WAFFLE, 76, of Ellsworth, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. LEELANAU COUNTY - Josephine Burkit Dunlap, 93, died peacefully on Feb. 6, 2002, at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Leelanau County. She was the loving devoted wife of Dr. Henry Dunlap, who preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2000. Survivors include her children, Dr. Robert Dunlap of Tiburon, Calif., Nancy Stephen of Bay Mills; sisters-in-law, Mary Burkit of Monroe and Jean Lawrence of Troy; granddaughter, Anne (Bill) Winters of Ann Arbor; grandson, David (Lisa) Stephen of Aspen, Colo.; and great-grandsons, Sean, Henry and Kirby Winters of Ann Arbor. A Memorial service remembering Jo and Henry will take place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City on Friday, May 17 at 2 p.m. Their cremated remains will be placed together in the Bethlehem Lutheran Memorial Garden. Arrangements were by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. BUCKLEY - Dale F. Cade, 59, of Buckley, passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at home. Dale was born July 25, 1942, in Highland Park, the son of Gerald Edward and Marguerite (Sullivan) Cade. He was a member of the class of 1961 at Plainwell High School. Dale was a long-haul truck driver and had traveled through all 48 contiguous states, but always said that Michigan was the best. He married Linda Stallkamp on Aug. 23, 1969, in Otsego. They moved to Northern Michigan in 1976. He loved the rural setting of his home and his John Deere tractors. Dale is survived by his wife, Linda; his three sons, Jerry L. Cade of Chicago, Mark T. (Susan) Cade of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joseph D. (Kathy) Cade of Perry, Fla.; his father, Gerald E. Cade of Buckley; two brothers, Ronald E. (Sue) Cade of Otsego and Larry R. (Jacquie) Cade of Buckley; seven terrific grandchildren, Amanda and Trisha, Kaitlyn, Sean, Joshua and Matthew and Kien; as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marguerite Cade in 2002; his first wife, Gloria Ann (Figel) Cade in 1967; his brother, James in 1964; and his nephew, Robert E. Cade in 1984. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Buckley Gospel Tabernacle. Inurnment will be in Cornell Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Munson Hospice House Building Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. ROCHESTER HILLS - Michael David Fox, 45 of Rochester Hills, formerly of Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at home. He was born June 8, 1956, in Traverse City, the son of Ronald and Sue Fox. Michael is survived by his children, Jason and Emily of Rochester Hills; two sisters, Kelly (Leo) Schneider of Durand, and Karen Fox of Midland; three brothers, Dan (Sheila) Fox of Elk Rapids, Mark (Wendy) Fox of Rapid City, and Tom (Joannie) Fox of Garland, Texas; and his mother, Sue Fox of Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Fox. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 13, at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 5631 N. Adams Rd., Bloomfield Hills. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. On Tuesday, May 14, visitation will be at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Milton Township Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted locally to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - Jean E. Darnell, 77, of Hendersonville, N.C., passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at Pardee Memorial Hospital. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, she lived in Flint, Mich., before moving to Henderson County 15 years ago. Jean was born to the late Joseph Louis and Veronica Bridgette (Shannahan) LaSalle in Canada. An amazing woman, Jean went back to high school at the age of 40, when her youngest son wanted to drop out of high school. They graduated together in Flint. She then went on to graduate from a beauty college and received her beautician's license also while living in Flint. She was a member of St. Luke's and St. Michael's Catholic Churches in Flint. After raising her nine children in Flint, Jean's husband, John, convinced her to move to Hendersonville, N.C., following his retirement from Blue Arrow/Douglas Trucking Company after 40 years of employment. Although she hated leaving her children in Michigan, she came to love Hendersonville immediately. She enjoyed the people she met and the climate. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and became active in the church as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Hendersonville VFW Post #7467, Ladies Auxiliary. Jean ran for president of the local VFW and lost, but was soon elected to North Carolina VFW District #16 and served as president for two years. She won awards for several years for promoting the VFW's "Buddy Poppy Program." The family lost Jean at 10:30 a.m. May 10, 2002, following extensive cancer surgery. She awoke once and asked her daughters to give this message to all of her children, "Promise me you will all take care of each other." She died comfortably in her sleep with her husband John holding her hand. Jean is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Darnell of Hendersonville, N.C.; five sons, Michael J. Darnell of New Orleans, Patrick J. Darnell of St. Louis, Joseph L. Darnell and Gerald L. Darnell, both of Flushing, Mich., and John R. Darnell of Lawrence, Kan.; four daughters, May Ann "Ty" Darnell of Henderson, N.C., Linda J. Darnell of Gorham, N.H., Anita Moliterno of Flint, Mich., and Nancy C. Lawrence of Roland Park, Kan.; one sister, Eleanor Cashin of Taylor, Mich.; 19 grandchildren, Lisa Thiele of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., Jennifer Wiedeman of Las Vegas, Trisha Baker of Killeen, Texas, Jeremy Rowley of Anchorage, Alaska, Nik Wenck of Gorham, N.H., David Moliterno of Mount Pleasant, Mich., Dawn Duvendeck of Brighton, Mich., Monica and Michelle Darnell of Flushing, Mich., Adam, Faith, and Paul Darnell of Lawrence, Kan., John, Robert, Amy, and Joey Darnell of Holland, Mich., Kelly Berends of Holland, Mich., and Christopher and Sarah Bausch of Roland Park, Kan.; nine great-grandchildren, DeShawn, Keith, Alexis Baker of Killeen, Texas, Curtis Rucker of Killeen, Texas, Elijah Rowley of Anchorage, Alaska, and Thomas, Caitlin, Michael, and Rebecca Thiele of Lake Arrowhead, Calif. Along with her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Clete, and two sisters, Doreen and Delores. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. both Wednesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 16, at the Thos. Shepherd and Son Funeral Home in Henderson, N.C. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Brother John Salvas as celebrant. DeYoung, an accomplished musician of Folsom, Calif., died Jan. 30, 2002, in Citrus Heights, Calif. following a long illness. She is survived by her loving husband, Ted of Folsom, Calif.; daughter, Jennifer Shroyer and grandson, Jenson, both of Fair Oaks, Calif.; and her brother, Harold (Doris) McGlothlin of Traverse City; and other family members and friends. Graveside services will be held at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens on Friday, May 17, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Becky Chamberlain officiating. Arrangements are by the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - George Arthur 'Butch' Allen, of Traverse City, passed away, Friday, May 10, 2002. Butch was born June 29, 1943, in Newberry, the son of the late Alvin and Marion (Griffith) Allen. On Sept. 1, 1962, he married the former Mary Lou Councilor in Old Mission. Butch was a member of Teamsters 214, and was employed by the city of Traverse City for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening and doing his own lawn care, and especially loved his cat, Sam. Butch is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of Traverse City; his three sons, William Arthur (Sandra) Allen of Alba, George Scott (Linda) Allen of Traverse City and Peter James (Patricia) Allen of Kingsley; three grandchildren, Brandon (Krissy), Crystal and Morgyn; and one great-granddaughter; five sisters, Bonnie Lee, Georgia Ash, Barbara McAlpine, Gracie Cole and Rose Swan; and three brothers, Pat, Rex and Russ Allen, all of Indiana. Along with his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his brother, Francis "Sambo" Griffith, and his sister, Anna Mae Cole. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the family home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice. |
