Applebee, 105, of Kalkaska, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center - Long Term Care.She was born March 9, 1897, in Kalkaska, the daughter of the late Roderick and Esther (Huffman) Jones. Leta lived in Kalkaska until 1918, when she moved to Flint and married Walter S. Muchler in April 1918. She was a nurse and worked at Hurley Hospital until she retired in 1961. Walter passed away in December 1955. Leta married Glen Applebee in 1958, and they returned to Kalkaska in 1969. Leta was a member of Peoples Church and Rebekah Lodge, both in Kalkaska. Leta is survived by her loving family including her children, Mildred Hall of Belleville, Bernice Bryce of Louisiana, Elizabeth Wright of National City, Burton L. Muchler of Vasser, and Carl (Donna) Muchler of Traverse City; and nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and first husband, Leta was preceded in death by her second husband, Glen Applebee in 1975; and her brother, Earl Thompson. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Karges of the Peoples Church officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. KEWADIN - Lorraine M. Bigelow, 63, of Kewadin, died Thursday. She was born April 15, 1939, in Wayne County, to Joseph A. and Marie B. (Camden) Perreault. On Sept. 2, 1983, she married Dean Bigelow in Traverse City. Lorraine and her husband Dean owned and operated the Waters Edge Resort in Kewadin. She was a member of the Kewadin United Methodist Church, and enjoyed bible study and meditating with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Lorraine is survived by her husband, Dean of Kewadin; five children, Michael (Michelle) Martin of Traverse City, Jeffrey Martin of Brazil, Elisabeth (Scott) Marcantel of South Boardman, Cynthia (Matthew) Webb of Elk Rapids and James Martin of Virginia; six step-children, Dennis (Rebecca) Bigelow of Traverse City, Vicki Galloup of Traverse City, Kimberly (Bruce) Miller of Traverse City, Bradley (Robin) Bigelow of Washington state, Michelle (Mark) Hoffmann of Traverse City and Melanie (Gerald) Olson of Kingsley; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; a very special "daughter," Mei-leng; two brothers, and one sister; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 20, at the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Pier-Fitzgerald officiating. Schumacher, 79, of Elk Rapids, and formerly of Farmington, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 16, 2002. She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Toronto, Canada, the daughter of the late Walt and Madeliene (Highland) Rigby. She married Frank J. Schumacher on March 7, 1942. Bea was loved by all who knew her. She was an excellent cook and baker of her renowned chocolate chip cookies. Her laughter and love will be sorely missed. Bea is survived by her beloved son, Kurt (Sue) Schumacher of Elk Rapids; her cherished grandchildren, Julie (Dennis Cotton), and Kyle and Jay; her sister, Merle, and brothers, Ron (Arlene), Bob (Alice), and Bill (Nancy); and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Bea was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her son, Mark; her sister, Dorothy; and three brothers, Jack, Alan, and Gordon. Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Farmington on Monday, May 20, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church of Elk Rapids. Arrangements by McCabe Funeral Home in Farmington Hills. TRAVERSE CITY - Aubrey Wilfred Wagner, of Traverse City, died at the age of 87 on May 18, 2002, following a brief illness. He grew up on a farm in Western Kentucky and served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Helen. Aubrey, formerly of Troy, retired from a career as a pump operator for the Southeastern Oakland Water Authority and moved to Traverse City in 1991. Aubrey loved to play euchre with his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed socializing and playing bingo at the Traverse City Senior Center. Aubrey is survived by three sons, Mike and wife Carol Wagner of Traverse City, Daniel W. Wagner of Royal Oak and Greg and wife Michele Wagner of Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, Julie and Craig Wagner of Traverse City, and Nicholas and Carmen Wagner of Cumming, Ga.; his sister, Wanda and his brother-in-law, Milton Johnson of Sabina, Ohio; and his niece, Cheryl Luke and nephew, Milton Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with Pastor Larry Ross officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post 2780, the Traverse City Senior Center, or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. MAPLE CITY - Esther Sara Flaska, 94, of Maple City, passed away Friday, May 17, 2002. She was born Sept. 6, 1907, in Cedar, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Brzezinski) Bloswick. She grew up on the family farm in Leelanau County where, at the age of 14, it was her job to deliver the cucumbers to the Cedar Railroad for commercial transport, driving the family Model T Ford. Esther married Rudolph "Rudy" Flaska in Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived her life with a sense of adventure and enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband, Rudy. Esther farmed her own cherry orchards for over 30 years. Esther loved spending time in the kitchen where she was skilled at canning the fruits of her labor including vegetables from her garden and fruits from the orchards, and she shared these with her family. She also grew beautiful flowers in her gardens. She liked watching television, and especially enjoyed auto and horse racing, but her favorite show was always Lawrence Welk. Esther also found great pleasure in getting together with her sisters for a game of scrabble or cards. Esther is survived by her sisters, Clara Bumgardner of Maple City and Helen Elmer of Six Lakes, Mich.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy; one brother and three sisters. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the funeral home, with Pastor Lou Grettenberger officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Muskegon. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease.
