May 26, 2002ObituariesMT. PLEASANT - Stella Althouse Marks, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2002. She was born Aug. 12, 1906.She graduated from Eastern Michigan University and obtained her master's degree in botany from Wayne State University. She married George Marks who preceded her in death in 1978. She taught junior high school science classes in Traverse City from 1929 to 1942. She later taught in the Clare Public Schools from 1955 to 1972. She began teaching before her family farm had electricity and was teaching when men walked on the moon. Her son, Donald, dedicated his doctorate thesis to her and noted that she was surfing the Internet at age 90. Stella enjoyed her family and keeping abreast of achievements in science. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Anderson of Houston, Texas, her sons, Dr. Donald Marks of Alexandria Va., and Andrew Marks of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant. ELMIRA - Wilma A. Roudabush, 63, of Elmira, died Thursday, May 23, 2002. Born on Aug. 26, 1938, in Engadine, Wilma moved to Elmira from Walled Lake in 1992. Wilma was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Boyne City, R.S.V.P. and the Commission on Aging. She was also a volunteer driver for the Road to Recovery. Wilma is survived by her husband of 31 years, Lloyd; four children, Cheryl (Rev. Robert) Wurst of Cedar, Ann (Mark) Armstrong of Marine City, Janet (Charles) Messer of Stockbridge, and Dawn Hoig of St. Helen; four stepchildren, Dennis (Connie) VanLuven of Lapeer, Patricia (Keith) Welch of West Bloomfield, Susan Roudabush of Oxford, and Thomas (Vickie) Roudabush of Boston; 24 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and three sisters and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her son, Jon Kokko, on June 4, 1970. Visitation will be held at from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 27, at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Christ Lutheran Church in Boyne City, with the Rev. Kenneth Bernthal officiating. Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at a later date. TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Ross Campbell, 90, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, while walking near the Senior Adult Care Home in Traverse City where he and his wife, Ellen, were residing. Rod and Ellen had previously lived at their home on Elk Lake for 25 years. They also have a home in Green Valley, Ariz. Rod was born on March 23, 1912, the son of the late Norman and Janet Campbell of Muskegon. After graduating from Muskegon Heights High School in 1930, he attended Lawrence Institute of Technology in Detroit, majoring in metallurgy. He then began a successful career in the foundry business. His career included employment at Campbell, Wyantt and Cannon in Muskegon, as well as McKinnon Industries, Ltd. in Canada. Rod founded and operated Centrifugal Foundry in Muskegon and later Ferro Cast Corporation in Zeeland. An inventor as well as an entrepreneur, Rod acquired several patents. Rod married the former Ellen Begley on June 8, 1940. Rod and Ellen enjoyed an active life of hunting, fishing, snow skiing, golf and travel. He made friends easily with his quick wit, intelligence and affable manner. The joy he found in life, his self confidence and determination were evident in the twinkle of his eyes. Rod is survived by his wife, Ellen of Traverse City; his daughter, Gail Campbell-Ferguson; his son-in-law, David Ferguson; and two grandsons, Christopher and Daniel Ferguson, all of Silverdale, Wash.; his brother, Hugh Campbell of North Muskegon; his sisters, Ellen Bush and Elsie (Charles) Toppen of Muskegon; his sister-in-law, Harriett (Galen) Sheetz of Palm Springs, Calif.; his brothers-in-law, Thomas Begley of Muskegon and Phillip (Ann) Begley of Traverse City; as well as many nieces and nephews. Rod was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Janice Mae Campbell; his brothers, Norman and Donald Campbell; and sisters, Catherine Jones and Janet Pfeiffer. Hogan, 43, of Traverse City, passed away Friday afternoon in the company of his loving family and devoted friends. He was born Feb. 24, 1959, in Detroit, a child of Terence and Darla Hogan. Tom was a graduate of St. Francis High School in Traverse City, where in his senior year, he served as student council president and was the starting quarterback for the St. Francis Gladiators. Tom's journey through life took him all over the country. After many years traveling the Western United States, Tom settled on the shores of Silver Lake. It was at this time that he obtained his Great Lakes captains license. Some of Tom's most rewarding days were charter fishing in the Bays of Traverse City. His greatest role in life was that of a devoted and loving father. His legacy will be carried on through his three wonderful children. While they will have a tremendous void in their lives, they will continue on the path inspired by their father. Tom was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Traverse City Elks Club. Tom is survived by his loving and caring mother, Darla C. Hogan; and his three children, James Terence, Kaitlin Maureen, and Molly Margaret. He is also survived by his siblings, Timothy J. Hogan and wife Kathy of Orlando, Fla., Nancy A. Throneburg and husband Charles of Roanoke, Ind., Martin F. Hogan of Battle Creek, and Jennifer M. Linder and husband Chris of Westchester, Ohio; his godparents, John and Maureen Klein of Orchard Lake; and his nieces and nephews, Caitlin Lewis of Orlando, Fla., Madison Throneburg of Roanoke, Ind., Kaitlynn Livingston of Battle Creek, Tara Vezina of Westchester, Ohio, and baby Linder also of Westchester. Tom was blessed with a multitude of wonderful friends in the Greater Traverse City area. He was preceded in death by his father, Terence in 1993. