MARIE ROSE BACKUS, 95, of Denville, N.J., formerly of Thompsonville, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, N.J.
      A full obituary with service times will be published in the Traverse City Record-Eagle later this week.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements.
     
      JAMES LAVERNE BURNHAM, 67, of Suttons Bay, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at his home.
      No services are planned at this time.

      JULIA L. HAMMOND, 72, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, at the Pinegrove Church of God, with Pastor Marc Hoard officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      EDWARD C. KUCHAREK, 74, of Grayling, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at his home.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Grayling.
      Arrangements by Sorenson Funeral Home, Grayling.
     
      BETTY D. LIFFORD, 79, of Grayling, and formerly of Bear Lake Township in Kalkaska, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at her home.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at Bear Lake Christian Church.
      Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      ROBERT JONATHAN 'JON' MOORE, 46, of Costa Rica, and formerly of Traverse City, died Oct. 15, 2002.
      A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Lowell First United Methodist Church in Lowell, Mich.
     
      ROBERT 'BOB' OSTRANDER, 78, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Unity Church of Traverse City, 3600 5 Mile Road.
      The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is serving the family.
     
      VIRGINIA T. SUTTON, 84, of Grayling, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at her home.
      Private family services were held. Burial was in the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery.

      Raymond C. Johnson
      Died November 2, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Raymond Clarence Johnson, 75, of Curran, died after an extended illness at Grand Traverse Pavilions on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.
      He was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Detroit, the son of Clarence and Bertha Johnson. Ray served in the Coast Guard. He married Cecilia Maria Johnson on Oct. 20, 1951, and received his degree in pharmacy from Ferris State College that same year.
      Ray had an active and full life. He raced outboard motor powered boats and competed in a national championship, was a private pilot and owned several small planes, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Ray also built and flew radio-controlled airplanes.
      He owned and operated pharmacies in Detroit and Traverse City and a hobby shop for radio-controlled enthusiasts in Traverse City.
      Ray is survived by his wife, Cecilia of Curran; their son Donn (Kathy) Johnson of Traverse City, and their four daughters, Susan (Timothy) Roache of Elk Rapids, Carin (William) Northway of Traverse City, Jean (Daniel) Mauk of Traverse City and Kristen (James) Kenney of Charlevoix; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Christopher Kattelus, Eric Kattelus, Allison Mauk and Johanna Mauk.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara.
      Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.

      Lawrence M. Modreski
      Died October 30, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Lawrence M. Modreski, 86, of Traverse City, and formerly of Manistee, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Ludington, to the now late Joseph and Catherine (Chycinski) Modreski. Lawrence married Ruth M. Fojut on Aug. 19, 1944, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved the outdoors.
      Lawrence is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Frederick Gilmore of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Frederick (Joyce) Gilmore of Austin, Texas, and Daniel Gilmore of East Lansing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth on Sept. 11, 1996; a grandson, Christopher Gilmore; two brothers, Harry and Joseph Modreski; and his sister, Theresa Zawacki.
      Memorial services were held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home, with Father William Zwiefka serving as celebrant.
      Memorials have been established in Lawrence's name for The American Lung Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
      The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
      Ina Mae Rabon
      Died November 4, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ina Mae Rabon, 73, of Traverse City, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      She was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the daughter of Essie Belle (Branton) and Oscar Bertrand Martin.
      Ina had been employed in the dietary department of Baptist Medical Center in Columbia, S.C. She later moved to Pontiac and then moved to Traverse City in 1997. She made her home at Riverview Terrace and enjoyed bingo, embroidery, reading, garage sales and trips to the casino.
      Ina is survived by her daughters, Jacquelyn (Glenn) Lowe of Traverse City and Audrey M. (Gary) Brown of Pontiac; and her grandchildren, Jeremy Jason Sanders of Mt. Pleasant and Julian and Amanda Marcus of Pontiac. Also surviving are her sisters, Melvedene (George) Sims of Columbia, S.C., and Wilma Shelly of Conway, S.C.
      Ina was preceded in death by her parents; her son Steven Wayne Rabon; and by a sister, Jessamon King.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with Pastor Louise Holder of Bayview Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Visitation will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

      Died November 4, 2002
      GAYLORD - Raymond A. Savina, 72, of Gaylord, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Otsego Memorial Hospital.
      Born in Rogers City on Dec. 19, 1929, Ray was the son of Alfred and Anna (Micketti) Savina. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
      He owned Ray's Mobil in Rogers City for 20 years and then moved to Gaylord in 1982. Ray later retired from Georgia Pacific in Gaylord in 1994, after 14 years of employment.
      Ray is survived by his wife, Hella; six children, Julie (Carmen) Auriemma of Gaylord, Laura (David) Grossman of Rogers City, Michael (Luz Maria) Savina of Naperville, Ill., Claire (Glen) Momrik of Posen, John Savina of Whitmore Lake and Diana (Corey) Ghiata of Alpena; nine grandchildren; his brother, Peter Savina of Grand Rapids; his sister, Mary Kiss of Haslett; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Edmund.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord, with the Rev. Todd Brunworth officiating. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.
      Dorothea Weber
      Died November 5, 2002
      MEAUWATAKA - Dorothea Weber, 84, of Meauwataka, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac.
      She was born in Colfax Township in Wexford County on Aug. 8, 1918, to John and Louise (Freund) Schutte. Dorothea married Carl Weber in Cadillac on Nov. 28, 1945.
      Dorothea grew up in Colfax Township and was a lifelong resident. She worked for several years at Manton Industries and Lakeview Manor. She served as the janitor for the Colfax Town Hall for many years. Dorothea enjoyed living in the country and being a homemaker. She loved her family and grandchildren.
      Dorothea is survived by her three daughters, Anita (Joseph) Orin of Grand Rapids, Lois (Lawrence) Oprych of Traverse City and Joann Weber (Donald Shuss) of Cedar Springs; and her six grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl in 1983; a brother, Karl and two sisters, Esther Eichenberger and Alice Cook.
      A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton, with Richard Masten officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home Saturday. Burial will be in Meauwataka Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Colfax/Greenwood Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      Geryl Lucretia 'Betty' Jarvis
      Died November 2, 2002
      SAULT STE. MARIE - Geryl Lucretia "Betty" Jarvis, 84, of Sault Ste. Marie, passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Tendercare Nursing Home.
      She was born in Traverse City on Aug. 31, 1918, to William and Geryl (Kinney) Hilderbrandt. Betty was raised, lived and worked in Traverse City most of her life, moving to Sault Ste. Marie two years ago. For several years she worked for, and retired from Burwood Products in Traverse City. On May 9, 1936, in Howe, Ind., she married Raymond "Ray" Jarvis.
      Betty is survived by her son, William (Donna) Jarvis of Sault Ste. Marie, and her daughter, Sandra (James) Serbin of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jacqueline Piette of Grand Rapids.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Patsy Hilderbrandt; and her husband, Ray Jarvis on March 25, 1986.
      There will be a private memorial service in late spring of next year in Traverse City. Burial will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Arrangements are in the care of Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home, Sault Ste. Marie.
