TRAVERSE CITY - Hazel Charlotte DeTour, 79, of Traverse City and formerly of Petoskey, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002.
      She was born in Perry, N.Y. on Jan. 25, 1923, to Leslie and Emma J. (Burroughs) Hurlburt. On July 7, 1941, Hazel married Stanley DeTour.
      She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the Traverse City State Hospital, retiring in 1981 after 30 years of service. Hazel enjoyed being a mother and spending time with her family. She always found time help others and was involved in fundraising for the Father Fred Foundation. She enjoyed working with her hands and she was accomplished at knitting, crocheting and needlework. In the past few years she had come to enjoy attending and playing bingo.
      Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Lee) Salisbury of Traverse City, and Patricia (Gene) Hanna of Williamsburg; two sisters, Mary Christoff of Petoskey and Elizabeth (Raymond) Luczek of Traverse City; her brother, Leslie (Helen) Hurlburt Jr. of Burton; her four grandchildren, Lynn Wilson of Nashua, N.H., Melissa (Gar) Gillespie of Kalamazoo, Matthew Hanna of Flint, and Benjamin and Tyler Hanna both of Williamsburg; and one great-grandson, Jordan Hanna.
      She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Kittie Belle Burroughs; her parents, Leslie and Emma Hurlburt; her husband, Stanley DeTour; her sisters, Lillian Norman and Cora Mae Hurlburt; and her brother, Howard Hurlburt.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with a rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at St. Francis Catholic Church, where visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Fr. Patrick Maher will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow the Mass in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Father Fred Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      ELK RAPIDS - Darlene "Dar" Hulburt, 62, of Elk Rapids died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Dar was born April 3, 1940, in Elk Rapids, to Roy E. and Grace (Sutter) Stilson. She married Gordon C. Hulburt on May 28, 1960, in Elk Rapids.
      She was a much-loved teacher's aide at Lakeland Elementary School in Elk Rapids. Dar was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. She loved sports and supported all the Elk Rapids School functions. She especially enjoyed football and ran all the stats for the games. Dar also enjoyed traveling and camping. She loved her family and grandchildren very much.
      Dar is survived by her husband, Gordon C. Hulburt of Elk Rapids; two sons, Gordon T. (Bobbie) Hulburt of Gaylord, and Dale (Peggy) Hulburt of Dewitt; three daughters, Pamela (Michael) Couturier of Twin Lake, Vickie (Andy) Grow of Kodiak, Alaska, and Katrine (Karl) Balch of Charlevoix; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Jim (Sue) Stilson and Mickey (Sally) Stilson; her sister, Nancy Stilson; her aunt, Marion Ring; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Elk Rapids Middle School Gymnasium, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein officiating. Friends may call at the school today from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
      Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Lakeland Elementary School for playground equipment.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Betty J. Mericle, 75, of Traverse City died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by her family after being critically ill for 64 days.
      Betty had worked in quality control at Sara Lee for 17 years and, most recently, worked at Target for the past seven years. She attended Central United Methodist Church, enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, shopping and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
      Born Feb. 26, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Kivett) Phillips. On Nov. 30, 1946, in Traverse City, she married Lawrence S. Mericle Jr., who survives.
      Also surviving are her six children, Sherry (John) Heining of Kansas City, Mo., Lawrence "Lucky" Mericle III of Las Vegas, Nev., Terry Wagner of Traverse City, Christine Kiblinger of Traverse City, Jeffrey Mericle of Traverse City, and Patty Mericle of Traverse City; son-in-law, Dennis Wagner; 10 grandchildren, Tom and Amy Heining, Mandy and Matthew Wagner, Nick and Becky Fry, Jeffrey Mericle Jr., Alyssa, Logan and Shawn Mericle; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Wagner and Alivia Manning.
      Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tamara Williams officiating.
      Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, the Father Fred Foundation or Central United Methodist Church.
      The Mericle family would like to thank Dr. Mack Stirling, other wonderful doctors, and the nurses in CTCU and CCU at Munson Medical Center for the special care that they gave Betty.
     
