son, Charles W. Barr II of East Lansing; her daughter, Marilyn (Alfonce) Leppek of Okemos; her granddaughters, Jan Marie (Dennis) Cox of Lansing, and Deborah Kay (Daniel) Dean of Seattle, Wash.; goddaughter, Barbara Soper of East Lansing; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel in East Lansing. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Patrick Shelly and the Rev. Penny Swartz officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, (517) 337-9745. **PHOTO** **FLAG** John Clark VanConant Died March 16, 2002 ELK RAPIDS - John Clark VanConant, 53, was born in Michigan on June 20, 1948, and died March 16, 2002, at his home in Elk Rapids after a valiant battle against brain cancer. John was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. M.C. and Mary Jean (Morrison) VanConant, long time residents of Imlay City and Elk Rapids. John is survived by his wife, Ronda, and his beloved daughters, Monica and Cassandra of Colorado Springs, Colo.; by his only son, Jason of Kauai, Hawaii; by his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sherry VanConant of Jackson; and his nieces, Jennifer and Jill of Kalamazoo; his sister, Janet J. Foster of Elk Rapids; and his nephew, Dr. James D.R. Foster of Del Mar, Calif. John was raised in Imlay City. As a young man of 19, John proudly, honorably and bravely served his country as a soldier in the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He returned home and attended Oakland Community College and then Michigan State University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree and then a master's degree in business administration. John's career in business was centered primarily in the high technology area where he worked as a sales and marketing executive in the computer services and computer chip businesses with Texas Instruments in Austin, Texas; Honeywell, Ramtron International and Enhanced Memory Systems in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and in the Silicon Valley in California. He was engaged in the presentation, application, marketing and delivery of innovative technology products nationally and internationally. John actively supported charity benefits for multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Toys for Tots, and he donated time to teaching and adult education. John was an active outdoorsman, skier, scuba diver and motorcycle enthusiast with a laid-back, free-spirited style, a keen, subtle sense of humor and a kind and loyal heart. His friends around the world and his family at home will miss him and hold close the memory of his intelligence, his optimism and his indomitable courage. He never lost hope that the future would be in a better place, nor shall we. Funeral arrangements are through the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. Donations, in lieu of flowers, in John's name will be gratefully accepted by the American Cancer Society for support of research at the UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and the Munson Hospice in Traverse City. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery, Saturday, March 23, in Elk Rapids. |
