Obituaries

EMPIRE - June E. Wright, 84, of Empire, and of Hickory Hills, Ill., died Sunday, Nov. 10, at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City.
      She was born June 8, 1918, in Chicago, and was the owner of Glenn Lake Manor and co-owner of LeBear Restaurant.
      June was active in the Eastern Star and served twice as a Past Matron of Maple Chapter #90, OES, Oak Lawn. She also had served as a Grand Representative, Grand Electa in 1986, and was Past Worthy High Priestess of Unity Shrine #92 of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. June also enjoyed traveling over the years.
      June is survived by her daughters, Nancy Wright of Empire, Dr. Suzzane (Rob) Rife of Orland Park, Ill., and her grandsons, Christopher and Daniel.
      June was preceded in death by her husband, Everett in 1977; and by her parents.
      Local visitation will take place today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Visitation in Illinois will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Zimmerman and Sandeman Funeral Home, Orland Park, Ill., where services from the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, (time to be announced) at Zimmerman and Sandeman Funeral Home. Entombment will take place in Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago on Thursday.

      MONROE - Helen M. Turner, 74, of Monroe, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2002, at Mercy Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past 10 years, and seriously ill since February of this year.
      She was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Monroe, to Frazer and Dollie (Campbell) Poore. On April 7, 1945, Helen married General E. Turner in Middlesboro, Ky.
      Helen was employed as a nurses aide for Beach Nursing Home for 15 years and also worked at Mercy Memorial Hospital, where she retired in June of 1988. She enjoyed being outdoors and camping and also loved to cook.
      Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years, General E. Turner; her son, Dallas E. (Lynn) Turner of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Bryce (Kristi) Turner, Marcy Turner and Lance Turner; and her sister, Charlotte (Boyd) Bailey of Tazewell, Tenn.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel in Monroe.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kathy R. Charlefour of the East Raisinville Frenchtown United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will be held.
      Memorial contributions may be made to East Raisinville Frenchtown United Methodist Church.
      Arrangements are being handled by Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel, Inc., in Monroe.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Frank Joseph Semer, 79, of Traverse City, died early Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Martin and Catherine (Rogalny) Semer. His parents, two infant sisters and five brothers preceded him in death. Frank was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as an aerial photographer. On Sept. 13, 1947, he married Wanda Lawrynowicz in Detroit.
      Frank had resided in Traverse City for the past seven years, moving from his longtime residence in Dearborn Heights. He retired from the Ford Motor Company in 1988, where he worked as a research analyst. He spent his winters in Bradenton, Fla.
      Frank's greatest joy was his family and grandchildren. An avid golfer, he also loved the outdoors, gardening and debating current events. He was an independent thinker with strong personal values. Frank quietly contributed to numerous noble causes.
      Frank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wanda Semer; five children, James Semer of Alachua, Fla., Gail Semer of New York and Michigan, Gary (Cathy) Semer of Plymouth, Kevin (Julie) Semer of Harrison Township and Eric Semer of Southfield; seven grandchildren, Erin, Emily, Jordan, Adelle (children of Gary and Mary Gadbaw Davis); and Kristen (Gary and Cathy) and Joel and Janelle (children of Kevin and Julie).
      A private family memorial was held Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002.

