November 1, 2002ObituariesFRANKFORT - Mabel M. Fick, 82, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.She was born in Long Lake Township, the daughter of William R. and Lena M. (Betts) Carmien. Mabel spent the majority of her life in Benzonia and Beulah. On Oct. 20, 1938, in Ecorse, she married Dale W. Fick. Mabel was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Beulah where she was a former member of the vestry and altar guild. She was a member and past president of the Animal Welfare League, and a former chairperson for BACN, both in Benzie County. Mabel had been employed as a journalist for the Record Patriot, the librarian at the Beulah Library and as an information specialist for the Benzie Central Schools. Mabel is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Burleigh of Frankfort and Virginia Rhinesmith of Norton Shores, Mich.; four grandchildren, Caroline (James) Vincent, Heather Maier, Benjamin Rhinesmith and Elizabeth Helena Fick; four great-grandchildren, Lucas and Dominick Maier and Alexis and Joshua Vincent; and many loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dale Fick on Nov. 20, 1985, and her son, Sid in 1988; two brothers, Bruce and Bill; and three sisters, Vivien Collins, Edrie Moulder and Madge Hensel. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. from St. Philip's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Harold Comer, rector, officiating. Interment will follow in Benzonia Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Animal Welfare League or St. Philip's Episcopal Church. The Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes assisted the family. SUTTONS BAY - Mary Lou Bumgardner, 68, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A Mass of All Saints will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Wayne Dziekan serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Leelanau Township Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. TRAVERSE CITY - Stanley F. Woods, 86, loving husband and father, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Birchwood Nursing Home following a lingering illness. Stan was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Kalamazoo, the son of Maurice E. and Verna (Mauk) Woods. He graduated from Western University in 1939 and did post-graduate studies at the University of Michigan while working for the State of Michigan in Lansing. Stan served his country honorably with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. In 1946, Stan was selected to head a newly formed personnel department at the then Traverse City Regional State Hospital and presided there until his retirement in 1996. Stan loved boating of all kinds, and had one of the few sailboats on the Grand Traverse Bay when he moved to the area in 1946. He was always interested in scouting, having attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and he was also a Sea Scout. Stan worked in scouting many years as his sons were growing up. He was on the board of the Scenic Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America until the time of his death. Stan was also on the board of the Churchside Village, was a member of the First Congregational Church, and the Elks Club. He loved hunting with his brother and good friends, and enjoyed many years of golfing with dear friends in the "Saturday Morning Group" at the Traverse City Golf & Country Club. Stan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mariam (Hoek) Woods; sons, Kenneth G. (Jackie) Woods of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Joel M. Woods of Harbor Springs; and his sister-in-law, Virginia Woods of Charlevoix. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice May Woods; and his brother, Wayne J. Woods. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational on Monday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m., where friends may call at the time of the service. The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue will be officiating. Burial will be in the First Congregational Church's Garden of Remembrance. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Congregational Church or to the Scenic Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. ANN ARBOR - Alice C. Haisley, 97, wife of former superintendent of schools, Otto W. Haisley, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City. She was born in Detroit on Sept. 9, 1905, the daughter of Judge Sherman D. and Sylvia (Cornell) Callender. After attending Goucher College for a year, she transferred to the University of Michigan where she received her bachelor's degree in 1927. After a year at the University of Michigan Law School, she moved to New York where she attended Columbia University and received a degree in library science in 1929. Following her education, she worked as a librarian in the Ann Arbor Public Library and Henry Ford Hospital Medical Library in Detroit. On June 15, 1935, in Detroit, she married Otto W. Haisley. Alice was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, the American Association of University Women, the Book and Thimble Club, the Ann Arbor Women's City Club, the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop, the New England Colony of Women, the D.A.R. and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Alice is survived by two daughters, Virginia "Ginny" Roosevelt of Traverse City and Sylvia (Steve) Patchin of Midland; four grandchildren, Lisa (Brad) Boilore, Thomas Roosevelt, Stephen (Colette) Patchin and Scott (Jennifer) Patchin; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto in 1959. Her family has fond memories of her playing piano, serving delicious meals, planting her lovely garden, sharing her books and travels, and helping people in need. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 South Fourth Avenue. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 306 N. Division St. in Ann Arbor. Memorial contributions may be offered to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or Haisley Elementary School. DARLENE 'DAR' HULBURT, 62, of Elk Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Elk Rapids Middle School Gymnasium, 707 E. Third St. in Elk Rapids, with visitation continuing at the school from 9 a.m. until the time of the services. A full obituary will appear in the next edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. LAWRENCE MODRESKI, 86, of Traverse City, and formerly of Manistee, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, where visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. KINGSLEY - Edna V. Potts, 84, of Kingsley, died Oct. 30, 2002. She was born Feb. 28, 1918 in Alanson, the daughter of Frank P. and Nancy Viola (Ordway) Martiny. On Feb. 28, 1939, Edna wed Irvin W. Potts Sr. in Petoskey. The couple resided in Petoskey for 10 years before moving to Traverse City. Following her husband's death in 1978, Edna moved to Kingsley. In Kingsley, she was the owner and operator of the Kingsley Restaurant as well as the Dutchess Restaurant in Honor. Edna was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and cooking but most of all, loved the time she spent with her family. Edna is survived by her children, Dr. Irvin W. (Rosemarie) Potts Jr. of Sanford Lake, Nancy (Ronald) Lueck of Kingsley and Francis C. (Brenda) Potts of Traverse City; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Louise Young of Alanson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter; a brother, Francis Martiny, and a sister, Helen M. Smith. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Kingsley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Char Minger officiating. Visitation will continue at the church Saturday from 2 p.m. until the time of the services. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Traverse City Salvation Army, or to the Kingsley United Methodist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. |