      ELMIRA - Chester J. Zaremba, 80, of Elmira died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village in Gaylord.
      He was born in Elmira on July 26, 1922, and had been a lifelong resident of Elmira.
      Chester was a partner in Zaremba Equipment for over 50 years and had owned the Zaremba Bar in Elmira. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Elmira and was instrumental in the building of the church. He was a member of St. Thomas Church Men's Society, a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was awarded the "Knight of the Year" award in 1999. Chester was an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman and loved to garden.
      His family will remember him as a loving father, grandfather and the BEST father that anyone could ask for.
      Chester is survived by his loving and devoted wife, the former Dolores Burzynski, whom he married Oct. 30, 1954, at St. Mary Church in Gaylord. Also surviving are his children, Sharon (John) Dunlap of Rochester Hills, Karen (Tom) DeNike of Boyne City, David of Wolverine, Diane (George) Kligman of Traverse City, and Jerome (Natasa) of Northville; grandchildren, Kymberly Dunlap, Kevin, Brian and Michelle Metzger, Christie Zaremba, Joey and Steven Kligman, and Victoria, Jonathan, and Patrick Zaremba; six sisters, Martha Polus and Anna Burdo both of St. Clair Shores, Cecelia (Frederick) Sulak, Helen (Ted) Makarewicz, Sophia Skrocki and Bernice (Frank) Lepera, all of Sterling Heights; one brother, Walter (Yvonne) Zaremba of Elmira; sister-in-law, Trudy Zaremba; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances; his sister, Mary Franckowiak, and his brothers, Joseph and Casimer Zaremba.
      Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. A rosary by the St. Thomas Ladies Society will be prayed at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, from St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Elmira. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery in Elmira.
      Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral School, Aspen Ridge Retirement Village, or to the Alzheimer's Association, through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Barbara "Barbie" Ann Dunklow, 45, a homemaker of Traverse City, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 2, 1957, in Battle Creek, she was the daughter of Mitchell and Mary (Chandler) Yanosky.
      Barbie had been a longtime resident of Tendercare where she enjoyed participating in all activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and her grandchildren.
      Survivors include her father, Mitchell Yanosky of Harietta; son, Stephen Dunklow of Traverse City; daughter, Crystal Dunklow of Maple City; two grandchildren, Shelby and Jeremy; son-in-law, Jason; three brothers, Jimmy, Bob, and David.
      She was preceded in death by her mother.
      Memorial services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. Daniel Farkas will be officiating.

      ALGOMA, Wis. - Kenneth Dean Neddo, 60, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, as a result of complications due to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), at his home in Algoma, Wis.
      Ken was born June 21, 1942, in Traverse City, the son of Clarence and Evelyn Neddo. He was a 1960 graduate of Glen Lake High School.
      He had worked for General Motors Corporation in Pontiac, and then as a skilled welder for Bay Shipbuilders in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. for 27 years. Ken was a hunting enthusiast and a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.
      Ken is survived by his wife, Donna L. Neddo of Algoma, Wis.; his son, Kenneth D. Neddo Jr. of Green Bay, Wis., his daughter, Susan (Brian) Rabas and his two grandsons, Jordan and Jacob of Two Rivers, Wis.; his parents, Clarence and Evelyn Neddo of Maple City; three sisters, Linda and Janice Neddo of Maple City, and Diane (Charles) Adams of Bellevue, Neb.; nephews, Nathan Adams of Omaha, Neb., and Kyle Adams of Bellevue, Neb.; and two uncles, one aunt and cousins.
      Funeral services will be conducted today at the Schinderle Funeral Home in Algoma, Wis. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made in Ken's honor to the ALS Association.

      MONTGOMERY, Texas - Robert Douglas "Doug" Anderson, 59, of Montgomery, Texas, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in Yale, S.D., while hunting pheasant.
      He was born in Douglas, Ariz. on April 23, 1943, to Robert and Pauline Anderson. He was a graduate of the University of Tulsa. Doug served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On Oct. 6, 1973, Doug married Betty Parker in Levelland, Texas.
      Doug retired after 26 years of service as an engineer with Amoco Production. He loved the outdoors, was an avid golfer and was well known for his beautiful rose gardens. Doug was a member of the First Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas.
      Doug is survived by his wife of 29 years, Betty; daughters, Tonya Munro, and Lanie (Joe) McManus all of Traverse City, and son, Matthew of Oklahoma; six grandchildren. all of Traverse City, Erica, Robert, Brian and Catherine Phillips, Rachel and Kyle McManus; one great-granddaughter, Starr Phillips; his mother, Pauline of Sperry, Okla.; his brother, Jim "Wally" (Darlene) Anderson of Tyler, Texas; three nephews, Kendal, Kelley and Cam Anderson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Burke and nephew, Alan Burke of Montgomery, Texas; and numerous relatives and friends.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Anderson in 1975.
      Services were held in Sperry, Okla.

      RICHARD D. 'DICK' KNAPP, 58, of Suttons Bay died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Fr. John Paul from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor will be officiating.

      STEPHEN JOSEPH MAREK, 89, of Bear Lake died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia. Visitation will take place at the church Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
      Cremation took place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee, and final interment will be in Mona View Cemetery in Muskegon Heights.

      BEULAH PARKER, 73, of Kalkaska died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Wolfe Funeral Home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
     
      FERNDALE - Robert B. Browne, 82, of Ferndale died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002.
      Bob was the beloved husband of Christine (Watson) Browne; dear father of Kathleen (Chris) Carlstein and Robert B. (Georganne) Browne; and two grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty (Earl) Convery and his brother, Bruce (Clare) Browne.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Directors, 500 West Nine Mile Road in Ferndale, (888) 544-8500.
