November 14, 2002ObituariesCADILLAC - Richard Jeffrey Runstrom, 45, of Cadillac, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home.Mr. Runstrom was born June 15, 1957, in Detroit, to Richard Johnson and Marie Barbara (Hutchings) Runstrom. He graduated from Douglas McArthur High School in Saginaw. On Nov. 17, 1979, he married the former Dawn M. Kraatz in Saginaw. Mr. Runstrom had been employed with Delphi Chassis in Saginaw, and had lived in Cadillac since 1997. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac. Mr. Runstrom enjoyed water skiing, boating, buying trucks, deck-time, snow skiing, watching football, especially the Denver Broncos, and he loved to be around family. Survivors include: his wife, Dawn and his son, R. Jeremy Runstrom, and his daughter, Melissa Ann Runstrom and her fiancé, Ryan Benzenberg, and his father, Richard J. Runstrom, all of Cadillac; his brothers, Thomas (Diane) Runstrom, James (Julie) Runstrom, both of Traverse City, and Eric (Jill) Runstrom of Cadillac; sisters, Linda (Robert) Wilcox of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Virginia (Paul) Campbell of Saginaw; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie B. Runstrom. Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday, Nov. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac, with the Rev. Thomas W. Reinertson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, in Cadillac. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercy Amicare Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or to the Zion Lutheran Church. LUDINGTON - Margaret "Peg" Woodward, 87, formerly of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington. She had previously made her home with Kristy Nine at Lincolnwood Adult Foster Care in Ludington. Peg was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Toronto, Canada, to Orville and Daisy (Burns) Holm. She met her husband, Thomas G. Woodward in Port Huron, and they were married there on June 28, 1941. The couple moved to Traverse City in 1946, and Peg made it her home until 1995, when she moved to Ludington. She was a homemaker and worked as a teacher's aide with special education classes at the Traverse Bay Intermediate School District until her retirement. Peg is survived by her children, Tom Woodward of Missoula, Mont., and Sally Woodward of Ludington; three grandchildren, Mike and Becky Anderson of Lake Ann, and Eric Anderson of Orlando, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Rachael Anderson; her sister, Bettie Williams of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas in 1972. Cremation has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. There will be a memorial service held in Traverse City at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed in Peg's name to the American Cancer Society, or to Oakview Medical Care Facility's general fund. IRON MOUNTAIN - Meri Kay (Dean) DuFord, 55, of Iron Mountain went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, while her family was by her side. She was born April 29, 1947, in Traverse City, the daughter of Helen (Curry) and the late Garth Dean. She moved to Iron Mountain with her family in 1963, graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1965 and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in social work from Northern Michigan University. Meri Kay married Larry DuFord on Oct. 10, 1970, at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. Meri Kay worked for Family Chiropractic in Kingsford for many years. She attended Maranatha Assembly of God and participated in the Covenant Bible Study. She was an avid tennis player, a member of the Adult Tennis League and enjoyed running, boating and golfing. Meri Kay is survived by her husband, Larry; a daughter, Kit DuFord (Jeff DeMuri) of Kingsford; her mother, Helen Dean of Iron Mountain; two brothers, Randy (Pamela) Dean of Grand Junction, Colo., and Rex Dean of Kingsford; two sisters, Sandra Dean of Iron Mountain and Sue (Mark) Deacon of Clarkston; and seven nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at the Maranatha Assembly of God. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Maranatha Assembly of God, with the Rev. David Wilton officiating. Burial will be in Cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be Jeff DeMuri, Mark Deacon, Lorne Deacon, Keith Dean, Tom Carlson and Jack Reidy. RAPID CITY - Iris Marcelle Stoppels, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center in Kalkaska. She was born on Nov. 2, 1922, in Holland, the daughter of Gerrit and Laura (Lemmen) Muyskens. Iris graduated from Central Michigan University in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in education. After graduation she taught one year in the Muskegon School District. She married Charles J. Stoppels on March 31, 1945, in Holland. Iris was a member of the CMU College Sorority, headed her church college fellowship, was active with the USO during World War II, Church Circles and Guild, Girl Scouting and was also a church school teacher. She loved playing the piano and always played for the church school. Iris and Charles moved from Flint to Rapid City after they retired. She was a faithful and loving daughter, minister's wife and mother. Iris is survived by her loving family, including her husband of 57 years, the Rev. Charles J. Stoppels, Emeritus, of Rapid City; son, Charles Mark (Martha) Stoppels of Grand Rapids; and daughters, Laura Chamberlain of Pioneer, Calif., Jeanne (John Carroll) Stoppels of Rose City and Alice (Carl) Ray of Williamsburg; and six grandchildren. There will be a memorial service celebrating