      ELLEN P. BEIRNES, 87, of Traverse City, died Saturday morning, Nov. 2, 2002, at her home.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      STANLEY J. 'SHORTY' JANOWIAK, 71, of Manistee, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at West Shore Medical Center.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Prayers from the Order of Christian Funerals will be prayed at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home Monday.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will immediately follow the Mass in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
      DALE E. MINICK, 67, of Rapid City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Interment services for MARY PARR, 113, who was America's oldest living citizen, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Mausoleum of Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Mary died Oct. 29, 2002 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
      Dr. Homer Nye of The Presbyterian Church will officiate at the service.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      STANLEY F. WOODS, 86, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Birchwood Nursing Home.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at the First Congregational Church, where friends may call at the time of the service. Burial will be in church's Garden of Remembrance.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      Died November 1, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - A beloved husband, parent, and friend, Richard D. "Dick" Knapp, 58, of Suttons Bay, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Those who were fortunate enough to have Dick in their lives knew him to be a kind, sensitive and loving man. While dedicated to his family and to his work, Dick also loved to use his hands, pursuing various carpentry projects and working in the flower gardens around his home. Always appreciative of life's simple pleasures, Dick enjoyed U of M football, a good burger from the grill, and a refreshing swim in Lake Michigan.
      Born Jan. 25, 1944, in Muskegon, he was the son of Charles N. and Ellen Fern (Hassinger) Knapp. He married the former Helen Contos in West Bloomfield in 1986.
      Dick received his bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Northern Michigan University and Wayne State University respectively, and then was employed by the State of Michigan, working in children's services for 30 years. After retiring, Dick had spent the past 4 1/2 years working with Boysville of Michigan in Traverse City.
      Dick is survived by his wife, Helen Knapp; his two daughters, Brenda (Brian) Kigar of Delaware, Ohio, Gretchen (Keith) Robinson of Rockford, and his son, Christopher (Krista Girty) Knapp of Ypsilanti; four grandchildren, Fritz, Cliff, Emma and Zachary; two sisters, Diane (Robert) Clem of Reno, Nev., and Charlene (Charles) Hall of West Bloomfield; and his brother-in-law, Paul Contos of Alma.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 6th St., in Traverse City, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today.
      Funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, with the Rev. Fr. John Paul of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Ann Arbor officiating.
      Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church, or to the Cherryland Humane Society. Envelopes will be provided at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

      Died October 31, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Betty J. Mericle, 75, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by her family after being critically ill for 64 days.
      Betty had worked in quality control at Sara Lee for 17 years and most recently, worked at Target for the past 7 years. She attended Central United Methodist Church, enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, shopping, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
      Born Feb. 26, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Kivett) Phillips. On Nov. 30, 1946, in Traverse City, she married Lawrence S. Mericle Jr., who survives.
      Also surviving are her six children, Sherry (John) Heining of Kansas City, Mo., Lawrence "Lucky" Mericle III of Las Vegas, Nev., Terry Wagner of Traverse City, Christine Kiblinger of Traverse City, Jeffrey Mericle of Traverse City, and Patty Mericle of Traverse City; son-in-law, Dennis Wagner; 10 grandchildren, Tom and Amy Heining, Mandy and Matthew (Elizabeth Petoskey) Wagner, Nick and Becky Fry, Jeffrey Mericle Jr., Alyssa, Logan and Shawn Mericle; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Wagner and Alivia Manning.
      Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tamara Williams officiating.
      Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, the Father Fred Foundation or Central United Methodist Church.
      The Mericle family would like to thank Dr. Mack Stirling, other wonderful doctors, and the nurses in CTCU and CCU at Munson Medical Center for the special care that they gave Betty.
     
      Beulah Parker
      Died November 1, 2002
      KALKASKA - Beulah Parker, 73, loving wife and mother, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Beulah was born April 6, 1929, in Wheeling, W.Va., the daughter of Howard and Helen (Warth) Hesson. On April 12, 1947, she married Robert W. Parker in Detroit.
      The couple lived in Detroit, Lincoln Park, Taylor, and Sterling Heights before moving to Kalkaska in 1991 to enjoy their time in northern Michigan. Beulah enjoyed fishing, working on ceramics, flower gardening, and rooting for her beloved Detroit Tigers, but most of all she enjoyed the hours she shared with her family.
      Beulah is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Robert; her four children, Alan (Helen) Parker of Acme, Gordon (Chris) Parker of St. Petersburg, Fla., Bruce (Sandi) Parker of Fife Lake, and Beverly (Jeff) Evans of Lincoln Park; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret (Charles) Nexsen, Louise (Paul) Gerek, and Joan (Jack) White; and brothers John Hesson, and Sherman (Julie) Hesson.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Howard Hesson and William Cunningham; and sister Ada Erickson.
      Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4 at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Stark officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Scenic Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Kalkaska United Methodist Church.