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary recitation will take place at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment will be Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery, Traverse City. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Grand Traverse Area Hospice, or to Mass Intentions. TRAVERSE CITY - Donna J. Finnila, 73, of Traverse City, and formerly Perry, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2002. She was born Sept. 19, 1928, the daughter of the late Andrew and Ferne (Benson) Whitman. She married John Finnila in Perry, on June 26, 1928. Donna was a homemaker caring for her family, and was a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 115. She later served as the treasurer for East Bay Township for 18 years. Following her retirement in 1993, she served as a township trustee. Donna was also a life member of VFW post 3733, and spent many hours volunteering for various civic organizations. Donna is survived by three children, Mark Finnila of Fowler, Cathy Finnila of Aurora, Minn., and Mitchel (Gail) Finnila of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Bobbie Jo Miller, Tammy Jean Rademacher, Nichole Finnila, and Gary and Cheantel Liggett; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special pet, Spankie. Along with her parents, Donna was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, John Finnila; a daughter in infancy, Roberta Jean; three brothers, Richard, Roger, and Robert; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Finnila. Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday, May 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A prayer service will take place at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kendale Dennis officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to one of her favorite organizations, the East Bay Township Fire Department. TRAVERSE CITY - Charles Edwin Shields, 71, of Traverse City, and formerly of Detroit, died Thursday, May 23, 2002. Charles was born February 17, 1931, in Detroit, the son of the late George and Mabel (Peterson) Shields. He retired after 30 years with the City of Detroit Water Department. He was a generous man with a great sense of humor, and was known to his grandchildren as "techno grandpa" because he could fix anything. He will be fondly remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather and pet owner. Charles is survived by his wife, Joan; three children, Joseph (Susie) Shields of Wisconsin, Suzanne (Charles) Kerndt of Traverse City, and Cynthia (Mark) Cirgol of Wisconsin; five grandsons, Matthew Shields, Austin, Garrett, and Connor Kerndt, and Aaron Cirgol; his sister, Virginia (Ted) Wynne of Elk Rapids; and his faithful dog, Barney. TRAVERSE CITY - Marilyn Elizabeth Weindorf, 69, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 with her family and friends by her side. Marilyn was born Feb. 25, 1933, in St. Paul, Minn. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius and Florence M. Malone. Formerly of Ann Arbor, Marilyn was a medical secretary for Dr.'s Brandt, Fischer and Smith. She is survived by her devoted husband of forty five years, Louis Weindorf; their sons, John (Julia) Weindorf and James Weindorf; three grandchildren, Nicole Harding, Joseph Weindorf and Noah Weindorf; and her loving sister, Patricia Devine of Ann Arbor. She will also be missed by Jasper, B.J., and Savannah, family pets she adored. Marilyn was a loving daughter, mother, wife and grandmother and is remembered for her constant generosity in helping others and her kindness, warmth and grace expressed in her life's journey. She delighted in being a mother and grandmother. Marilyn was an avid reader and she loved writing letters to stay connected to friends and family. Her enjoyment of life was never greater than during summers spent with her family at Lake Leelanau. Following her wishes, the family will hold a private service in celebration of her life. Belleville, 88, of Surprise, Ariz., and formerly of Traverse City, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, in Sun City West, Ariz. She was born July 15, 1913, in Blissfield. Gertrude married and became a wonderful homemaker for her family. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City and Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West, Ariz. Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Kay Hartwig of Surprise, Ariz., her two sons, Douglas Belleville of Sun City West, Ariz., and Gary Belleville Kalamazoo; one brother, Frank Saxton of Blissfield; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