her life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with the Rev. Sandra K. Murray officiating. Internment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Holland. She was born Dec. 1, 1940, in Detroit, the daughter of Wellington and Maxine (Rise) Johnson. Wanda was united in marriage to Bill Bailey on Nov. 10, 1962, in Las Vegas. Wanda is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Michael and Tony of Farwell and Karen and Jeffrey of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren; her parents, Maxine Rae of Midland and Wellington Johnson of Houghton Lake; her sister, Shirley Taylor of Atalissa, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Services were held on Oct. 23, 2002, at the Kingdom Hall in Clare, with Justin Ridenour officiating. The Coker Funeral Home of Farwell handled cremation. FIFE LAKE - Phyllis M. Thorpe, our loving mother and grandmother, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Lansing. Mrs. Thorpe was born in Detroit. She retired from Ionia County Hospital after many years of service as a nurse anesthetist. For over 20 years, she was a member of the Walton Junctions Sportsman's Club in Fife Lake where she had served as a past secretary and treasurer. Phyllis is survived by her son, Robert E. Nelson of Lansing; two granddaughters, Andrea (Nate) Reniewicz and Beth Nelson; and her dear friend, Jean Strachan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce "Bud" Thorpe in March 2002. TEMECULA, Calif. - Rod Dunfield, 73, of Temecula, Calif., and formerly of Suttons Bay passed away Oct. 26, 2002. A native of Wichita, Kan., Rod graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in architecture, and from Wichita State University with a bachelor's degree in geology. Rod was an architectural engineer. He was a lieutenant and pilot with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Flying and building aircraft were life long loves of his. He was president of the Temecula Valley Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 1279. Rod is survived by his wife, Marianne; three daughters De Ann (James) Shimp of Wichita, Kan., Susan (Edward) MacLeod of Rosenberg, Texas, and Karen (Greg) Piaskowski of Cedar; and two sons, Jay (Julia) Dunfield of Kansas City, Kan., and Kevin McAdams of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Dobrinski of Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial has taken place at Mission San Antonio de Pala. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society. MANCELONA - Jack Maule, 79, of Mancelona, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his home. He was born on Nov. 18, 1922, in Flint, the son on Charles and Irene (Thompson) Maule. Jack was a veteran and served our country in the U.S. Army Infantry stationed in the South Pacific for seven years. He married Helen H. Grabowski on April 17, 1948, in Reno, Nev. Jack retired from AC Spark Plug in 1970 after 18 years of service. Jack is survived by his family, including his wife of 54 years, Helen Maule of Mancelona; children, Kathleen Ann (Steven) Holen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Thomas Andrew Maule of Mancelona; his sisters Florence (Carl) McMahan of East Jordan and Mildred M. (Kenneth) Englemann of Sterling Heights; his brothers, William F. Maule of Missouri and Sumner (Phyllis) Maule of Gladwin; and his seven grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Joshua, Jennifer, Jonathan, Thomas and Brandon. Jack was preceded in death by his son John Allen Maule in September 1983. There will be a funeral service honoring Jack at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Kalkaska at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Ted Turanski will be officiating. Interment will be at Coldsprings Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made in behalf of Jack Maule to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to North Country Hospice. Arrangements made by Wolfe Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Fidelis Mary "Faye" Martin, 96, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born May 21, 1906, in Saginaw, she was the daughter of Michael and Abby (Barney) Murray. Faye had been a beauty operator and a barber for 25 years, having shops in both Dearborn and Traverse City. She enjoyed needlework. Survivors include her daughter, Joan McGarry of Traverse City; brother, John Murray of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Marcia (William) Burgess of St. Joseph, Mark (Sharon) McGarry of Traverse City; and great-grandchildren, Patrick, Briana, Brian and Megan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Johnson, husband, Louis Martin; brother, Luke Murray; and son-in-law, Leon McGarry. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one's choice. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. MICHAEL E. MICHALAK, 50, of Kalkaska died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m., with a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. DOROTHY PELKEY, 69, of Traverse City died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at her home, surrounded by her family. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. SOLON H. 'TY' TYRRELL, 99, passed away at his home in Williamsburg on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002. A memorial service will be held June 20, 2003, which would have been Ty's 100th birthday, in Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Mich. Arrangements by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. STANLEY J. ZYCH, 84, of Honor died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
