TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Sue (Core) Socha, 57, lifelong native of Traverse City, died April 24, 2002, at their winter home in Hudson, Fla., due to complications from a stroke.
Mary was born on May 29, 1944, in Traverse City, the daughter of William and Fae Core. She was a 1962 graduate of Traverse City Central where she was a cheerleader, a member of the choir, pep club and very active in sports. Mary loved working on the preparation and planning committees for each class reunion for the class of '62. This year would have been Mary's 40th class reunion.
On November 5, 1965, she married Bernard J. Socha of Cheboygan. Mary and Barney were just beginning their lives as retirees. They had split their time between Traverse City and a beautiful home in Hudson, Fla. Mary was a proud native of Traverse City. She had lived within the same two blocks of "Slabtown" on the west side of town her entire life. She had several jobs including running a daycare in her home so that she could raise her two beautiful children and nurture many children of local families as well. She also owned Mary's Fun House, a gift shop. She and her husband, Barney, purchased and renovated many homes on the 800 block of West Front Street. She spent many years operating and managing those commercial homes. Mary was an active member of the Traverse City Elks Lodge and a member of "chit chat", a group of special friends. She also had fun promoting all activities of the NMC barbecue and the National Cherry Festival. She never missed a year of either.
Mary was a great wife, an awesome mother, the best grandmother her precious Jake could ever ask for, an aunt to all those who called her Aunt Mary (biological or not) and a wonderful sister. Her family meant the world to her. She was a friend to everyone who smiled at her, and was very generous and giving. She gave to so many in an unconditional and silent way. Mary always had a sparkle in her eye and was the life of any party. She was a beautiful person, and will be greatly missed by all those who had the honor of knowing her.
Mary is survived by her husband, Bernard J. Socha; her son, Otto of Traverse City, and her daughter, Kimberly (Shane) Crawford of Mancelona, and the light of her life, her grandson, Jake. She is also survived by her three brothers, Gilbert William (Lyndelle) Core, Harvey Core and David Core, all of Traverse City; her mother-in-law, Francis Socha of Cheboygan; sisters-in-law, Karen (Elmer) Hunsaker of Cheboygan, Dianne (Bill) Hellman of Portage and Linda (Joe) Martin of Cheboygan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William and Fae Core; her father-in-law, Otto Socha; and her brothers-in-law, Leal Mallory and Jerry VanFleet.
The family will receive visitors at Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, and again on Thursday, May 9, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
The memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at the church, with Pastor Bradley Will officiating.
