November 4, 2002ObituariesEllen BeirnesDied November 2, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Ellen Beirnes, 87, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born April 25, 1915, in Govan, Scotland, she was the daughter of John and Ellen (Plunkett) Steed. On July 9, 1942 in Glasgow, Scotland, Ellen married George Wesley Beirnes. A resident of Traverse City since 1982, she was formerly from Scotland, Canada and Southfield, where she had lived for a number of years. Ellen was a member of the First Christian Church, Traverse City Area Senior Chorus since 1990, Commission on Aging, RSVP and AARP. She also enjoyed the time she volunteered at Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital. Ellen served in the WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force - British) during World War II. She enjoyed cross-stitching, knitting, singing, and was especially proud of her Scottish heritage and her family. The Beirnes family feels proud to have had Ellen as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She reached out and touched many lives and will be dearly missed. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, George Wesley Beirnes of Traverse City; sons, John Beirnes of Farmington Hills, Glenn (Carla) Beirnes of Spring, Texas; daughter, Nancy Winogrodzki of Buckley; foster-brother, Jim Alexander of Scotland; eight grandchildren, Amber (Jon) Dunn, Oliver (Katie) Winogrodzki, Elizabeth Winogrodzki, Anna Winogrodzki, Tara (Jim) Shaw, Steven Beirnes, Ian Beirnes and Amy Beirnes; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Dunn. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Nan Mitchie. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City this evening, Nov. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Larry Ross will be officiating. CASIMER R. 'CASS' KUCHAREK, 72, of Echo Township, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at Grace Community Church in Central Lake. Arrangements were made by Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth. RAYMOND C. JOHNSON, 75, of Curran, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. MICHAEL JOSEPH MAHAR, 3½, of Interlochen, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at home. Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. |