      WINSLOW, Ariz. - David Lee Riskey, formerly of Traverse City, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in Arizona. He was born Nov. 14, 1955. David was a former employee of Consumers Energy in Lansing.
      David is survived by his four children, Nicole, Erika, Kendall and David Jr.; his father, Frank Riskey; his mother and stepfather, Dale and Anna May Fee; four sisters, Susan, Debbie, Diane and Lisa; and four nieces, Jennifer, Georgia, Madison and Carolina.
      A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 517 W. Jolly Rd., Lansing.
      A local memorial service will be held in Traverse City at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Alano Club, 712 Duell Rd., Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the local Alano Club.
      FRANKFORT - Ila Mae Hanel, 77, of Frankfort, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.
      She was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Flint, the daughter of Oscar Paul and Autie Jean (Weston) Falk.
      Ila was a homemaker and formerly a bank teller with Metropolitan Federal Savings. She married in 1944, and moved to Utica with her husband, Henry F. Hanel in 1953. She and her husband vacationed in the Crystal Lake area before retiring to Beulah in 1980. They then moved to Frankfort in 1990 upon the completion of Michigan Shores. She was active in the decorating of the building, served on the board of directors and was a past president. Ila was a member of the Benzonia First Congregational Church, their women's club and was formerly a member of the Beulah Library Club.
      Ila is survived by her daughter, Karla J. (Kenneth) Prange of Washington, Mich., her sons, Gary L. (Carol) Hanel of Clinton Township and Brian W. (Cynthia) Hanel of Macomb Township; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
      Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Benzonia First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Stephen Davidson officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

      FRANKFORT - Barbara Jane Corcoran, 74, of Frankfort, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at her home, surrounded by her loving husband, daughters and a grandchild.
      She was born May 9, 1938, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Maynard Victor and Varner Lucille (Williams) Harrison.
      Barbara graduated from Cadillac High School in 1947. She married Dale D. Corcoran in Cadillac, on Aug. 8, 1947. Barbara was a homemaker who enjoyed exercising, shopping, sewing, crafts, traveling and playing cards with her group of friends. She was a member of the Frankfort Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Democratic Party. She was formerly a volunteer with the Frankfort Elementary School and the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. She will be remembered as a great mom and grandmother.
      Barbara is survived by her husband, Dale D. Corcoran of Frankfort; her daughters, Colleen K. Corcoran (Andrew Kroll) of Grand Rapids, Christine A. (Randall) Olsen of Frankfort, Denise K. (Frederick) Schubert of Morganton, N.C., Jennifer G. (Marty) Ferguson of Duluth, Minn., and Angela B. (Tim) Cavric of Interlochen; grandchildren, Ryan Johnson, Brienne Olsen, Dillon Olsen, Blake Johnson, Forrest Ferguson, Brady Olsen, Eanne Ferguson, Austin Ferguson, Chase Cavric and Holden Cavric; her mother, Varner Harrison of Phoenix, Ariz.; and her sister, Jean (Earl) Rasmussen of Ft. Wayne, Ind.
      She was preceded in death by her father, Maynard Victor Harrison.
      Cremation has taken place.
      A memorial service will be held, Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Frankfort United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Greg Culver officiating, and the Eulogy by the Rev. Tim Boal.

      EAST JORDAN - Virginia "Ginny" Burley, 78, of East Jordan, and formerly of Traverse City, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
      She was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Shelbyville, Ind., to Ralph and Minerva (Johnson) Wasson. Ginny married James J. Burley on June 20, 1959, in Traverse City.
      Ginny was the founder of the Flap-Jack Family Restaurants with a chain of 14 restaurants at one time. She was a mentor and helped many restaurant owners in the area get started. She was a member of the National Restaurant Association and the Michigan Restaurant Association. Ginny also was the third owner of Sleder's Restaurant before starting the Flap-Jack Restaurants. She was a well known business woman in the area.
      She enjoyed cooking and working in the restaurant and while raising her three sons, she attended night school to get her accounting degree.
      Ginny is survived by her husband of 43 years, James J. Burley of East Jordan; grandson, Marc Bender, whom she raised as a son, of East Jordan; two sons, Joe (Sherry) Bender of East Jordan and James (Mildred) Bender of Traverse City; numerous grandchildren; her brother, Ralph "Bud" (Eleanor) Wasson of Dewitt; special nephew, Rick Ericson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jerry Bender; and her three sisters, Rosamand Bliss, Mary Wilde and Betty Ericson.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home, with Father James Hayden officiating. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or to a charity of your choice.
