Obituaries

A memorial service for MILDRED L. HERKNER-BALLANCE, M.D., will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church.
      Dr. Herkner-Ballance, 87, of Lake Leelanau, died Oct. 24, 2002.
      The family is being served by the Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.
     
      JAMES A. DANNENBERG, 66, of Grayling, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Grayling Nursing Centre.
      Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
     
      JACK MAULE, 79, of Mancelona, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska. Burial will be in Coldsprings Township Cemetery.

      IRIS MARCELLE STOPPELS, 80, of Rapid City, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Garden Cemetery in Holland, Mich.
      A full obituary will appear in the Thursday edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

      GLADYS L. TUFTS, 85, of Grayling, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Mercy Manor in Grayling.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Sorenson Funeral Home in Grayling.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling.
     
      MYRON C. 'BUTCH' TUNNACLIFF, 60, of Kalkaska, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at his home.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Kalkaska. Burial will follow in Excelsior Township Cemetery.

      Died November 11, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Glenn Lockard Holm, 85, of Thompsonville, and formerly of Flint, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      She was born July 6, 1917, in Berwick, Pa., as a twin daughter of Richard Angel and Annie Glenn Lockard. Mary became a registered nurse in 1939 after graduating from the Geisinger Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in England during World War II, and was recalled to duty during the Korean conflict, where she was stationed in Japan. She received an honorable discharge in 1953, after having achieved the rank of captain.
      In 1950, she received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Columbia University, New York, and in 1957, Mary received her master's degree from the University of Michigan. She made her home in Flint for many years following her marriage to Roy Willard Holm in 1959.
      She worked predominantly in public health nursing in New York and Flint and then went on to teach nursing, becoming the director of the practical nursing program at C.S. Mott Community College in Flint. Mary retired from this position in 1978.
      After her retirement from nursing, she moved to Northern Michigan where she embarked on volunteer services with Michigan Home Health Care, Inc. and The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City. Mary loved and cared for her fellow man. She was serious and accomplished in her profession.
      She will be greatly missed by her extended family, countless friends, former colleagues and the Presbyterian Community of Traverse City.
      Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Angel and Annie Glen Lockard; her beloved twin sister Jane (Lapet Lockard); and her husband, Roy Willard Holm.
      Memorial services will be held at The Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. The Rev. Becky Chamberlain will be officiating. Immediately following the services, Mary's cremated remains will be buried in The Presbyterian Church's Prayer Garden with Military Honors under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post 2780.
      Mary's family and friends wish to extend their appreciation to the clinical staff at Bortz Health Care, and also a special thanks is expressed to the clinical staff and the physical therapy department of the Cherry Unit at Grand Traverse Pavilions for their outstanding care.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Pavilions or The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Vernal E. Kelley
      Died November 11, 2002
      KINGSLEY - Vernal E. "Vern" Kelley, 88, of Kingsley, and formerly of Elsie and Southfield, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002.
      He was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Kalkaska County, to Joseph C. and Nora (Spooner) Kelley. On Oct. 23, 1937, Vern married Dealia Perhall, in Kingsley.
      Vern was a truck driver for Rogers Cartage of Royal Oak, retiring in 1971. It was following his retirement that he moved from the Southfield area and returned to Kingsley. He enjoyed the scenic area in which he lived and was an avid golfer.
      Vern is survived by six children, Evelyn Sehl of Kingsley, Basil Kelley of Bannister, Verna Kelley of Elsie, Fredric (Sandra S.) Kelley of Elsie, Victoria Kelley of Kingsley and Hope Kelley of Kingsley; 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three brothers and four sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Dealia in 1991; a son, Roy Thomas Kelley; four brothers and one sister.
      Visitations will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Arthur Covell officiating. Interment will be in Barnum Cemetery in Mayfield.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Virginia I. Reyst
      Died November 11, 2002
      CENTRAL LAKE - Virginia I. Reyst, 83, of Central Lake, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
      She was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Detroit, the daughter of Arthur and Ruby (Doan) Mills. On June 8, 1940, in Ferndale, Virginia married Cornelius "Neil" Reyst.
      Virginia worked as an administrative secretary at Sampson Elementary School in the Detroit Public School System. After moving to Central Lake, she worked in the same capacity for the Central Lake Public Schools until here retirement in 1982. Virginia was a member of the Central Lake First Congregational Church.
      She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Neil Reyst; two children, Joyous Ann (Joseph) Niman of Sterling Heights and Gregory Alan (Cindy) Reyst of Kingsford; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Miriam (Robert) Martin of West Bloomfield and Helen Mills of Bellaire; and several nieces and nephews.
      Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and two sons, Ronald Douglas and Thomas Michael.
      Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Central Lake First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Daniel Clark officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake First Congregational Church, or to any of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

      **FLAG** Stanley J. Zych
      Died November 11, 2002
      HONOR - Stanley J. Zych, 84, of Honor, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
      Stan was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Grand Rapids, to Andrew and Mary (Stalec) Zych. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On July 27, 1946, Stan married Sophia Mary Lach.
      He was the owner and operator of a restaurant and bar in Honor. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing.
      Stan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sophia; his sons, Harold Ed Lamoreaux of Branch and Rick (Julie) Zych of Honor; and two grandchildren, Michael (Meagan) Zych and Anna Zych, both of Honor.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and many siblings.
      Friends may call at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah today from 6 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at the funeral home, with Father Al Gietzen officiating. Interment will be in Champion Hill Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
      Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, Beulah.

      Died November 10, 2002
      TRAVERSE CITY - Sarah "Sally" Consaul Bruder, 83, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Cherry Hill Haven.
      She and her husband, Wallace J., retired to Traverse City in 1984. She was an active member of the Friendly Garden Club, First Congregational Church and Munson Medical Center Auxiliary.
      Sally was born May 1, 1919, in Mt. Pleasant, to Dr. Fred F. and Stella (Southwick) Consaul. In 1941, after graduating from Central Michigan University, she taught 3rd grade in Chelsea. On May 4, 1943, she married Ensign Bruder at the Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Md.
      The Bruders made their home in Midland as well as Paris, France, from 1959 to 1961; the Netherlands from 1965 to 1967; and Yugoslavia from 1974 to 1975.
      In Midland, Sally was a member of Little Garden Club, Trinity Lutheran Church, AAUW, and worked as a student counselor at Saginaw Valley College.
      Sally is survived by Wallace J. Bruder of Traverse City; son, W. John (Carolyn) Bruder, M.D., of Traverse City; daughter, Barbara B. (David) York of Woodside, Calif.; grandchildren, Matthew, Anne, Molly and Adrienne Bruder; John W., Margaret and Catherine York; and great-granddaughter, Felicity.
      Inurnment will be in the First Congregational Church's Garden of Remembrance.
      A memorial service is planned for Dec. 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue will be officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association of Michigan or Munson Hospice.
