November 8, 2002ObituariesRuth I. MartinsenDied November 6, 2002 ELK RAPIDS - Ruth I. Martinsen, 81, of Elk Rapids, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. She was born in Ellsworth on Sept. 29, 1921, to John and Ollie (Drost) Sitzema. Ruth married Clifford Martinsen. Ruth retired from Super Tool in Elk Rapids and also worked at Parts Manufacturing in Traverse City. She enjoyed fishing and yard work, and loved animals and birds. She will be sadly missed by her dog, BJ. Ruth is survived by her sister, Edna (David) Waterous of Bellaire; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford Martinsen; and her stepmother, Florence Sitzema. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, until the time of services at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Bruce Standfest officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Antrim County Animal Shelter. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. **FLAG** Francis A. McCarthy Died November 6, 2002 ALDEN - Francis A. McCarthy, 74, of Alden, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at home. He was born May 26, 1928, in Detroit, the son of Francis and Helen (Trudeau) McCarthy. Francis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. On Sept. 28, 1950, he married Mary L. Rourk, in Detroit. Francis had resided in Alden for the past 10 years, moving from Southgate where he had worked for the Marathon Oil Company in Detroit for 36 years. He was a member of Teamsters Local #283. Francis attended St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire and St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Ft. Myers, Fla. Francis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary McCarthy; seven children, Kathleen (Timothy) McCarthy of Birmingham, Daniel (Karen) McCarthy of Southfield, Mary (Keith) Moody of Bay City, Linda McCarthy of Pontiac, Patricia (Phil) Nickerson of Waterford, Joseph (Terri) of Traverse City, and Michael (Valarie) of Wyandotte; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Dolores) of Grosse Isle, and Gerald (LaVerne) of Taylor; his sister, Rose Marie McKinnon of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Patricia Franckowiak. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where a wake service will be held at 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire, with Father Robert Schramm serving as celebrant. Myers, FL 33905-1937. **FLAG** Joseph William Rhoades Died November 5, 2002 MUSKEGON - Joseph William Rhoades, 72, of Muskegon and Sun Lakes, Ariz., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 5, 2002, at his home. He was born April 17, 1930, in Jefferson, Iowa, to Martha and Clifford Rhoades. Joe worked in the family plumbing and heating business before serving in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Joe earned a mechanical engineering degree from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and began his professional career at Commonwealth Associates in Jackson. He later joined in a partnership with Strum and Associates. In 1973, he started Rhoades Engineering Corporation, his own consulting engineering firm, which today has offices in Muskegon and Traverse City. Joe was a licensed professional engineer in several states and was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. He retired in 1996, and had split his time between his homes in Muskegon and Sun Lakes, Ariz. He was an avid golfer who hit two holes-in-one on the same hole in one week during the spring of 2001 at the Palo Verde Country Club in Sun Lakes, where he was a member. He was a member of the White Lake Golf Club in Whitehall. Joe was also a member of the Men's Christian Bowling League of Muskegon. Joe is survived by his wife and companion of 20 years, Ginny (Buckner) King Rhoades; his children, Randall (Gretchen) Rhoades of Muskegon, Sandra Rhoades-Beach and Jeffrey Beach of Latham, N.Y., and Jon Rhoades of Muskegon; his stepchildren, Cindy (Roland) Nakahara of Woodinville, Wash., Ronald (Rene`) King of Tucson, Ariz., Robert (Tracy) King of Mesa, Ariz., and Kaylene (Timothy) Schultz of Lakewood, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; his brother, Robert (Rita) Rhoades of Jefferson, Iowa; and his sisters, Peggy (Gerald) Dunne of Churdan, Iowa, Barbara (Elza) Rose of Waterloo, Iowa, and Joyce Kinsman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held today, at 11 a.m. at the Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Home, in Muskegon, (231) 759-8565. LARRY DONALD HARTLEY SR., 50, of Brethren, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at the funeral home. Interment services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi. The Terwilliger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. CELESTE W. TROMBLEY, 94, of Bellaire, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. Funeral arrangements are pending at the McCabe Funeral Home in Farmington Hills. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Local arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Charles Joseph Pearson Died November 6, 2002 TRAVERSE CITY - Charles Joseph Pearson, infant son of Cassandra and Joe, died Nov. 6, 2002, at home. He was born in Traverse City on Oct. 29, 2002. He is also survived by his sisters, Hope and Hailey; brothers, Nick, Robert and Alex; maternal grandparents, Larry and Peggy Clink of Karlin; paternal grandparents, Harold and Alva Pearson of Buckley; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. In his brief life, Charles brought much happiness and joy to his extended family. He will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where friends may begin calling at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Downs Cemetery in Buckley. |
